Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a 1969 Volkswagen Type I Beetle with an automatic transmission (the "Automatic Stickshift") in good condition. I'm selling this car for my parents, although I owned the car at one time myself. The history of the car: I purchased this vehicle from a VW repair shop in Sacramento, California during the summer of 1993. The garage's owner had recently purchased it from its original owner, who had grown too old to drive it. At that time, with the exception of one fender replaced as a result of a "fender bender," the car was completely original. At some point it appears that someone attempted and overspray of a white paint over the original Toga White. I drove the car for three years and faithfully maintained it at Ulrich's in Berkeley, California until I was posted overseas. At that time, in 1996, I gave it to my parents to use, at 86,000 original miles. While I was abroad, my parents invested in the car. My father had the engine rebuilt by Roy Martin of Prescott, Arizona. The rebuilt engine, which runs well, now has 12,066 miles. The automatic transmission has always worked well, although it prefers Arizona's warmer days to its mountains' 0° in winter. I had new tires and new German running boards put on the vehicle three years ago. My parents have kept up with the regular maintenance at Beal's in Prescott, Arizona, including oil changes every 3000 miles and valve adjustments every 6000 miles. My father replaced the upholstery with original material replacements from W&M. However, the driver's side seat has worn, and my mom is still a smoker, so the ash tray is used. The fuel gauge float has come loose in the gasoline tank. The gauge will work but the float needs to be reattached. Someone rear-ended my mother at some point, which required replacement of the rear bumper and deck lid. We used German origin parts. There are some pieces missing here and there in the interior and some cosmetic faults. There's a small dent on the driver's side rear fender. The headliner is mostly good. This car is a good runner but it could stand for a more serious restoration. A good paint job and the replacement of some of the seals would go for a long way in improving the vehicle's look. It runs well. Although criticized widely, I always found the automatic stick shift kind of nice to use. It's a quite a responsive system, and although it cuts into acceleration, it is very easy to use. Comes with the original manual and all service records since 1993. Serious inquiries only. I can field questions about the car via e-mail through eBay's e-mail system. If you send your phone number by e-mail, I'll do my best to respond. Because they are older, I prefer not to disturb my parents directly, and it will be tricky to get more photos (as I live on the East Coast). However, should you wish to see the car in person, an appointment can be arranged. Should you purchase the car, I would receive from you a $500 non-refundable deposit the day of the sale with the remainder due via PayPal within three days. You may arrange shipping or pick it up; my parents cannot deliver it. An extra transaxle is included as part of the sale. The title is clear. The vehicle is sold as-is, where is, with no express or implied warranty. Thank you for your interest.
