Vehicle Detail

Thanks for looking at our eBay auction regarding our 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle convertible - commonly known around here as simply "BUG". I purchased this car in March 05 as a surprise birthday gift for my wife - her dream toy car at the time. The lady we purchased the car from in Cary, NC had owned the bug for the previous 10 years. She keep the car in good running order and serviced the car regularly - I have all receipts. NC title in hand. After a couple years of use and doing normal light mechanicals (new brakes, hoses, tune up, oil services, filters, couple new tires, new gas cap, etc) we decided to do a light cosmetic restoration. The car was repainted in Porsche Boxster yellow - the bug's original yelllow was faded. The paint job was slightly better than a Maaco job but certainly not show quality. All new bumpers and exterior trim were replaced. This included new headlight rings, turn signal tops, side mirrors, body moldings and emblems were all replaced. New floor pans were installed. New carpet kit installed. New front and rear door panels, new horn ring. The car was only driven lightly since in the last few years. You know the deal - a few weekends, used for one company Christmas card photo shoot, out for ice cream - etc - just enough to keep the battery up and all things functioning. The time has come to move on as other toys are here and this one needs a new owner who will continue to care for her and improve her as your go! We have $7,500 total investment in the car and feel like that we have enjoyed atleast $2,500 out of her over our time of ownership. Hence here we are on eBay with no reserve at $4,900. As of recent we have had the carb rebuilt, complete tune up, new battery, gas tank removed and cleaned, new fuel filter, air filter, etc.....the bug cranks instantly and runs fantastic! Now let me be very clear - this is a good basic driver example. It is miles away from being a show car. I like to call it a 10 footer. Please let's don't put ourselves through the agony of expecting to buy a 15k dollar restoration on eBay for $4,900 and then get here and find something different then you dreamed up in your mind. I don't think I could be any clearer but inevitably this always happens on affordable classic cars. In addtion we always get the question - can I drive the car 500 miles home?? I'm sure you could - but does that make a great deal of sense to put a 39 year old classic car on that kind of road trip? Point is transporters are cheap - if you are more than a small commute - maybe let's consider a transporter. Now I understand some need to see the car in person before buying - that's great - but if you are that person - you need to make those arrangements beforehand. This is not a bid it off and then come and look at it to decide. The tan skin of the softop has 2 tears - and yes if left outside it will leak. We keep the car inside and quite frankly the top is never up - we didn't see a need to replace it. The rear plastic window is in decent condition - again - why would you ever want the top up???!! The white tonneau cover looks great and is in good condition. The paint has chips and scratches - it was a middle of the road respray. The pedal box has some rust - the battery box has some rust. One of the rear windows is missing the handle and will not roll down - bad regulator I assume. Some of the rubber trim has been replaced - some is original and tired. The little things are cheap enough. The driver's seat is in a fixed position - it needs a slider so you can adjust it. It's in a comfortable position for us as it is. The odometer reads 36,xxx and is in working order. I would assume that's 136k miles but as with any 39 year old car it's sold mileage exempt. The heat exchangers have been replaced by a performance exhaust header - therefore the car has no heat. There is a small 2" tear or so at the top of the back seat. Now the good. You could not ask a 39 year old car to run or drive any better. For what the car gives up in cosmetic flaws it makes up in running and driving - not to mention the cool factor. We also own a late model Porsche 911 and a yellow Acura NSX - I think the bug draws more attention. The clutch and gearbox feel good. Engine cranks right up and runs smooth. The brake lights, turn signals, horn, headlights etc are all in working order. The radio works. The gauges on the dash are working. I don't think I can be any clearer with my description - but if you have any questions BEFORE bidding please do not hesitate to call - (919) 790-2235 Mon-Fri 10-6. On the weekends email is the best way to get me - I will respond in a timely matter. I have included 35 plus very descriptive high resolution pictures - please be patient for them to load. You need to ask any and all questions before placing a bid to purchase - that includes gettting the wife's permission (or husband's) to bid. This is a no reserve auction - the highest bidder is the new owner!! As with any 39 year old classic vehicle this buy is sold AS IS with no warranty written or implied - by bidding on this car you agree to these terms. If you do not agree - do not bid!
