Once-in-a-lifetime 1972 Opel GT This is, without a doubt, one of the finest unrestored Opel GTs in the world. Despite being nearly 40 years old, this car still has original paint! It has never been hit, though it does have tiny dings and rock chips (which prove the authenticity!) It also has a few very carefully chosen and implemented improvements, of which almost all of them could be reversed back for pure original stock, if that is what you really desire. When I bought this car, I made a solemn promise to the previous owner (George from Seattle) that I would be the “caretaker”, not just the “owner”. Fifteen years later, it is time to pass the torch, and I feel the same way George did – PLEASE don’t buy this car for a daily driver, it’s virtually a museum piece! Appraised for $13,975 with a replacement value of over $19,000. I’ll take a chance and start at $9,000… A few basic facts about the 1972 Opel GT in general: · Generally agreed by the Opel Community to be the most desirable year for this model · Very reliable and fun to drive · “Pop-out” rear side windows provide great ventilation Some overall comments about this particular GT: · ORIGINAL PAINT - Fireglow Orange · No body rust whatsoever – PERIOD! · Multiple show winner · Clear title, freshly registered and just inspected (April 2011) · Garaged and pampered since 1980 · 78,200 miles, with less than 2000 miles since 1996 Exterior: · Headlights roll perfectly and are adjusted to fit precisely in both up and down positions · ORIGINAL (In NOS condition) “Opel Blitz” hood emblem in perfect condition · ORIGINAL (In NOS condition) lenses all are NOS Hella – not reproductions · ORIGINAL (in NOS condition) Gas cap; same key for ignition and locking gas cap · ORIGINAL Very rare luggage rack (dealer add-on) installed and in good condition · ORIGINAL rear window defroster (dealer add-on) installed and still working · Chrome is perfect on Door handles AND the catch/latch mechanisms · Bumpers have been re-chromed and are perfect · NEW Hood rubber (bumpers and gaskets), front/rear windshield gaskets and chrome strips, vinyl door molding & bumpers · Modern electric radio antenna automatically extends/retracts when radio turned on/off · Power mirrors (RX-7) added for better visibility · 1970’s American Racing wheels with Opel hubcap centers added for custom touch · I have the original wheels/tires and they are included if you want them · Hide-away charger wiring for convenient external connection to battery-tender (charger included with car) · 1970’s chrome mud flaps Interior: · Original Dashboard is perfect: Crack-free, Like new · Original Visors are perfect and in like new condition · Original Headliner is perfect like new condition · All switches and gauges are perfect, with crisp white lettering · Analog/mechanical clock runs · Original heater control is solid and works smoothly · Heater control valve switch in engine compartment replaced and like new · Shifter boot replaced with high-quality reproduction · Intermittent windshield wipers (control on same panel with the electric mirror controls) · Door panels, inner handles, window handles and armrests are perfect · Added mid-90’s cassette player which really fits – did NOT cut or modify the plastic instrument panel to accommodate it. · 6”x9” AND 5” round speakers installed for great sound quality · Floormats replaced with top-quality Opel GT Source ones · Added discreet but helpful under-dash footwell courtesy lights · Original jack, spare and spare hold down bracket Mechanical: · Battery (four years old) is in stainless steel custom-welded tray, with shut-off terminal installed · New Brake booster · Brakes have new pads and hardware and work perfectly · Polished aluminum valve cover, cap and water inlet · Petcock professionally installed in radiator for no-mess draining · Modified carburetor intake to retain stock air filter setup · Muffler recently replaced · Original charcoal canister – with charcoal! – in place and functional · All gas tank plastic vent lines replaced about 3 years ago · Replaced Solex with Weber 32/36 DGEV carb (electric choke) · Relay installed to protect ignition switch from burnout · Wiring to the headlights replaced with high-grade marine wires · Distributor points replaced with Pertronix electronic ignition Flaws: · There is a small tear in the driver’s seat near the latch mechanism · Minor dents in lower belly pan - not the slightest bit visible at ground level · Tires are over 10 years old (Although they have good tread and show no signs of dry rot) Bonus - included with car: · $250 car cover (felt inside, canvas outside) custom tailored specifically for the Opel GT Logistics: Bids from users with feedback lower than 10 are not welcome. Winning bidder is responsible for all aspects and costs of transportation, though I will certainly try to help and will drive it anywhere within a 50-mile radius (i.e. roughly a triangle between Boston, MA, Worcester, MA and Providence, RI). Despite the absolutely impeccable condition of this car, I must add this it is sold “as-is” and offered without any warranty.
