This is just a Really Nice Car. The classic 2.3 liter engine that Volvo made their name on! VERY SWEET A real good road machine . In general very well cared for. ( No Reserve! Highest bid wins! No Reserve Sold to High Bidder Questions- 410-320-5589 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are bidding on a classic 740 Volvo Sedan. Listen….I’ve both owned, driven and sold a lot of 740 Volvos over the years. Despite the fact I’ve had newer ones than this and even ones with a few less miles. Doesn’t matter. This is a champ. One of the nicest ones I’ve ever come across. Not perfect mind you, but a very very nice car that anyone would be proud to own and drive. This car has another 10 years in it if someone wanted to keep it that long. Just a really nice driving, smooth road car. It is so strong, silky smooth out and stable out on the interstate. A real cruising joy. It’s fast, stable and powerful. As I said, the nicest 740 Volvo sedan I’ve seen in a long, long, time. (And as I said, I’ve seen a lot of 740s! Most of them by these days are a bit worn out. ) It’s naturally got a few idiosyncrasies like they all do, but overall is a real great example of this classic car. The fellow that owned this car was persnickety; that’s for sure and he kept it road worthy. I’ve driven this car now most of the week, and now after putting several hundred miles in it I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it to Florida and back right this minute. Nice on a number of fronts. Here’s just an over view of the details. A real detailed report and you’ll get every bit of info I can muster for you. Engine- The engine is Volvo’s ultra high quality and dependable 2.3 liter 4 cylinders…really the engine standout that Volvo really burnished their reputation on. Super strong, super dependable, easy to work on, just a legendary, generally super trouble free power plant. This engine’s in good shape. Engine oil shows clean. Engine is strong, and smooth. Starts easily. It particular it has better than average Volvo top end power and zip. At high speed out on the interstate, the car just really likes cruising easily at 65-75 mph. (You know how some cars are so poorly tuned, even tired feeling, they bog down and don’t seem to want to “go”?) This guy is just the opposite, cruises strongly and easily. Small oil drip on the front of the valve cover gasket (pretty garden variety issue). (they all seem to leak there.) Easy fix or ignore it. Oil is very clean. No “blow by”. And again, As you know, this particular engine can go well more than 300K miles and in some cases have gone well more than 500 K miles with proper care. Transmission shifts up through the gears perfectly as it should. Smooth and accurate on the shifts. Note: The paper foil service tag attached to the engine indicates (see picture ) a “BG” Transmission complete flush ) done just 20K miles ago. (A relatively expensive, super high quality Trans flush.) That alone, together with Volvo transmission reliability pretty much eliminates’ even the possibility of any at all transmission issues for a real long time . Tires - The car just re-passed VA state inspection at 145k miles, just a short while ago. At that time a brand new set of expensive KUMHO brand tires were put on. Easily $600 in tires (maybe a year and a half ago.) Good tread; a solid B+ to A-. Which with only 12 k miles on them, they are still in real nice shape. That’s probably one of the reasons it’s so smooth on the road. ` Brakes – The brakes feel fine . Smooth and strong. Maybe one of the few mechanical complaints …if you were really really critical, … a “car person type” might comment that , as I did, that brakes are might be 10 % towards soft. But that just looking for something to criticize. Otherwise absolutely fine. Steering. Another thing you’ll notice about this car … its just goes down the road flawlessly straight. No fade, pull or drift whatsoever. Stable, solid, tracks well in a straight line - in that "straight as an arrow" Volvo way Even at 75 mp hour. It’s also a great touring car. Remarkably smooth at 70-75 mph our. With the good tires it’s very stable and good on the open road. It’s also quite fast. Some [not this one !] Volvos seem a bit sluggish sometimes. This one is very frisky at top end speed. …another indicator to me it’s been carefully maintained and tuned through its life and driven gently. Heat is strong and very comfortable even in real cold. Fan blower motor is quiet on the dash (another nice point for aficionados... these fans are often noisy). Interior- Overall affect is luxury – REAL nice, with some modest expected wear . Quality leather in a deep black. Couple minor discolorations here or there, naturally but very minor. Couple weak places with cracking on the drivers seat, (picture) but again, for the age …way above average. And incredibly clean interior. Extremely nice. Again for folks that know Volvos …the state of wholeness of the map pockets are on the inside lower edge of the driver and passenger front doors tells you a lot as to how well this car was “loved “, and who owned it. . Perfect map pockets on both doors! Those of you who know Volvos and map pockets …You know the owner had to be just so carful to have two intact map pockets! Even in other “good “ Volvos the map pockets are missing , broken or at the very least seriously cracked. These are stone perfect. They are absolutely perfect; not even a scratch or crack. Actually quite remarkable for cars this age. I’m can’t confirm this, but I would certainly guess the car has been consistently