Vehicle Detail

Up for auction today we have a very special 1988 Monte Carlo Super Sport. The 1988 model is the last and best year of the SS. This car began as a stock model and was then professionally customized and upgraded over several years. The final product is really a beautiful car that will attract attention from everyone who sees it. If you’re shy this is not the car for you! Let’s start with the interior. Although originally maroon, it has been completely redone in black and red vinyl. Everything in the interior has been removed and replaced with top quality materials. The original GM interiors in these cars do not age well and with the exception of the seatbelts, there’s nothing original left in this one. Look at the pictures carefully to see the details of what has been done. Obviously the seats and door panels are custom but there are lots of other nice touches to be found. The sag prone headliner has been replaced with a custom black vinyl one. The dash has also been redone in black and has no cracks like the majority of these cars. Of course there’s also new black carpet and custom Chevy floor mats to keep it looking nice. All of the plastic trim has been professionally dyed black and looks great. Thousands of dollars and a lot of time have been spent to make this one special interior. The tilt steering column is nice and tight and all of the gauges, switches and controls look and function well. The only flaws worth mentioning are a cracked turn signal lever and a missing trim piece on the passenger’s side door pull. All of the windows have a very dark professional limo tint that may or may not be legal in your state. The car is equipped with a keyless entry system and an UNGO alarm system that appears to work. It’s a little complicated but it beeps, chirps and otherwise annoys me. The exterior of the car has also received lots of attention. The car was stripped to bare metal and repainted in jet black with painted on red stripes. In the photos the paint may appear a little cloudy but it’s actually very black and shiny. This is a professional paint job is not a Macao respray. That being said, it’s not perfect. The car is extremely straight as a result of lots of block sanding and effort. The paint shows well and is very, very nice but there are minor flaws that are hard to photograph. As you know black cars show every flaw, so it not hard to find some here but I’d call the paint job an 8.5 out of 10. The paint looks better than many new cars I’ve seen, especially in its lack of orange peel. There are some minor nicks in the bumpers that you can see in the photos. This is not and never has been a rusty car. There is no rust in the rear frame rails like so many of these cars. The floors and body panels all appear to be the original GM parts. There has been some minor bodywork over the left rear wheel that is hard to show in photos. The doors and trunk lid edges are nice with no evidence of rust repair. There is a small dent on the right rear quarter that could be fixed without any paint work. There is also a decal on the left rear quarter panel that could be removed if you so desire. There are two minor areas on both quarters where the stereo enclosures in the trunk have caused small dings from the inside. See the photos. The car also has tinted headlight covers that are easily removed for a different look or to pass inspection. Obviously the main focal point of the exterior is the rolling stock. The cars is wearing a set of 22” Davin rims with Nitto 255/30/22 tires. The rims have spinners that can’t be seen in operation but they work well and catch lots of looks especially when you come to a stop. The tires are in good condition with good tread with the exception of the inner area of the rear tires. The tires don’t rub when driving straight but you must be careful when making tight turns as they rub a little on the inside wheel wells. If the giant wheels are not your style you could remove them and replace them with something else. The tires and wheels were over $4000 new so they could be sold to recoup some of your investment if they’re not your style. The suspension is stock and has not been cut up or modified. Another unique feature of the Monte Carlo is the incredible stereo system. Over $5000 was spent on the system which was professionally installed by a local shop. The head unit is a Clarion VRX745VD. .There are six Autobahn subs in the trunk installed in a custom enclosure and at least four Rockford Fosgate speakers in the interior. There are also at least two chrome plated amps mounted in the trunk. Let us not forget the two video monitors mounted under the trunk lid! These are in addition to the video screen that’s part of the head unit. I’m not a stereo expert but all of these things appear to work well. It’s loud and if you want to scare old ladies and children this might be your ride. Like the wheel situation, if the expensive stereo doesn’t suit you tastes it could easily be removed and sold. The mechanical of side of the car is in great shape. The odometer read 14,XXX miles and I’m sure it’s turned over. The engine appears to be the original L69 305 4bbl V8. It feels stock and runs well with no smoke, knocking, or strange noises. It’s no powerhouse but it will get you where you’re going. The 4 speed overdrive transmission shifts fine. The rear axle is the original 3.73 posi. There is new dual exhaust as seen in the photos. There are no mufflers but the factory catalytic converter does a good job of keeping the car from being too loud. There are lots of new parts on the car including the gas tank, radiator, hoses, belts, and alternator. All of the smog equipment is still present and accounted for. The car drives fine and the brakes, steering and suspension all appear to be in good condition. The A/C is all there but needs a charge. Also the cruse control is not working. The underside of the car is clean for a car of this age with only normal seepage that one would expect of a 23 year old car with its original drive train. The car would be a great foundation to turn into a serious hot rod. The addition of a nice crate motor would really take this car to a new level if you’re a racer. Or if prefer to just cruise, you could just leave it alone, it’s your choice. As noted in the Auto check report the car has a rebuilt from salvage title. This was a result of the car being stolen in the 1990s not as the result of an accident. The car can be registered in any state without any additional inspection (excluding any safety or emissions requirements that pertain to your state) Keep in mind that the cost to duplicate this car would easily exceed $25,000 not to mention years of your time and lots of hassles. The reserve on the car is far less than half of that number and there’s no waiting or looking for parts all over the map. Obviously a car like this is being sold as-is, where is. For this reason we welcome and encourage an .inspection before purchase. If you are the winning bidder you will be expected to complete the transaction per eBay policy. There will be no post sale negotiation. The time to ask questions is before the auction ends, not after you’ve bought the vehicle. I’d be happy to answer all question to the best of my ability but keep in mind that this type of car is beyond my normal scope of expertise.
