Vehicle Detail

My business partner (Master Porsche Tech and 35 year shop owner) and I spent many late evening hours and weekends with this project. I’m a little sad to see it go, but like he said, he only has room for just so many cars. This car came to the shop approximately three years ago on a roll-back, with a 1989 inspection sticker (had not been on the road since then). The owner quickly lost interest in the car after the estimate to get it back on the road. My business partner thought it would be a good candidate for a hi-po 3.0L he was building at the time, so he bought the car. One thing led to another and the next thing you know a major project was underway. Originally this car was brown with a tan interior. The body was extremely straight and rust free, with the exception of the front pan that had two rust areas near the suspension mounting points. The car was stripped down, a new front pan welded in and underwent a professional color change. This color is the Dove Gray used on 356s and early 911s and is very similar to the current Sport Classic Gray. All exterior seals have been replaced (sunroof felt, front hood, doors, etc.) along with the addition of a ’84-’89 Carrera front valance, fog lights and chin spoiler. The twin bulb high intensity headlights feature a 100 watt high beam. A new tinted windshield was installed along with refurbished tilt out rear quarter windows. Kuhmo 205/60 R15 tires all around with Fuch 5 ½” wheels on the front and 7” on the rear (the right rear is a reproduction, the other three are Fuch). The fresh, balanced high performance 3.0L engine started with a ‘79 crank and case (#6392870). New head studs were installed and the engine was built to European 3.0L specs including Mahle 11.0:1 pistons, euro fuel distributor and warm-up regulator along with an early 3.0L air box which has the larger intake runners. Air box does have the pop-off valve in place. Bead blasted cylinder heads received 930 valve guides and the valve seats were cut on three angles. New timing chains, slides and a Carrera tensioner kit were installed. Bosch CD box and Bosch pointless distributor along with new plug wires. New SSI heat exchangers and muffler. Engine cooling is improved with a Terbatrol front oil cooler supplied by new Aeroquip lines. A ‘79 SC/915 transmission was completely rebuilt with new syncros, slide gears, seals, gaskets and a new electronic speedometer pickup. Axles rebuilt, new clutch, pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bushing along with a new clutch cable and 1979 shifter with new bushings. Even though this was a factory A/C car, all lines were removed and replaced with new R134A lines. A new front evaporator, dryer and Sanden rotary compressor was installed to provided the best cooling possible. The interior knee vent system was removed to provide more knee room and as a side benefit, improved interior air flow. The controls were relocated on the ledge of the dash below the speedometer. The under dash vent system is available and will be included in the sale if desired. The brake system was enhanced with new tie rod ends, wheel bearings, seals, cross drilled rotors, pads, flex brake lines and master cylinder. Aluminum “S” calipers were added to the front and the original rears were rebuilt. The suspension received Bilstein shocks, SC torsion bars, SC sway bars and adjustable rear spring plates. The interior features a new dash, new headliner, four-way power 993 seats, new grey carpet kit, new seat belts, refurbished ’79 leather steering wheel (with factory 1.5 inch extension added), and refurbished misc. interior parts from the original tan interior (dyed black). The speedometer was upgraded with a ‘79 electronic version with the mileage set to match the original ‘74’s odometer of 59,819. It is now showing 62,826; this car has only been driven 3,007 miles since the complete rebuild (finished in March 2010). A Pioneer AM/FM/CD (model DEH200MP) head unit and Pioneer speakers were installed. There are dozens of other items to list such as new fuel pump, cleaned and coated fuel tank, etc., but from the pics and description above it is obvious this car has been completely rebuilt from the ground up.
