Vehicle Detail
1973 INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER SCOUT II Up for auction is my 73 Scout. Here are the particulars: DRIVETRAIN: Original 345 V8 (2bbl) with just over 54,000 miles. Starts everytime and runs like a champ. It's had a few things done (water pump, plugs, wires, a new fan shroud etc...). Original 727 Torqueflight 3 speed automatic. Shifts nice and smooth. Original Dana 20 2 speed transfer case goes in and out of 4 high and low with no problem and has never let me down. Has the original Dana 30 front and Dana 44 rear that cruise down the road nicely with 3.73 gears. The original lock-o-matic hubs spin nice and free. This things runs great and cruises down the road at 65-70 all day. SUSPENSION/TIRES: I added a Rough Country 2.5 inch lift to it. Not real high but makes it look nice and gives it a little more clearance. The lift included new springs with poly bushings and new shocks and hardware. I added shims and an IH steering brace (not standard on the 73 models) from IH Only North along with a steering stabilizer. The tires are 31" Timberline AT's with about 75% tread left. They are mounted on American Racing (I think) brushed aluminum 15x10 rims. This Scout drives very nice and straight with no road walk. EXTERIOR: It has been freshly professionally painted (Aug.2010) with the original IH Gold. It is not a show quality paint job but it looks great going down the road. There are a few very small dings that did not get taken out and a small line in the passenger front fender that did not come out completely. I have tried to photograph it but it is very hard to get it to show up. There is no rust, and never has been any rust on any of the exterior panels. I was planning to put on different mirrors but have not as of yet. I still have the original small square mirrors that will go with the vehicle. The bumpers are original. The front bumper is straight however the chrome is peeling behind the plate I have on it. All the lights work. The glass is all original and in great shape. There is one small rock chip above and right of the rear view mirror. I also installed all new poly body mount bushings and hardware. It sits very straight and level. INTERIOR: The original seats have been recovered in black vinyl. The fronts were covered with the seat kits from IH Only North and the rear seat was done locally. The original seat belts are all installed and functional. The seat bases are solid and rust free. The dash pad is perfect. The original gauges function with the exception of the gas gauge (I'm assuming a sending unit problem but have never checked. I just fill up by miles driven). The IH dash clock, of course, does not work (never had one that has). The headliner was replaced with a soild surface sheet. I put a new carpet kit in June 2010. The carpet is the full kit black loop. It came with the front and rear passenger carpets as well as the cargo, sidewalls, wheel wells, tailgate and kick panel pieces. They are all in and look great. I had new passenger area and cargo area thresholds bent out of diamond plate, they also look very nice. The arm rests are in good shape. The door panels are the original tan. I have been up in the air about what to do with them. My plan was to dye them black but they look fine as is. I have the black carpet pieces for the door panels as well. It has new door and cargo gate rubber seals installed. The heat blows hot and the AC blows cold. The thermostat dial on the AC bar went out and I just wired in a switch that sits between the dash and AC bar. I have had many problems with those little thermostat dials and this is a nice fix for it. It has a new JVC CD player with HD radio and Sony Speakers. The only rust that I found on the Scout was a few small places in the cargo area. They were repaired before the carpet was installed. I did not have the interior metal repainted when the exterior was. It is an exact color match but it does show 37 years of use. The good news is I have a half a gallon of the paint left from the paint shop. That is more than enough to do the interior if you wanted and any repairs you ever had to make to the exterior. KNOWN PROBLEMS: The oil pan gasket leaks. I replaced it once but did not do a good job and it needs to be replced again. The brakes are okay but it will need at least front brakes before too long. The aforementioned gas gauge and clock. I would also replace the top to windshield frame gasket. I planned to do it the next time I took the top off but haven't had it off this year. BOTTOM LINE: I really enjoy this Scout. It is a blast to drive and gets alot of attention anywhere it is parked. I bought it a few years back from its second owner in California, where it had lived its whole life. I built it to be a driver and that is what it is. I drive it about every other day depending on whether I need my truck or not. Although it is a driver it can hold its own at any cruise strip and really stands out. I don't really want to sell it and have been back and forth about keeping it. The reason I am letting it go is I am about to start my 67 IH Travelette dream project. When that truck is finished the Scout will get very little road time. I don't like for vehicles to sit and this one deserves to be driven. I live in north central Oklahoma. If you're close feel free to come and see it before you bid. TERMS: I have described this vehicle to the best of my abilities but it is a 37 year old Scout.
