Vehicle Detail

2002 BMW R1150RT Sport Touring Not quite 72,000 miles from new - Always Professionally Maintained & Adult-Owned Original Doctor Owner for first 63,000 miles - Nearly All Dealer Service with Records Toured from VA to AL last fall for Barber Vintage Festival - 42+ mpg at speed Ready to go to new home around the corner or across the country without regret! Please wait for all pictures to load and read description carefully - this is a very good machine. Finished in rare Aqua Mint Metallic (medium blue), this R 1150 RT is cosmetically near-flawless throughout with only very minor scratches to finish and components (all detailed below). Bike was freshly tuned last fall (major service with air/fuel filters, plugs, valve adjustment, brake system fully flushed, gear and rear drive oils, et.c. et.c.) and has had a recent oil & filter change with Mobil 1 15W50 Synthetic and a K&N filter. Bike is about as well accessorized as one could imagine - all BMW cases with Bungee Buddies, Motolights, heated grips, ABS, Gadget Guy mount for Garmin Zumo, three power plugs, soft luggage for all bags, taillight flasher kit with optional turnsignal illumination for running lights, Throttlemeister, Grip Puppies and best of all, the original BMW Gel Comfort Saddles. Seen here fully kitted-out for touring... And naked here for a day trip. With bags... ...and without. The rear suspension can be adjusted for damping and preload in a minute or so to change it for passengers and/or cargo. I was loaded to the gills for my trip to the vintage festival last fall and the adjustable suspension made a lot of difference in how the bike handled with cargo. Tires are Pirelli Diablo Stradas and are almost new with barely 2,000 miles on them. They should be good for another 10k+. Front tire... ...and the rear. The original owner scuffed up both valve covers on a low concrete dividing wall in his garage - the bike has never been down for any reason. The left cover scuffs. Somewhat less on the right side. The absolutely worst blemish to the bodywork here on the left fairing upper, this scratch is amplified by camera flash as are the valve cover scuffs. I wanted it to be absolutely clear. You don't see it from here. The condition this bike is in - cosmetically and mechanically - is amazing for the mileage. I see bikes with half or less miles for much more in far lesser condition at the BMW dealership trade-in lots. Someone is going to get a very good deal here and have a great machine for a long time if they continue to maintain it as Don and I have. (Please note that the brake light is on since the bike has not been rolled over 3 mph following start-up - this is the ABS check process.) Amazing, right? The speedometer replacement was done by the dealer in 2004 and is documented in the records. I reserve the right to add a few more miles or allow for test rides during the sale, so the mileage may not be as you see it here when you pick up the bike. Nobody's going to Alaska in the interim, however.... The Big Mak tank bag brace - these bags hinge up to fill up with no fumbling around. If you want to delete it, the original gas filler hardware comes with the bike. You may have this tank bag with the bike - Big Mak still makes some great tank bags to fit this bracket if you want a newer or larger one. I have found this perfect to my needs. The optional fairing power plug... And two more beneath the seat. The relay in the background is for the Motolights, I believe. The original cases have some light scuffs from over 70,000 miles of careful touring. This one has a 'modified' lock - i.e. it does not lock. BMW made it mandatory that the bags lock onto the bike and lock closed without the key. I suspect Don - like me - wanted the option of having one case with easy, ready access. This case also has a small rub-through on the handles from a duffel bag bungee cord - it has not bothered me enough to repair it. Just the inevitable boot sole scuffs here as on the other side. Neither case has any cracks or loss. Custom-fit Australian Bestem luggage for the side cases and a Cee Baileys top case bag come with the bike. These are great and hold a lot of stuff since they were custom-made for the R1150RT luggage. Lest I forget, the best screen in the business is the Aeroflow. I am a tall rider and could not stand the stock screen, very noisy. This is a great add-on. I do not have the original windshield, it was stained and damaged, so I discarded it. The ultimate triumvirate - Throttlemeister bar-end weight cruise control, factory BMW heated grips (lo and hi) and Grip Puppies - the best $10 you'll ever spend on a BMW motorcycle. The Big Mak Tank Bag has a rain cover - just in case. All rear fender stickers are perfect. Here's a neat mod. Jens' 'Booster Plug' has an external temp probe and a resistor pack to fine-tune the intake air mix rather than just go by the hot airbox, since real intake air temps are not the static temp at the center of the airbox. This cures some of the light surging that well-tuned 1150s still have. Result - more smooth power especially around town. I recommend - and use