Vehicle Detail
1923 Dodge Brothers Touring car, relatively new top and upholstery. Upgraded to modern coil and Pertronix electronic ignition to improve the road reliability of this excellent condition driver. This car has been driven in many Model T Club events and has recently been on tour to Clinton, Iowa from Elgin, Illinois on the ‘Flivvers to Fulton’ tour in the spring of 2010. This car is in original condition with the exception of the ignition system and modern spark plug wires, front bumper is from a 1924 Dodge Brothers car, the spot light is era correct, but not original equipment, and the top carriage supports were custom fabricated. Features include: · 4 cylinder, 35 horsepower engine (comparable Model T Ford had a much less powerful 20 HP 4 cylinder engine) · Three forward speeds plus reverse sliding gear transmission with clutch pedal, versus the two speed planetary transmission on the Model T Ford · All metal body with baked-on enamel, versus metal and wood in comparable Model T Ford. · Speedometer and oil pressure gauge were standard equipment on the Dodge Brothers models, and were not available for comparable Model T Ford cars. · Varnished oak wooden spokes · Convertible top boot to cover top when folded down This car sold for $895.00 dollars, FOB the Dodge Brothers plant, Hamtramack, MI in 1923. A comparable Ford Model T Touring car sold for $285.00 that same year, and accordingly the 1923 Dodge Brothers was considered an upscale luxury model for cars made in the U.S. at the time. The 1923 Dodge Brothers was nearly three feet longer than the Ford, 600 pounds heavier, and had a top speed of approximately 60 mph, versus the top speed of approximately 47 mph for the smaller, two speed Ford. The Dodge Brothers were former vendors of Henry Ford, and provided the engines and many other primary components of the drive train for Henry Ford up until 1913, when a falling out occurred regarding payments to the Dodge Bros. from Henry Ford, and a two year litigation followed. The Dodge Brothers ultimately prevailed in the litigation, and used the settlement funds to start production of Dodge Brothers own line of cars in 1915. Both John and Horace Dodge died within a year of each other in the early 1920’s, and their widows continued operation of the company and hired various experts in the industry to make the day to day decisions in keeping production going forward. The Dodge Brothers Car Company was purchased by Walter P. Chrysler in 1929, and he changed the name of the now Chrysler company division to simply ‘Dodge.’ Dodge has remained a brand line of Chrysler and is still in production to this day.
