Vehicle Detail

This is a 2000 R 1200 CA, which is equipped like no other. If you were looking for an immaculate BMW Cruiser, you found it. Perhaps you were feeling bad because you bid on one you lost, but it was meant to be because that made it possible for you to find this better one, so cheer up! Sit back, read my rather lengthy description, look at the pictures and see if this is indeed your dream bike. First, why I’m selling it… This is my pride and joy. I ordered this bike from BMW and I am the original owner. I’ve spent many a night out in the garage polishing it, and certainly not enough time riding it. If you know about these bikes, 15,549 miles is nothing. These only break-in at 12,000 miles. My Chromehead buddies are going to be shocked that I am selling it, but simply put, I don’t want to sell it, but I have too many bikes. I need to buy a new truck. Trucks are very expensive, and unfortunately in this respect, I’m not Jay Leno. If you’re a Ford dealer we can talk, but please, no other trade offers.I've bought and sold other bikes on eBay and since you are going to be spending your money on something quite possibly sight-unseen, I am going to put as much info in here as possible. The fellow who bought my wife’s VStar using eBay this way, came up from south Jersey, rode it down the block to the stop sign, came back and told his wife; “pay the man.” Don’t just read my seller feedback - Read the comments themselves. People took the time to let prospective buyers like you know what they can expect from me. I don’t misrepresent, so bid with confidence, but this is going to cost more than a molested 1200 or late production model made from leftover or defective parts, or one that’s been down, repaired or powder-coated to hide imperfections. This bike is in showroom condition, never dropped – down, whatever, and it gets compliments every where I've taken it. It is so cool, it turns heads away from the cars at car shows. It has been maintained to near perfection and that is the value I’m offering you. This is something special. Know where it came from and what to expect. See how it stands out against the other ones here on eBay. If this is the type of ride you've been looking for, read on.About these bikes and this one specifically… I am not going to quote the BMW marketing blubs and specs. I am going to tell you much more. Yes, this is the type of bike used in the chase & jump scene in James Bond and on display in an art museum, and Michele Smith liked it on American Thunder, but that is only the hype part of it. The engine is a fuel-injected, horizontally-opposed 1170 cc, twin cam, twin chain, pushrod engine which has its roots in time-proven BMW technology. It has a lot of low-end torque. If you want even higher performance, you can change the cams and throttle bodies, but this is stock, unmolested and to me, great the way it is set up. Cooling is performed in a unique way by combining airflow across the cylinder heat sinks and by oil circulation through two radiators mounted in the front of the bike. You won’t roast because the heads aren’t underneath your seat like a V twin, and the engine lasts longer because there is no rear cylinder to overheat like there is on an air-blocked V twin. The front suspension is tele-lever, which is like a Chevy upper control arm and ball joint assembly. It makes for a really, and I mean really good setup. This is a BMW unique feature. I’ve found that it adjusts smoothly with any load, in any position, at any speed. The rear suspension is effectively an offset independent swingarm with a driveshaft. The rear tire bolts on like a car tire does. The rear shock is adjustable, the front is not. These are the stock shocks which are quite good as-is. Others are readily available. Because the cylinder heads (or jugs as we beemer folk call them) are low and out, the bike has fantastic balance and it is super easy to handle. I can putt-putt alongside my kids on their bicycles or ride the highway and anything in-between on this bike. The rear tire is huge, and the front is narrow. That gives you a great, solid ride with excellent, nimble handling. The rubber is Metzeler. These are excellent tires, and as you can see by the pictures, they are like new. The bike has ABS brakes and they are excellent. No skids when something unexpected happens. You get great control. The transmission is a 5-speed unit. BMW upgraded it early on due to a manufacturing defect (tolerances too close, causing binding). The clutch is dry, not wet. That means it shifts like a car, not like a motorcycle. It has a pressure plate, clutch disk and throw-out bearing. You drag the clutch a touch when you shift into 1st as that is the nature of the BMW beast. This is the original clutch – works perfectly and never abused. This bike has the high handlebars commonly called “ape hangers”. There are 2 other available bars which are lower, but these are the best to start with because you can change to any of the other two handlebars and not have to worry about changing any lines or wiring. If you need risers or pullback risers, you can get them if you need them – they’re available and easy to install. I added the BMW locking luggage saddlebags. These are an excellent design, leather over abs plastic. They can be used on the bike and then taken off in seconds by unlocking and moving a release lever. Then they become suitcases, with the integral handles. Quite nice. Check the pictures. Both in excellent condition thanks to leather cleaner & polish on a regular basis. One key