Vehicle Detail

Ok, so after a fairly disorganized attempt to list this car last week I have hopefully got all the info together before starting this time! This is a very unique 1970 Porsche 911 sunroof coupe that has gone through a number of upgrades. The first and most significant is the replacement of the original 2.2l with a 3.0l engine coupled with a close ratio transmission, so this is a fast car. The transmission is the standard 901 that is correct for this year of car, and should you want to return this car to it's original specifications the transmission is good to go. You might wonder why that is relevant but this car also comes with the original numbers matching engine. The engine has been dismantled, no doubt for a rebuild at a prior point in it's history and never completed. The previous owner was unable to vouch for the completeness of the engine and I have done nothing with it either so unfortunately I am unable to do much more than confirm that the numbers do in fact match. Personally I bought the car for the enhanced performance and have never considered putting the original engine back in. Speaking of performance a compression and leak down test was performed last week, the results in order were 150, 148, 148, 145, 150 & 155. The leak down results were 8%, 5%, 10%, 8%, 7% & 5%, so very respectable all round. In addition to the engine the car received other upgrades including the oil cooler in the front right fender, turbo tie rods and SC brakes. The prior owner told me there was more done but I don't have the details. The car has been lowered and suspension firmed up through Bilsteins. I understand that the car was intended for track use and certainly is well set up for that. This is further supported by the fact that the interior heating system is not connected; being driven off the engine itself this is a common mod to increase power for track use. In the 15 months that I have owned the car a fair amount of maintenance and renovation has been done including a transmission rebuild, so 2nd gear sounds like it should! The exterior also has quite a unique look with the lowered stance and the addition of RS rear fenders with 16" original Fuchs (6" fronts and 7" rears) in excellent condition with nearly new tires. I had the wheels polished when I got the car to give that early look. The car was repainted in 2009 and looks absolutely fantastic and the body is immaculate also, every panel is straight and fits, every panel edge is clean, even under the car. You will not find a cleaner, straighter body out there. The interior is very clean with Recaro seats. The sunroof is fully functional and does not leak. Another point worth mentioning is that car has lived in Southern California for it's entire life and is rust free. I realize that means different things to different people but as you can see from the floor pan and underside photos - this car is dry. All trim, lights and chrome are also in excellent condition. One of the great things about this car are the extensive records and history that come with it, including all of the original sale documents, service book, manuals and many maintenance records, as well as the tools. The first owner lived in Laguna Beach and appears to have kept the car for over 20 years and was diligent with his performance and tracking of the maintenance. The records are not complete for the entire history of the car but this is all of somewhat limited relevance considering the engine has been replaced but it does point to a car that has been respected and well treated for much of it's life. Now for the reality check. While no one believes it when they see the car, this is a first class driver, not a show car. The repaint did not include the jambs but the previous paint is still in excellent shape and it is not obvious where the new and old paint meet. There are of course some minor blemishes including a small dimple the size of a dime near the windshield on the driver side and a couple of small cracks in the original paint. There is a very small oil leak from the crank pulley seal, so nothing major. At some point this car had AC and there are holes in the engine compartment for the pipes/hoses. The interior is very clean but could do with some tlc to match the exterior and if I were to keep the car I would probably replace the seats at some point. The clock does not work (well twice a day it does!) and there is no stereo. All other electrics work including the electric windows. All in all this is a fantastic car, that at some point someone spent a lot of money restoring, and is perfect for someone seeking the look and feel of an early 911 but with a much more aggressive look and the performance to match. I am more of a Porsche admirer than an expert but am happy to answer any questions whether technical or otherwise. Rob
