Vehicle Detail

1973 Volvo 1800ES Sport Wagon 26,275 Miles from Brand-New - In a Prestigious Volvo Collection for a Quarter-Century! Fitted with Factory Air Conditioning, Nicely Accessorized, Just Serviced! Please wait for all pictures to load! Finished in Cypress Green over a brown interior, this 1973 Volvo 1800ES Sport Wagon has had but three owners from brand-new. In the early 1980s, a noted Volvo Sports of America member, the late John Adamchak, discovered this car in a New Jersey garage. It had been stored there since the 1970s when the original owner experienced a literal 'melt-down' of the Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection system and apparently couldn't see it through to get it fixed. I just saw one of these this weekend parked next to a brand-new C30 wagon, boy, talk about Brand DNA in that one. It just goes to show you how timeless this look really is and why so many people are still crazy about the 1800s. Remember that US 'safety' standards killed this great car after just over 8,000 were produced, so it's a pretty rare bird today, particularly with the low miles and great condition. Adamchak freshened the paint, the fuel injection and some details and used the car sparingly over the next 25 years, almost exclusively to go to VCOA and VSA events. I remember seeing it at Carlisle some years ago in a lineup of amazing 1800s. On Adamchak's death last year, his widow liquidated all of his classic Volvos, including this one. A friend of mine purchased the car, made sure it was safe and reliable to drive and put a few miles on it before getting very busy with other things in his life. As I had a client with an interest in the car, I made a deal with him and brought it back here. Turns out he did something different in the interim, so I'm in a bit of an uncomfortable position... which could be very beneficial to you, as this car was not to be offered for public sale but was to go right into another large private collection of exceptional low-miles cars. I want to point out the excellent stainless-steel exhaust system, makes a great sound and will not require replacement - likely ever. It looks like one from Timevalve, the same manufacturer I had on my Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3. While the paint has aged, the body is completely solid; having gone but little more than 26,000 miles since 1973, it hasn't had the opportunity to rust! At one time long ago, the underside of the car was undercoated, likely preventing any future issues. The Volvo Turbo alloys give a unique look to this car. If you prefer, the original steel wheels also convey with your purchase and you can go right back to the original look. Four near-perfect trim-rings and caps also convey. I have boxed the wheels for easy transport. The Bosch fog lamps are also original Volvo accessory items, not merely aftermarket and are correct to the car. Inside the left door. Carpets, dash, seats and console are all immaculate. On receipt of the car, we found a stuck thermostat, so we fitted a new 180-degree one with a new o-ring. The factory air conditioning is absolutely complete and works, though the charge is low. I have not pulled a vacuum on it but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't take a quick ES-12a charge and work fantastically. You'll also notice both sets of original keys, an original touch-up pen and best of all, the original Blaupunkt for Volvo AM/FM Stereo radio in the dash. Nothing has been molested here. The engine has fantastic oil pressure at hot idle as shown here. The fuel gauge and clock work perfectly. The ventilation and heater controls beneath the center dash. The ashtray and lighter have never been used for that purpose. The right side door is as nice as the left. Note the passenger seat adjustable lumbar support. Another close-up shot of the air conditioning. The back seat is for children or amputees only - think Porsche 911.... This is what Pelle Petersen and Bob Sinclair had in mind when the 1800S became the 1800ES Sportwagon... tremendous cargo space inside a very attractive shell in a fun-to-drive car! Note the super-rare and original leather cargo area straps! As mentioned earlier, three more rims like this come with the car, complete with beautiful trim rings and caps, should you desire to go back to steels. Since this photo was taken, I fitted four freshly-rebuilt Bosch fuel injectors with new crimped on hoses, upper and lower seals. The car runs a lot better now and the hazard of another engine fire is much lower! And from the other side. Stunningly original and good-running, too! Finally, the owner's manual packet and the VSA magazine the car was featured in in 1994 - as seen here many years later! who am I? I'm Chip Lamb, contributor to Keith Martin's Sports Car Market and Corvette Market magazines - we cover the collector car auction market throughout the world. I also participate in and work for some of these companies during their auctions, run a small niche-market parts business... it's a living, or three! When I have free time, I like to dabble in interesting collector cars such as this exquisite low-miles car here. As I explained earlier, I had a client lined up for it who then, in essence, changed his mind. Shortly, we've got a couple of cars coming down to my small shop from a big collection for major service soon, so before they do, this needs to move along. My loss may be your gain... but make sure you take advantage of this opportunity on eBay now, as if this does not sell here, it will be consigned to a very popular live collector car auction towards the end of June where it will sell... period.... payment/shipping terms Payment must be received within seven days of auction close unless cleared with me in advance of your bid. Accepted forms of payment include wire transfer, cashier's cheque or cash on pickup. Perhaps you have a partial swap in mind... these must all be cleared with me well prior to any bid but can be up or down and include unusual British or European sports cars, microcars or vintage British or European motorcycles. I know my values and will not cheat you on a spot appraisal, but I have very little interest in projects or machines in lesser condition than that which you see above. I buy good stuff, but I avoid crap. That ought to tell you something about what you're bidding on today. Shipping or pickup must take place within fourteen days of auction close, again, unless cleared with me in advance of your bid. You may drive it home provided that you can register it in your home state prior to coming to pick it up after payment is received in full and I send you the title, or you may pick up following receipt of payment in my bank account (unless you plan on paying with cash). By the way, I make no guarantees that it will make it home to California or whereever you live as this is a 38-year-old un-restored car. I advise trailering it home as not only will you avoid the adventure of unforseen breakdown, you'll also have the peace of mind knowing that nobody will run into such a rare and unique car. This will be absolutely necessary for Canadian bidders should you not be using commercial carriers, I cannot provide you with a temporary tag as I am not a dealer. If you are in Western Europe or somewhere else outside the USA, I can get the car down to the Port of Norfolk or Baltimore for a small fee via enclosed transport and with the greatest care. QUESTIONS? COMMENTS? CONCERNS? E-MAIL ME OR CALL 804-357-4926On May-30-11 at 15:07:24 PDT, seller added the following information: We have been contacted by a representative of a demolition derby television show who have interest in the car as a feature on their upcoming program. While the prospect of this car meeting a sticky end for the entertainment of a reality TV audience sickens me, I can only ask that those who appreciate this car for what it is step in and bid to save it from this fate by bidding with both your heart and your head. Why the Speed Channel would get behind such a concept and alienate many collector automobile enthusiasts is beyond me. And now, with 330 watchers and 28 hours to go, I wish you all good luck...On May-31-11 at 04:54:57 PDT, seller added the following information: It appears that the classic car demolition derby thing was a ruse by a shady member of eBay who has now been blocked. I will qualify this by stating that the only reference to this I managed to find in a half-hour of perusing Google were other inquiries this person made of eBay members back in March on a small assortment of other cars. The bidder's own page stated that she had just gone back to college and had no money, so I can only surmise that the Nigerians managed to gain access to her account. With any luck, this listing will not fall victim to a scam attempt. Thanks for your continued interest in this last day.... all the best, Chip