fits all on this bike. I also added the chrome engine protection bars which have integral leg rests. They also have raised hooks on the outer parts to hold your feet in and they double as receivers for tie-downs if you have a trailer. If you trailer this bike, be smart and get some good sheepskin guards. The factory paint and pinstriping is as beautiful as the day I took delivery and you will surely cry if you damage it. The front engine cover, which covers the alternator belt and fuel injection crank trigger has been replaced from black ABS plastic to chrome. I am including the original one as well, but it sure looks nice with this one installed. Look at the optional rear hubcap I added. I doubt you will find one like it. They are very, very rare. There are others, but they are not as nice as this one. This is the original BMW version. I am very safety-conscious and I wanted front and rear running lights, so I added the Kisan Signalminder SM-5. This gives you 3 modes of running lights; off, dim or bright. I use dim at night, bright during the day. You select remotely in real-time using the bike’s stock handlebar controls. It also gives you a programmable cancel and rapid flash-to-pass turn signals. It’s a slick device and the running lights alone make you much more visible, which results in a safer ride. I also added the super bright red LED lights straddling the license plate. These will save your life. Just watch how far back people stop when these come on. They act as running lights and when you brake, they flash rapidly and then slow, then stop and stay bright as long as you hold the brake. They are lifesavers.I added the optional BMW Euro fog lamps too. The Phoenix (PIAA) lights, an alternate option, are problematic and the Euros are hands-down better. I put 50w bulbs in and changed the lenses to European yellow. They light up the road beautifully and oncoming traffic knows you're coming. They are wired to come on with the high beam as recommended by BMW. If you want to do it another way, I am including a new BMW alternate right side control which incorporates a switch for them. It’s your call if you want to change it, but when you want to light up the road fast, nothing beats a single button, and everything on a bike happens fast. I had the BMW windshield added. It is original and just from age, the top edge shows some safety lamination bubbles along about a thin perhaps ¼” strip, but this is very minor (see pictures). You can change it in a few years if you want, but as you can see by the pictures, it’s otherwise in excellent condition. The mounts are chrome, in excellent condition. The instrumentation has a speedometer, odometer, trip, low oil reserve warning light, low fuel (reserve) warning light, ABS status lights, turn signal indicator lights, alternator warning light, neutral indicator and high beam indicator. The turn signal indicators on mine glow based on the level of running lights setby the SM-5. Kind of neat actually. There were also some aftermarket housings to add two small gages. Generally folks add a tach and clock. I have the housing that is cast and chromed to exactly match the factory instrumentation. I never got around to adding them, but having the housing is important since I don’t believe they make one as nice as this anymore. You can add them at will. In production, there were some problems associated with these bikes. Each has been resolved on mine. o Tail light housing cracking: The tail light housing would crack due to stress. BMW ended up redesigning the housing and added a reinforcement plate behind it. I took an alternate route because I liked the look of the original design better. They provided me with a new housing and I reinforced the back of it with epoxy. It has never cracked and I doubt it will. o Chrome pitting: They definitely had a problem with chrome. My wheels were replaced early on. These wheels are excellent, heavy chrome and you will only find a few pinhead spots if you look very, very closely and run your finger over them. These are probably from brake dust holding moisture, certainly not from a lack of maintenance. I had the opportunity to have the mags put on, but I chose the spoke wheels. They are really, really nice as compared to some which are flaking or had to be powder-coated, and you will appreciate them in high cross winds. Besides, have you ever seen a spoke design like that? Tubeless tires on spoke wheels. That is BMW’s engineering. Look at the pictures, they tell the truth. As far as any pitting on the bike, there are two minor pitting areas I am aware of; one is inside the bezel of one of the fog lights and the other is on the trim rings on the top of the fork tubes. You can change both, but the pitting is so minor that you have to look to find it. It is seriously not worth the trouble at this point to do anything with either. Everything else is 100%, so ride and enjoy as people remark about it looking like it just rolled off the showroom floor. o Bucking: BMW was the first to offer a catalytic converter with fuel injection on a bike and they met the EPA regulations for emissions. To do that, they had to lean out the idle mixture. They also installed Bosch dual-ground plugs (FR6DDC), but they were no good and fouled easily. Add that to the fact that this is a driveshaft bike, there was bucking. (Driveshaft bikes tend do this naturally as there is no play in the drivetrain like there is in chain or belt drives on some other bikes). Anyway, by adding the fuel injection controller to enrich the mixture