Vehicle Detail
In 2000, just after I purchased the M5, I had the engine removed from the car and sent to Metric Mechanic, Inc. in Richland, MO for a MM 3700 HiFlo ST engine rebuild. This is a high performance rebuild by a highly regarded company in BMW circles. Details below. I bought this car from a good friend of mine in Portland, Oregon in 2000. The car had a salvage title when he bought the car but he assured me that the car was in excellent condition despite being on a salvage title. When I received the car, I checked and found out that all four doors and the trunk lid were original as they had the original VIN tags still on them. I could not find a VIN tag on the front hood so it is possible that it was replaced. All doors, hood and trunk open and operate as they should. There are no rattles or squeaks when you drive the car. I just had the alignment checked on all four wheels and it is 100% within BMW specifications. The person I bought the car from believes that the owner previous to him, who owns a high-end body shop in Oregon, may have written an inflated damage estimate for the car owner at that time enabling the car owner to "total" the M5 and collect the insurance proceeds. The body shop owner then repaired the car and kept it as his personal driver for two years before selling it to my friend who subsequently sold it to me. This rebuild cost $8500 plus removal, shipping and installation...about $10,500 total. Displacement was increased by about 200 cc to 3.7 liters by boring and stroking the engine. The link below explains all that is involved in a Metric Mechanic rebuild:http://metricmechanic.com/catalog/anatomy-of-2200-3200-3500.php The M5 also has a Dinan chip and current horsepower should be in the 360 to 370 range. At the same time, a new clutch kit, exhaust cam gear and thermostat were installed. The mileage on the car at the time of the engine upgrade was 62,000. I have driven the M5 for an additional 38,000, trouble free miles since the rebuild. I am 65 years old and the M5 has never exceeded 90 mph since I have owned it. It has not been on the track or entered in any speed event. As you may or may not know, the 91s came with a 3.91:1 final drive instead of the taller final drive (3.73:1) of the later cars. This also enhances the acceleration of the car compared to later versions. As you can see from the images, I removed the 1991-only, turbine wheel covers from the stock wheels of the 91 M5s. I, like many 91 owners, thought that it gave the wheels and the car a much cleaner look. All of the removed wheel parts come with the car. I am amazed at how few 91 M5s still have the original wheels.Virtually all receipts since I bought the car in 2000 come with the car. There is also a BMW 6-disc CD player that comes with the car which I have never installed. Currently the M5 needs a replacement driver’s side fog light ($120.) The technician who checked the alignment on the M5 told me that one of the rear shocks of the self-leveling rear suspension is apparently "weeping" fluid. These are expensive items (about $700) and most owners don't replace these shocks but buy a kit to convert the car to conventional rear shocks at a much lower price. The self-leveling system seems to be working fine despite the minor leak. The battery is fresh and all tires have 50% or more of new tread depth remaining on them. The company detailing the car for me did not want to steam clean or power wash the engine compartment which is why it looks a little dirty in the images. The original window sticker comes with the car and it shows the only factory option of heated seats (almost everything was standard) and a MSRP of $60,600. The E34 M5 is a sports sedan in every sense of the term. You will never confuse it with any other E34 5-Series. The sound of the engine is worth the price of admission alone.I can supply copies of the window sticker, CarFax report, any invoices, alignment report, etc. upon request to ferporjag@Yahoo.com. I can assist in arranging any inspection you might desire.
