Vehicle Detail
Excellent original condition for an unrestored P50. This P50 has been in San Diego since new and has no rust or dents and very few scratches, and its chrome has no pitting. It has the typical small stress crack on the plastic fender as you see on the pic. This has been in my Honda collection for 18 years stored correctly with no fuel in the tank or battery installed, but with fresh engine oil. The tires are still soft and holding air. It still shines decently, both paint and chrome. The bike has a few scratches as you can see, look at the photos for details. I will post more if requested. It has had a California moped license on it, and does not have or require a title. Email me with any questions you might have. It ran well when I last drove it about 10 years ago and all lights and brakes functioned well. The gas cap is a Honda replacement. I have the original, but it is a dull finish. I also replaced the headlight switch with a new one. The front tire is a period correct Nitto, and the rear tire is a period correct Bridgestone. I am assuming the the rear tire is a replacement. The P50 rear tires wore more quickly because of the engine location. I was the head judge of the Japanese class at the old Del Mar motorcycle concours and work on bikes with Bill Silver, Mr Honda. The Honda P50 was brought into the USA for only one year, 1968. It earns a place in history as being the last motor-wheel moped design by Honda (and probably by any other large manufacturer). It features a step-through frame made from steel pressings, leading-link front suspension, plastic fenders and chainguard. The fuel tank is located above the rear fender, and the key distinguishing feature of the design is the 50cc over head cam engine being located at the extreme lower left rear of the frame, with all of the driveline components housed within the large hub of the rear wheel. The engine is also 4-stroke - unusual when almost all pedal-equipped mopeds used simpler 2-strokes. Soichiro Honda disliked the sharp noise of 2-strokes, and the 4-stroke does not require oil to be mixed with the gasoline at every fill-up. Remember, this is a mostely unrestored bike and is 43 years old. However, one of the better unrestored examples in the USA. I accept only Paypal as payment and must be paid in full within 4 days. No trades or once in a lifetime deals please. Pick up is preferred, but I can arrange for dropping it off at a shipper in the San Diego area. On Jun-10-11 at 10:24:52 PDT, seller added the following information: Added note: I serviced the engine the other day and after adjusting the valves, I did a compression test and it was down on compression enough to affect peak performance. Most Honda owners do not keep their valves adjusted and the valves tighten up even with average useage. This is hard on the exhaust valve especially. I took the engine out and I am now going to put new intake and exhaust valves in it and lap them. I also inspected the bore which looked perfect, but since I have it apart, I am putting a new ring set in it, standard bore. I will replace the head gasket and cam cover gasket. I am also replacing the main crank seal since it is in there since 1968.