and by using Bosch +4 plugs, the bucking is negligible and the engine pulls very strongly when you throttle up. You can adjust it to suit your taste throughout the RPM range by changing the settings. I located the controller inside behind the right-side chrome tank panel. On the exhaust side, I added Staintunes to help the bike breathe (they look great don’t they?) and that also necessitated the use of the fuel injection controller (it’s like jetting if you know what that is). They are the best pipes – custom made in Australia and I ordered them direct. High-quality stainless steel. They go with the bike as do the stock mufflers. They make the bike sound unique... almost like a Porsche. Definitely European, they sound nice. Not loud unless you want them to be, and then they are really strong, which is the way pipes should be. Definitely a good balance between performance, looks and sound. On some final notes, there is a fellow by the name of Pokie who knows everything BMW. Years ago, Pokie machined two items called “Cammy Caps” and an oil fill plug. They were custom made to replace the stock plastic parts and to match the cooling fins on the Cruiser so as to look seamless. I have both installed. Neither are available anymore, and they look great (check the pictures of the cylinder heads). The factory tool pouch comes with the bike, the tire plugs need refreshing because I used them on my truck’s tire and one small open end wrench is missing. It must be around my garage and I will look for it. In any event, both can be gotten from BMW or most any shop and the kit is otherwise complete. If you want heated grips, note that I elected not to order them. I have the accessory socket and I use heated gear (vest, gloves, etc). There are many reasons why this is better (and debates), but if you want to add them, you can get them from BMW as well as the aftermarket. All rubber parts on the bike are in excellent condition. I also added some chrome screw covers (cap inserts). I am also including the center stand and dolly. These are the original Becker versions and they are the best. Use it when you clean & store your new Cruiser. You can roll it around the garage easily. It’s a very nice addition to this package. I’ve tried to put as much detail in the pictures as I could. They are not retouched at all other than the license tag information. In a couple of pictures of the tank, you can see some tiny white dots at full magnification. That is pollen from the trees when I rolled it outside the garage to take the pictures. There are no defects in the paint. That’s everything I can think of right now. If I find that I left something out, I’ll add it later. No warranty; express, implied or otherwise is provided. I will run the auction for a week. It is also for sale locally, and it is possible that it may sell outside eBay, so I reserve the right to end the auction early, unless the reserve price has been met. If you have little or no feedback, please contact me before bidding. If you have negative feedback other than minor nonsense, I am afraid that I will not be able to accept your bid. If you are the winner, then you must provide a deposit of $500 towards the purchase price via PayPal, which is non-refundable in the event that you don’t follow through on the purchase. If I have not described the bike as it is, then I have misrepresented it and you will receive your deposit back. Other than that, I see too many people on eBay with repeat listings because the buyer didn't follow through, so hopefully this will weed out those who aren't serious about buying something this nice. You do need to complete the payment within 7 days, so please be completely prepared for that time frame with financing, etc. if you elect to go that route. You will need to provide the balance in certified funds or wire transfer. If you plan to pick up your new ride personally, please be sure to bring cash or we will not be able to complete the deal at that time.If you are out of state and you have a friend in the area, let me know and I will be glad to show the cruiser. If you or a friend wants to fly in, I’m about 15 minutes from Islip Macarthur Airport (Southwest Airlines) and again, I will be glad to show it. As to shipping, pickup, etc., you can pick it up here or send a transporter. I’ll have everything ready for delivery and I will of course coordinate with you or your representative all along the way. If you arrive personally and need orientation to the bike, I’ll provide that as well. If you are planning to ride back, consider that someone will have to pick up all the additional items. I am not setup to package and ship them. You will receive my congratulations, a handshake and some good bike conversation. You will also receive the title, a bill of sale and I will of course, cooperate with you if you have any DMV requirements on your end - post sale. When I purchased one of my other bikes here on eBay from a fellow in Wisconsin, I had a friend check it out and complete the transaction. Then I had a transporter pickup the bike a week later. The seller was a very honest fellow. I am the same type of person - honest. If you have any questions and you are seriously looking for the right bike, please don’t hesitate to ask and I will do my best to answer to your satisfaction. Thanks for looking, good luck bidding. To the winning bidder, expect to be very happy with your purchase. It is a very special and one of a kind ride. On Apr-30-11 at 22:47:32 PDT, seller added the following information: (Postscript...
