Vehicle Detail
1958 Edsel Ranger 4 door hardtop, the rarest Edsel known by survival according to Edsel expert Phil Skinner. Original colors of Driftwood with a Charcoal Grey scallop. It has the original green cloth & vinyl interior and correct black rubber floor mats. (Edsel Rangers did not come with carpets) The colors may sound strange, but the Tan & Green are actually very distinctive and rare. It is already listed in Phil Skinner’s registry. It is straight and rust free. It had some repairs done to the left quarter panel probably 40 years ago by a body shop that is not up to today’s collector car standards. I assume that is also when they painted the scallop green. (the color it SHOULD have been from the factory) I have owned this car since 1996 slowly fixing things. It had been parked for 15+ years before I bought it. I have done a complete brake job (including all hoses, wheel & master cylinders and converted it from the troublesome Treadle-vac to reliable manual brakes). New, belts, hoses, Recored radiator, new single exhaust, cleaned out the gas tank. I rebuilt the transmission including (new torque converter) I installed new fuel pump, water pump and rebuilt the carb. (Motorcraft – no dumb Holley) I fixed the Dial-temp by removing the servo stripping all the dried up grease then freeing up and lubing all the cables. (not an easy job!) I pulled all four window regulators and freed them up cleaned, lubricated and adjusted them. (have you ever worked on 4 door hardtop rear doors? It is not for beginners) I removed the entire windshield wiper system and freed up the vacuum motor and all cables pulley etc. It works nice now. The windshield has one BB hit on passenger side the drivers door glass is cracked. All other glass is OK. I fixed the trunk hinges so it stands up by itself(!) It still has the original jack in the trunk. I put reproduction cowl drains in it. I qualified it for Historical Vehicle license plates and they are currently registered. I have been tinkering and fixing so many things over the last decade and a half I cant remember most of them. I rebuilt the transmission and the FE motor ran well, but had blow-by so in January of this year I had it rebuilt. (receipts included). I have not driven it since. It doesn’t have but 4 trips around the block maybe 2 hours of run time(?) I always planned to do the paint and upholstery but never got around to it. I wanted to wait until it was functional. The problem: I am now beginning a MAJOR remodel of my house. I have no more time or money for it and many of the repairs I did 10 years ago need to be done again. Example: the Teletouch is functional but is out of adjustment again. The Dial-Temp controls are sticky and need to be lubed again. I cant invest another decade in tinkering with it, and I never go to car meets anymore, so it has to go. It runs and drives BUT - Because it has been sitting more than operating so I do not advise driving it any distance. Tow it home and check it out before you do anything with it. As you can imagine I have probably 50% more cash invested in it than my opening bid, not to mention all the hours I spent on it. (I guess that’s why they call it a hobby?) It is a rare car and I would hope it goes to someone who appreciates the rarity of an original low priced 4 door hardtop. As part of the restoration plan I ordered the original green surf CLOTH and white VYNAL from SMS upholstery. I waited 6 months to get it. However by then I lost the opportunity to have it installed. This NOS correct material is available to the winning bidder (only) for an additional $350. Legal Text: Please ask any questions before you bid. Your bid is a contract to buy it at that price not an invitation to re-negotiate in my driveway. It is sold without ANY warranty. You buy it, it is yours. The car stays in my driveway until I have negotiable funds fully in my possession. I will work with the buyer to schedule shipping & loading, but I have big construction trucks coming within the next month and they need parking.