it! Never buy a BMW without a full tool kit! If you have them, you won't need them! (If you don't... you might...) Don't forget a full set of books as well. How about those records and original spare keys with the key code tag! A LOT was done in Don's ownership - from regular maintenance to fork seals at 60k to a full spline service around 20,000 miles ago - all the way back to the original purchase order seen on the right. The bike lived all but the last two years in and around Long Island when not out touring the northeastern states and mid-Atlantic region in the care of its original owner. Since I've owned it, I've been fastidious - if not pre-emptive - about maintenance and care, plus I added the Aeroflow screen, the soft luggage, Grip Puppies and a few other odds and ends; Don had added the Motolights, Garmin mount and lots more you see above. Needless to say, you will be very impressed by the hanging folder of records you will receive if you bid to win. If you don't want the Zumo mount, I can remove it - a Zumo GPS is not included but are easy to come by second-hand! I have other mounts. who am I/why am I selling? I'm Chip Lamb, automotive journalist and jack of all trades in the collector automobile business. I own a small vintage car parts business and am active with many of the collector automobile and bike auctions throughout the USA. (Hats off to Glenn Bator for his recent 'marriage' to RM/Auctions America!) It was to go work Glenn's sale in Alabama last October that I rode this bike south for - and back - in style and comfort at speed. Lots of fun. However, I've got another touring machine I like for those really long highway slogs and I think I'd like something a bit more sporting, lighter-weight et.c. Maybe I'll just upgrade to a newer BMW - but I think I'm going to shop around a bit. I like my R1150RT a lot, but sometimes you just need to change out - not necessarily up or down. Friends of mine would tell you I'm absolutely meticulous about keeping my machines - cars, bikes et.c. - in tip-top order. A few scuffs don't bother me. The slightest hint of a mechanical problem would. The same was true for this machine's previous - and original - owner. I am absolutely shocked to see what passes for the average used R1150RT in the flesh, they are usually cosmetically hammered, like they've been left for dead, even with half or less miles on the clock. That's no way to buy anything either. Don't let the miles scare you off - I'd copy down all the work that's been done to this machine from cradle to now but I'd take up about as much room as I did above. That being said, I really haven't had to do much in nearly 10k and I don't predict you will either. If you're a brand-new rider, this is not the bike for you. That would be like turning the keys to the new Porsche over to little Jennifer on her sweet 16th. Ride a little Honda or a classic BMW airhead for a while and get your moves down. These are not difficult or tricky bikes but they are not for learning to ride on. So, good shape, good options, great color, great records, books, tools, keys - damn, it's like buying a Certified Pre-Owned machine from BMW that would cost you thousands more! payment/shipping terms Payment is due within seven days of auction close. Your bid is a binding contract to buy, not to look, think and/or then decide not to go through with this. There is no cooling-off period. You bid, you win. Period. (Can you tell I just had to explain this to an eBay virgin? Sheesh!) If you need any amendment to the above terms, please ask me prior to placing any successful bid on the bike. Accepted forms of payment are cash on pickup (though you'd be bringing a trailer as you don't get to ride home on my tag and insurance), certified cheque cleared in my bank account or a wire transfer similarly cleared. I will not remove the title from my filing cabinet until payment is made in full. At that time, I have no problem sending this to you so you can get tags. (If you live locally, I'll ride it over to you and take cash payment in full.) As an added note, inspection in person is possible prior to auction close. Test rides must be made by experienced riders with proper gear and the proven ability to pay for the bike in full at their time of departure lest something sticky happen on said test ride - my insurance does not cover you. I reserve the right to refuse all test rides. Oh, right, shipping. I'd like to see the flashing taillamp within fourteen days of auction close, again, unless any changes are made with me in advance of your successful bid. We do not issue temporary tags as we are not motorcycle dealers (damn, I just had that one thrown at me recently, too). If you need a shipper, I recommend the fine folks at Keyboard Motorcycle Shippers out of Tennessee - or Jim Vangelakos if you live along the I-95 corridor. Please make arrangements as early as possible so not to inconvenience either of us. I know right now that I'll be out of town from 28-30 April for a car auction in Pennsylvania but if you've already paid (hope so) I can always have someone meet you here. QUESTIONS? COMMENTS?
