Vehicle Detail

It is finally time to sell one of my two Porsche 944 Turbos.I am selling it because I recently got married, we are starting a family, and recently purchased a 2008 Subaru Forester XT that will become the daily driver. For more photos, click here:http://picasaweb.google.com/ReeseEngineering/Porsche951ForSale This would be an excellent car for someone to: Make into a street-legal track/race carMake into a trailer-only dedicated track/race carPaint it, add some TLC and make it back into the awesome street car it was when I bought it.Drive as-is and do some periodic maintenance History: I am the 4th owner of this car. All owners including myself are non-smokers. The 1st owner was a guy who bought the car from the Alan Johnson Inc. Porsche dealer in San Diego, CA. He simply drove it and had it regularly serviced. I still have the oil change and service paperwork, along with the original vehicle warranty contract listing the original 1988 purchase price of $44,820. I also have a copy of the original window sticker with all the options listed and the suggested retail price of $48,780. He was in the military and sold it when he was transferred. The 2nd owner was a Porsche mechanic in San Diego, CA. He added all the performance parts and did the engine work when the time came. The 3rd owner was a Neurosurgeon who had several Porsche vehicles and ued the San Diego mechanic to maintain them. He bought the car from the mechanic and added a few things before selling it to me when he was going through a divorce. I had the car shipped from Florida to California I took ownership of the car 12/2/1999 and it had 150043 miles on it. Since then it has been my daily driver and I still drive it around town. This car is FAST! Most people can’t believe it is only a 4 cylinder. It handles amazingly well due to its excellent weight balance and it stops better than most vehicles on the road due to the oversize tires, S4 brakes, and ABS. It has never left me stranded and is a good reliable car. Unfortunately I have never had a garage to put it in, and I drive it every day. The car’s current exterior condition is a result of that. It has never been in any accident of any kind, no fender benders, nada. I am a mechanical engineer and I own my own machine shop, so I do 99% of the work on my cars. Since I purchased this car I have stockpiled a ton of spare Porsche parts. I even parted-out a 944 non-turbo and used a bunch of parts from that “donor” car to maintain my 951s. I have kept the car well maintained as far as oil changes, air filter, belts, and replacement of anything else that happened to need repair. I currently have this car and one other very nice silver 1986 Turbo 944. This is a FACTORY “S” car. It came stock with the following options from Porsche: M030 - SPORT GROUP WITH KONI SHOCK ABSORBERSM220 - LOCKING DIFF 40 % !M288 - HEAD LIGHT WASHERSM383 - SPORT SEAT LEFT ELECTRIC AND VERTICAL ADJUSTABLEM387 - SPORT SEAT RIGHT ELECTRIC AND VERTICAL ADJUSTABLEM454 - CRUISE CONTROLM490 - HiFi SOUND SYSTEM (Upgraded several times now)M494 - ADDITIONAL AMPLIFIER (No longer in vehicle)M573 - AIR CONDITIONINGM593 - BOSCH ANTI LOCK - ABS SYSTEMM650 - REMOVEABLE SUN ROOFM946 - SEAT COVERS FRONT - LEATHER/LEATHER/LEATHERETTE The Turbo S package includes: forged wheels (long gone – existing wheels are BBS MODAs), koni adjustable suspension, S4 brakes, larger turbo, reinforced front strut towers, Limited Slip Differential, transmission cooler, ABS brakes, Rolled Fenders, Limited Edition Interior It is also one of the 1st production cars ever to come equipped with factory airbags. It also has the factory cruise control and it still works. The interior is a nice Tan color and it keeps the car from getting crazy hot in the sun like the black or rose colored interiors do. There are some aftermarket black leather coverings on the interior: The inside door handles have been covered as well as the center console. The inside door latch release levers have also been switched to black and they look good. The following items are on the car now and were added by previous owners: 968 Aero Mirrors - electrically position-able and heatedFUBA Beta Flex D roof antennaShort Throw Shift KitRacing Dynamics Motorsport Aluminum Front Strut Tower Brace Kit (not currently on the car)Turbo Cup Swaybars Front & RearPro Flow Mass Airflow with K&N Reusable Cone FilterBoth the Front and Rear Brake Rotors are Vented and CrossdrilledBursch Test Pipe, straight-through exhaust with no cat.(Car still legally passes smog emissions test as is)Upgraded ChipsetUpgraded Turbo Hot Housing from K26 to K27Larger Fuel Injectors: 55 LB/HrReplaced factory rubber brake lines with Stainless Steel flex front & rear Modifications I have made to the car: I added a very nice Aluminum Blow off valve to replace the stock plastic POSHella H4 headlampsAlpine single disk CD player (added by me when the previous stereo died)Factory Speakers and their locations:(1 tweeter and 1 midrange in each door, and 2 midrange in the rear seat area)Profile California Amplifier (added by me when the previous amp died)MTX Thunder speakers (installed by previous owner in spare tire well)8 speakers totalI installed a Uniden Bearcat BCT 7 in-dash preprogrammed warning scanner I removed the factory exhaust tip in order to install a 5” Supertrapp to keep the noise level down for a track day at Laguna Seca. I will include the factory tip. I will even weld it back on for you if need be. (if you are going to race this car, you may want the Supertrapp setup...) I built and installed an aluminum camera mount between the split rear seats in the back. It could be used as is, or returned to the original configuration. Engine The engine was rebuilt at 142,140 miles by the previous owner at “The Black Forest” Independent parts and service in San Diego, CA and included the following (as stated on the receipt): Remove & Replace head for Valve Job (Wide Fire Head Gasket)Resurface Head, Valve Job, Replace Belts & RollersRemove & Replace Oil PanReplace Rod Bearings & NutsReplace Piston Rings, Check Cyl Bores – (OK)Reseat Oil Filter Console The wheels are 17” MODA aluminum with a special “Carbon Fiber Look” overlay that is bonded to the aluminum. (Not just a sticker, it is actually permanently baked into the metal). It is a very durable finish and I have had many people ask if the wheels are real carbon fiber. The wheels came from a friend who used them as spare wheels when he went to the track. The bummer is that they only came with 3 of the 4 plastic MODA center caps. I could machine a 4th center cap from black plastic, but never got around to it. There is a set of high quality black aluminum Porsche Lug Nut wheel locks I purchased that come with this car (4 pieces plus the wrench key insert). The tires are BF Goodrich G-Force Sport. Front: 235/40 ZR17 Rear: 255/40 ZR17 Three of them have about 50% tread left. The driver front was replaced recently after a sidewall puncture and has 75% tread left. Things I can remember replacing or have receipts for: (listed in chronological order) 3/03 New Factory Porsche Water Pump All new Belts, New radiator & coolant hoses, Antifreeze, oil change. 