Vehicle Detail

C'mon, Get Happy! 1971 VW WESTFALIA CAMPMOBILE O ffered For Sale is a lovely Volkswagen Westfalia Campmobile Bus. It's in great condition - both cosmetically and mechanically. The bus has always been taken care of and considered a loving member of the family. This campmobile features a stainless steel sink, ice-box, folding bed, cabinets, dining table, original radio, and cool features galore! It's clean inside/out - and in very stock condition; you'll be impressed. The bus is a blast to own, drive, and explore nature with. Engine is smooth and has ample power...better than you'd think! Transmission is excellent, and all the gears operate flawlessly. This Westy is a real crowd-pleaser and it will make you smile. It's ready to go; all it needs is a loving owner who appreciates these well-engineered and cleverly designed VWs...they're the original SUV! Over the decades, many VW Buses have unfortunately fallen prey to neglect, accidents, modifications, or were driven into the ground. Not this example though; it's a survivor. After 40 years, this classic still rides proudly in the essential Volkswagen tradition - simple, precise, and economical. ............ Dash is simple, yet functional, just like every vintage VW. All gauges and lights work; so do the wipers & horn! Turn signals work, too, but the assembly holding the switch to the steering wheel shaft is a little loose and needs a new rubber to make it tight again. Click on the Images for Larger Picture ............ The interior is amazingly clean and still looks "crisp." Upholstery is in fantastic condition, and has recently been redone - all cushions - from front to rear. Rubber mats are excellent, and are factory originals, complete with embossed VW insignia. ................... Factory SAPPHIRE radio is intact. It may be disconnected, however, as I couldn't get it to function. Odometer shows 85.3K miles, and judging by this Westy's cosmetic condition, it could well be the original mileage. This bus has a factory air-conditioning unit mounted under the dash, which is very rare for this year. All components for the system are intact, with exception of the compressor, which is missing. ................... What's also very cool about this Bus is that all the factory stickers (written both in German & English) are still present and in great shape. It's usually these small details that show a vehicle hasn't been abused, but rather cared for and looked after. ............ All the comforts of home: dining table, sink, ice box, and plenty of storage space. All we need is a bottle of wine and some candles. Cushions are supportive and look great. Wood ceiling is excellent and the curtains have been replaced recently. It's quite a cozy setting, indeed. .................. ................. ** Cabinets & closets are in very good condition and the accessories, such as folding tables, etc. are intact. ** Ice-box is complete and "sanitary." Even the shelf, which usually is MIA in most cases, is still here. ** Stainless steel sink definitely comes in handy, and the pump is electrically powered. The reservoir tank, however, has a small leak, and water will trickle out when it's filled. Click on the Images for Larger Picture ............ Rear seat transforms in a matter of seconds to folding bed....and a room with a view! Click on the Images for Larger Picture Pop-top opens easily, offering walk-around versatility and fresh air when out camping. Tent material is old and should be replaced in the future, as there are some tears and snags w/ the zippers. ............ Panels show a deep reflection, and the body is quite straight, taking age and use into consideration. Under close inspection, there are some small dings, etc. on the panels, but nothing to worry about. Front nose of the bus is quite vulnerable; therefore it has a couple minor dents & flaws, but nothing detrimental or uncommon. The sanitary white finish is this Westfalia's original color; but it has been resprayed, so it's not the factory paint. I could not find any rust or corrosion, even under the windshield, which is solid, with no signs of rot. Underneath, the pans are solid and original - no holes or problems. Click on the Images for Larger Picture .................. ................. Even under the rubber mat, floors are in great condition. Quite often, these areas are rotted through, but not on this one. Nothing to hide here. All around, this bus is in great shape! ................. More "time-capsule" details: original embossed "VW" gas cap; factory fuel decal is still present...not crudely painted over, as many are. The tried & true Volkswagen "upright" engine is a 1600cc. This design is the traditional style used on scores of VWs for decades, ending with 1971. For buses 1972 and on, a flat "pancake" motor was used, which is more complicated. This Bus has the preferred motor that is familiar to work on, with parts availability galore. That's one of the reasons 1971 Buses are highly sought after. In addition to being the final year to have the aforementioned upright motor, 1971 models are the first to have disc brakes. 1971 also saw the last of the "traditional" small red taillights. Newer buses had long, brick-shaped units that weren't as pure to the original design. This motor runs strong, and it always starts right up. If it's been sitting awhile, there's a slight oil leak on the exhaust manifold that will create the smell of oil burning. Once driven regularly, this doesn't occur as often. In addition, the bus is a little cold-blooded, and in the morning it needs to warm-up to prevent it from stalling. It's probably an adjustment to the choke, as when it's warm, the idle is steady and consistent. A recent major service was performed approximately 1200 miles ago, to the tune of $1300.00. The details are as follows: ** Brakes were serviced, with new front rotors, calipers, and pads. ** Oil was changed; valves adjusted. ** Steering linkage was adjusted so it's nice and stiff. No play or looseness; a new tie rod was installed. Take a Test Drive! Click on YouTube video Above ....................