garaged. Rear seat- Integrated arm rest in rear seat. Exhaust – Newish looking exhaust tailpipe and solid full length exhaust in ok to good shape. Rear bracket holding muffler on looks like was replaced with a heavy duty cable. Still solid. If I really strain sounds like there might be a small exhaust muff “ pft, pht, pht”, type leak leak, somewhere amids ships , just the sound of a small air leak , but again that’s being very critical . I’m going out of my way here to criticize it here. Most people wouldn’t even notice anything. Manual control sun roof – Excellent condition. Crank is proper and efficient. Not even a sign of leaks. Absolutely dry as a bone. Headliner must have been redone at some point because it’s so good looking. Power windows, locks and. mirrors are interior manual remote lever. Stereo is a nice looking Sony aftermarket Cd player that’s looks good but doesn’t turn on for some reason . Could need replaced or could be just fine and just need a wire or fuse. Not sure. . Honestly – the great used cars that you’re; looking for: What you look for in a used car is the mentality y and the energy of the owner. Over the years, it’s the owners mind and personality that make the car what it is. When the owner is carful, disciplined attentive to detail and ultra responsible…you get a used car that reflects that personality. That’s what you want. Though certainly not perfect, this car has that history it would seem. As well as immaculate cabin, the trunk area is super nice. Spare tire and jack as they should be. All lights and lenses are also perfect. They all light and are correct . The air conditioning – It’s sufficiently cold outside last week I couldn’t tell for sure whether the AC was working or not. Play it safe and assume its not, and if it is, you’re ahead of the game. I've driven it maybe 400 miles already. Just a real nice classic . Just a dependable, simple, smooth classic that should last a number of more years because it was so well taken care of. The body is excellent, exceptionally good for an older car. Though not perfect. One ding on left rear corner about size of a soap bar. Several other minor scratches, otherwise remarkably straight. No rust whatsoever on the body. Underneath also, no rust at all other than the normal fine skim on selected surfaces. Also excellent. Paint is excellent . Excellent. Even without waxing the car came in as bright, and fresh. Looks pretty good and the impression are rich and sumptuous. I don’t know this, this is pure conjecture, but the car almost certainly would have to have spent a major lifes’portion of it’s time in a garage to be so fresh on the outside. Even the exterior window gasketry and rubber window and door moldings are in near mint condition. No sun damage at all. Unusual. The trunk is immaculate and the jack and spare all present, the spare is junk. Twenty dollars at a used tire place gets a good used spare. The only other thing to declare is the generally consistent presence of a check engine light lit. I noticed no irregularity whatsoever in day to day driving unless I let the car just sit and idle for a considerable time . It idles very nice, strongly ands smoothly , except just once in a great while it will modulates its pace a little bit and goes a little up or a little down in tempo. In a slit second it catches itself and immediately goes back to smooth idle and may not do that fumy little thing unless you let it sit and idle for another 10 or more minutes. Otherwise, it’s utterly smooth and quite and does what it’s supposed to. I was yesterday told by a knowledgeable Volvo expert this little idle oddity is caused by one of 3 things , none of which is a big deal, and probably not even worth fooling with unless you want it perfect. Hes says its either a dirty throttle body , the fuel pressure regulator acting up or the idle air control valve is clogged. Which ever of those 3 it might be , I’ve no idea of course. But since this is in no way seems to effect driving the car day to day I hesitate to even mention it, but in the interest of fullest disclosure there it is. As I said , I wouldn’t even hesitate a minute on taking a 1000 mile road trip with this car. The car’s perfectly fine for daily driving as it is. Dependable, comfortable, steady and smooth. Actually terrific, as I’ve said. Safety, weight and strength in a crash – Hey what can one say? It’s a sturdy, heavy solidly built Volvo. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Safety for you – A few years back, Volvo advertised a campaign based on solid empirical data upon which to make their safety guarantee offer. Amazingly, Volvo will tell you that no driver deaths occurred in single-vehicle crashes or rollovers of the Volvo 240 car during the 1990-94 periods. Not one. Amazing safely record.” Accidental Loss of Life" insurance policy for all '96 models, they had Volvo made its reputation for safety and dependability with these cars. You will notice there are still a lot of them around for a reason. They are extremely strong, safe cars. If you want to Buy It Now …. In the interest of selling it quickly I’ve reduced it for the eBay sale. [It has been for sale locally, financeable, for $3,295and it’s still here. It just needs to go. ] Now, we will just sell it for cash. The Buy It Now for the eBay sale has been reset to just $2,188. ……….just to sell it. Lot of car for not much money. That’s fair. Very fair, indeed for this car, condition and nice as it is. Again, please call me with any question or concern. I will help you if I possibly can. Jim, 410-320-5589.
