Vehicle Detail
This 1973 AMC Hornet, while fun to mess around with and drive, no longer suits my needs, so it is up for sale. At only slightly more than 86,000 actual miles, this car is a great example of American Motors style. For more photos, please visit www.1973-amc-hornet.blogspot.com. It was kept in Washington state and Oregon for its first 36 years. I bought it in early 2009 and brought it to the Chicago area where it was my daily driver, except in the winter. It has never been exposed to road salt! It is now in southern California and while I don’t have garage space for it, I keep it covered when not in use. The car cover is included in the sale. The body is in its original two-tone paint, "Snow White over Copper Tan," and shows normal wear for its age. At least one of the previous owners used touch up paint on both colors. The only thing missing from the body is the color matched piece of vinyl that is supposed to fill the gap between the body and the rear bumper. There is some minor surface rust in the typical places; along the bottom edges of the passenger side doors and on the rear quarter panel. I had to replace the original side mirror, but couldn’t find the right style, so I went with an older one. It looks OK and, more importantly, it works. The interior – with two exceptions – is factory original. A previous owner thought it would be really cool to install an AM/FM/Cassette player, which occupies the space in the dash originally filled by the factory AM radio. A pair of speakers also was installed in the front doors (one is missing the grill). I also had to replace the foam rear dash liner using a similar colored piece of low pile carpet. It looks fine and is very close to the same color as the original. There are minor scuffs on the door panels and a few cracks in some of the trim plastic, but not out of the ordinary for a car this age. The details: Freshly rebuilt 258-cubic inch (4.2L) straight six. Parts are amazingly easy to find, since this was the standard engine in most Jeeps up until the early 80s. I run an open K&N air filter on the stock Carter single barrel carb, but still have the stock “snorkel” style air cleaner unit.· Automatic transmission. I’ve done nothing to it and it runs fine.· Numerous new parts in the front suspension (pitman arms, lower control arm, bushings, etc).· New rear shocks new rear leaf springs (raised the rear end by about 2 inches)· New BF Goodrich Radial TA tires, P205/70/R14 in front and P235/60/R15 in back· New American Racing Wheel Torque Thrust II polished aluminum wheels, 14 x 7 front and 15 x 8 rear· New exhaust, almost factory except for the Cherry Bomb muffler (not too loud, just enough) This was – and still is – a bare bones car with no frills or extras. Brakes and steering are manual, windows have hand cranks, the doors must be locked/unlocked with a key, and the air conditioning is the tried and true 4-60 model (4 windows down, 60 miles an hour). Definitely not for the pampered or the faint-at-heart, but still fun to drive. I entered it in the 2010 Spring Rod Run in Temecula, CA. It didn’t take any prizes, but got lots of second looks during the cruise night and people are always asking about it. This is truly a one-of-a-kind survivor that will make a great restoration project or serve you well as a driver. This car is offered “as is” with no warranty either written or implied. Sale is final. 25% of the sales price is due within 48 hours; full payment is due within 7 days. SERIOUS BIDS ONLY, PLEASE! DON'T BID IF YOU DON'T INTEND TO BUY. The car is located in Temecula, CA. I have some recommendations about who NOT to use if you need the car shipped, so call me first. California registration is valid through Jan 2011.