10/08 Rear Hatch Struts Replaced driver front tire – sidewall puncture New brake pads (all), resurfaced all 4 rotors, bled brakes New Tires / BBS Moda Wheels Power Steering Pump Steering Rack (good used unit from non-turbo 944 donor car) New front swaybar bushings: Stock rubber ends, Teflon support bushings Rear wheel bearings, both sides 8/10 Front A-Arm Spherical Pivot Ball Joints - both sides Most Current Oil Change/Air Filter clean & re-oil Check Brake Pads & Brake Disks New Hood Struts 10/10 New gasket on valve cover Installed new (remanufactured) alternator & New Battery New Center Console Plastic Hinge What needs work: It needs new paint. The front half of the car was repainted just before I bought it. The entire car could use a new paint job at this point. There is one small rust spot on the driver door, other than that there is no rust anywhere else on the body. The interior is showing signs of the 225K on the Odometer. The driver seat has ripped at the top. The passenger seat is in decent condition. The electronic adjustments on both seats still work. The dash has developed quite a few cracks at the top windshield defrost vents. The gauge cluster also seems to have some very small crystallization developing inside on the matte black area between gauges. It does not affect the gauges, it is just there. The in-dash clock is damaged and does not work. (But it is solid and not cracked – it doesn’t look bad, it just doesn’t work.) The supports on the glove box are both broken, but the latch works fine and keeps it shut. The Electric Windows are slow, but functional. I recently replaced the driver side mechanism with a good used unit from the donor 944. There is damage to the tinting film on the windows, especially in the rear, and it would need to be re-tinted. The rear mat is there, but some of the snaps are broken and it sags in the rear where it should attach to the body just below the hatch glass. It is also worn out in places. The audio system works, but was much better when I bought the car. It had an Alpine Tape Deck with 6 disk changer, the factory speakers, a ZAPP amplifier, and the 2 MTX thunder subs. It really kicked. But the 6-disk changer died and I put in the current Alpine single CD head unit - still very good sound. 2 years later, the ZAPP amp died and I put in the current amp. It is not configured properly or needs a bigger (or another) amp. The stereo in this car used to blow people away. The windshield washer squirters have never worked since I owned the car. The pump is not connected to the hoses or missing entirely. I just use a squeegee when I gas-up. The car had an alarm system at one point. There is still a “Clifford” LED in the center console. But I never received the Key FOB and as far as I know it has never worked. It has never gone off, chirped, or blinked the lights. The Driver Rear Tail Light is cracked, but does work. Several of the driving/marker lamps are not working, but just need new bulbs. Heating and AC: In order to work, the AC system needs to be re-charged with R12 refrigerant (one thing I cannot do myself). Or it could be converted to R134a. I have had it re-charged about every 2 years with R12 and the system works great and blows cold air once it is charged. The Porsche repair place that did it for me last time (Schneider Autohaus SB, CA) put dye in the system but cannot find a leak. The system only holds 1-2 pounds of refrigerant, and that is not much. They told me that even a leak-free system that small could lose pressure over time – and it does. The climate control fan blower switch or control unit has an issue with the fan speed. Sometimes it works on all settings: low, medium, high. But typically it works on high speed only (basically fan full-on or fan off). Sunroof: The sunroof works as far as raise and lower, but it is not the best mechanism. You need to push the button and then have another person push down on the sunroof right as it is almost completely closed in order for it to seat all the way down. Once this became an issue, I didn’t use the sunroof. The front suspension makes a slight creaking noise at low speed when going over bumps. (For example, going over a speedbump in a parking lot.) It is related to the front swaybar because when I changed the bushings, I drove the car for a week or so with the swaybar off and there as no noise. Put it back on with all new bushings (hoping that would fix the noise) and the noise returned. So I have just accepted the noise and driven it as-is for the last few years. It could be that the shocks need to be rebuilt, I don’t know. The shocks seem to work fine. The turbo system works, but seemed to work better when I bought the car. It still provides decent boost (based on performance and the stock dashboard gauge), but the car used to be faster. I recently removed and checked the wastegate – it seems to be in good condition – opens at the correct pressure and seals closed properly. It could be that the turbo is getting old or something as simple as a few manifold leaks. This car is a 5-speed and the powerful 2.5 Liter engine is in good condition. I have disclosed everything I know about the vehicle and there are no known issues other than what I have discussed above. The car is sold as is and as with any 23 year old car, there could be other issues I haven't found or don't know about. I am not desperate to sell this car and I’m not looking to trade it for any other vehicles or items.
