1976 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper Bus For more pictures and information go to our gallery at www.sdcvr.com. Up for auction is a recently finished restoration/preservation of ours... a 1976 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper. We started with a very clean canvas to work with. She came to us with very little rust, a complete interior, straight body lines, and excellent maintenance history. When starting with such an excellent candidate, the result is an even more amazing finished Bus. A break down of the work performed is below. We stripped her down to a near shell upon arrival at the shop. As this Bus is a restoration/preservation, we set aside excellent condition/rebuildable interior parts, and assorted mechanical parts. Exterior/Body After stripping to a shell, we spot media blasted several areas of the Bus - rear corners, battery tray, a 3" section under the front windshield, and the left side of the front floor. These were the only areas on the body needing rust repair. These areas were cut out and replacement panels were welded in, metalfinished and sealed. The body was amazingly straight, needing only the rear corners to be bodyworked, with the rest of the body receiving a few rounds of block sanding. After sealing, we sprayed the lower half of the body with Savannah Beige, and the upper half a custom mix of pure white tinted with the lower body color. Interior metal was sprayed this same custom white. Three coats of clear, colorsanding, polishing, and she was ready to reassemble. Assembled with new seals all around. All glass is original to this Bus with the exception of the windshield, which is new. The jalousy window frames were disassembled, media blasted and lightly polished before reassembly with new seals. The bumpers were straightened and painted silver white, while the wheels were powdercoated to match. The fiberglass top was prepped and painted with a 2 part epoxy enamel which is weatherproof, tough while still allowing the top to flex with use. The coating is similar to the paint/coating used in marine/hull applications. A new canvas top was installed along with new seals for the pop top. New headlight rings, headlight assemblies, turn signal lenses, taillight assemblies and lenses, reflectors and bases, wipers and arms, wiper nozzles, emblem, hubcaps are just some of the new parts used during reassembly. All chrome handles were polished before reinstalling with new seals. Interior All cabinetry is original to this Bus. Several small pieces were relaminated used original donor laminate, as a matching modern laminate is not available. Front seats were modified to accept armrests, and upholstered in faux leather vinyl, as well as the rear seat and upper and rear cushions. This model was a standard Westfalia, which means that there was no stove/refrigerator. We added both of these, with the cooking unit powered by propane that is accessible under the sink unit. The headliner was originally covered in a white vinyl. This was replaced by birch plywood which was stained and sealed. The flooring is an industrial-type vinyl with a slight pebble texture... the colors compliment the interior and exterior nicely. Rear seat folds down to sleep 2, upper cot area sleeps 2 adults, along with a cot that mounts over the front seat which can sleep 1 child. Mechanical We rebuilt a later 2.0 liter longblock with hydraulic lifters for this Bus. All tin was powdercoated gloss black. Electronic ignition, 75amp alternator, completely rebuilt fuel injection system... a must have for our California customers and the current smog laws. Also installed was a fully rebuilt transmission from Rancho Performance transmissions. Other items replaced during reassembly - engine/transmission mounts, CV joints, axles, shift rods/couplers, shocks front and rear, tie rods, drag link, ball joints, centerpin replaced. Complete new brakes front and rear - up front... new discs, calipers, pads, soft and hard lines, master cylinder, rebuilt brake booster. In back, new drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, soft lines, hard lines, emergency brake cables. Wheel bearings all around where replaced along with new seals. Why stop there? We installed a new wiring harness, made here at the shop. Front to back, all electrical items work properly. Dual battery with isolator also installed. She starts, drives and stops as nice as you would expect. Less than 300 miles since restoration. Potential buyers are welcome to come by the shop and check her out prior to bidding, call or email for an appointment. Title is clear, registration is current, this Bus is ready to drive, camp and cruise! There is no reserve, so bid to win... good luck!
