Audi gave the 4.2L A6 a brawny look that will never be confused with that of the lesser car. The nose has been stretched about 1.5 inches, the wheel openings are strongly flared to clear the 1.4-inch-wider stance and larger tires, the suspension crouches lower by 0.4 inch, and the front air intakes have been opened substantially for added cooling. The hood, the front fenders, and much of the front suspension are aluminum. Powered by a V8 4.2 engine pushing 300 HP featuring a five-valve cylinder head design (three intake and two exhaust), three-stage variable-length intake system, and variable camshaft control matted to a 5-speed automatic transmission with a Tiptronic feature that enables the driver to slap the shifter sideways out of the normal P-R-N-D-3-2-1 gate into a parallel gate that allows sequential upshifts and downshifts simply by tilting the spring-loaded lever forward or backward.
