Mercedes 124 Chassis Styling………… Full Instrumentation……. 2.5 L Turbo Diesel Powerplant ……… Description: Ah yes, one of my all-time favorite vehicles, the Mercedes 124 chassis diesel! Here’s a clean Mercedes diesel sedan that we bought out from under everyone else. That’s right, my buyer snatched it right up and left others standing there with jaws on the ground. Anyone who has watched my listings for a while knows that I have a preference for these vehicles. This one has been serviced and is ready for the next owner. Options: Finished in classic white with a blue accent stripe and tan MB Tech™ upholstery, this CLEAN 1992 Mercedes 300 D Turbo Diesel features about everything that you expect in a German luxury sedan beginning with the smooth and responsive 2.5 Liter 5-cylinder Turbo Diesel powerplant teamed with a 4-speed automatic transmission, driver SRS (air bags) w/belt tensioner system, fully automatic climate control featuring a retrofit R134a refrigerant charge, 4-wheel ABS (anti-lock brakes), power windows, central locking system, power mirrors, power driver and passenger seats, factory alloy wheels, factory sound system, 4-wheel disc brakes, cruise control, power sunroof, rear window/rear view mirror defroster much more! Yet ANOTHER Clean Southern Ride! This vehicle is riding on a good set of touring tires! Service and Inspection Report: We brought this clean Mercedes in for service and noted some items that were necessary to meet our standards. Read on. The big item was the automatic transmission. It shifted but was not up to par so we decided to send it out for a complete rebuild, torque converter and all. We don’t install some “off the shelf” unit that has been buggered to high heavens, we take the vehicle’s original transmission, gut it and replace the service parts required. While we had things apart, we replaced a rear main engine oil seal. Before installing the freshly built 722.4 transmission, we flushed the oil cooler system so the entire system would be clean. After installation, the transmission now shifts and works as designed. We’re not going to push off a problem on someone, we’re going to do things right! Moving along, we went under the hood and installed a new valve cover gasket and turbo breather hose/grommet at the valve cover. After nearly 30 years of service, those items get hard and brittle and begin to leak oil. It is not a hard job, just not something that you want to do. We continued by replacing both the primary and secondary fuel filters. Before we closed the hood, we noticed that the serpentine belt was old and beginning to show signs of age. We also noted that the belt tensioner assembly was worn so we replaced the belt tensioner, belt shock/stabilizer and idler wheel. The belt is squarely on the accessories and is now good to go. Most dealers would have told you that “ahhh…it looks all right to me…”, but we don’t’ subscribe to the typical methods. Finishing under the hood, we did an engine oil/filter change and replaced the oil level sensor O ring as a maintenance item so that you wouldn’t have to bother with it. It was not leaking, but now’s the time to replace that little O ring while the oil is drained. We also installed a new engine air filter and cleaned the turbo intake hose, buttoning up those items for you. Moving along to the chassis, the brakes looked good, front and rear. We replaced a few burned out bulbs and finished by installing a new wiper blade. This model has a single wiper for the windshield and who needs worn out wiper blades? NOTE: The vehicle’s history shows an accident involving a front impact with another vehicle. Looking over the vehicle, it has a new RH headlight assembly and turn signal lens, along with a new radiator. We suspect that the impact was minor as there is no structural damage noted. The paint appears original and there are OEM labels on the fenders. When we removed the engine fan to replace the belt tensioner assembly, the fan appears to be original and was definitely tight, a sign that no one has had it apart since the car was built. All in all, we did what would have amounted to $4,000 worth of service to this vehicle if you bought all of this after the sale yourself! Shop around and then ADD IT UP!
