Vehicle Detail
It was February, 2010 when I decided to surprise my wife on Valentine's Day with something really cool and romantic. I read that the 1950 Chevy truck is one of the most sought after trucks due to their classic lines, dependability and sheer number of vehicles made. I saw an ad on Ebay for this truck and I knew that as soon as I gazed at the photos, this Valentine's day was going to be my ticket to a lot of romance with my soon to be awestruck wife. The ad said that it was an old Georgia beater farm truck. The ad further stated that It ran well but needed a little carb work. Everything else sounded manageable to repair for a guy like me who knew nothing about automobile repair, except that you took your car to the mechanic when the warning light came on. With seconds left to bid on the truck and the Minimum Bid not yet arrived at, I offered $50 more, fairly sure that I would not win the bid. After all, I knew that it is best to see the vehicle first and listen to the engine and kick the tires before making a purchase unless you know what the heck it is that you would be getting yourself into. Alas, I won the Bid. Joy combined with trepidation over what I had done. I had the truck shipped down from Georgia. It was a thing of beauty when it arrived at my house a few days later. Trouble was, I couldn't get the truck started. No manual was included to instruct me on the secret location of the starter switch located on the floorboard. It started right up when I accidentally stepped upon the starter pedal. It was a powerful, throaty sound. I drove it around after about 30 minutes of trying to find reverse. All of my neighbors were VERY impressed and everyone who saw the truck appeared to be just a tad envious that I owned a piece of classic American ingenuity. My wife beamed when she saw it. I remembered that I had bought it for her so I reluctantly turned the keys over to her. She drove away- that's when I noticed all of the smoke coming from the tailpipe... A friend knew of a very thorough but inexpensive mechanic who has a small shop here in Venice, Florida. He quickly determined that I needed a valve job to eliminate the smoke. I'll save you the year of agony but i must report that this moron mechanic never was able to fix the truck. He somehow lost my original engine, radiator and battery during the next 12 months. My wife gave up trying to get the truck back and I bought her an electric guitar for this year's Valentine's Day. Now, dear reader, we are back to the present. The following was provided by my neighbor- Walt, who actually knows something about older cars: Up for auction is an old Georgia beater truck farm truck. It is a 1950 frame and cab with the bed off of a later model. It is a 3/4 ton. It has a heavy duty rear end with Bull dog four speed on the floor transmission. IT IS NOT CURRENTLY RUNNING. A "newer" 197_? 292 straight six engine was recently dropped in to engine but it has not been hooked up. I have several parts not shown, such as what appears to be the original carburator and oil filter, as well as some other parts. It needs at least a radiator and a battery. It does have a newer seat cover, back bumper and wood bed. The fuel tank was cleaned and resealed recently. The filler neck hose is new. The fuel level float in the tank is new but not connected. It has an under dash heater but is not hooked-up. The body is a little rough and in blue primer. It has been converted to a 12 volt system. Some of the glass is cracked and some of the rubber molding holding the windows in place has deteriorated. Clear Florida title. This would be a great project truck for someone who has basic mechanical skills, unlike the current owner. This truck is located in Venice, Florida 34293. Once you win the auction, I require 20% down paid by PayPal, cash or money order. The rest must be paid within seven (7) days after the auction is completed. NO REFUNDS on deposits or once paid in full. Call richard at (941) 400-9118 and I will get an answer from Walt if it is a technical question. It is understood that the truck is sold "As Is- Where Is" condition. I reserve the right to end the auction early as the truck is listed locally for sale. Good luck bidding on this wonderful truck!
