I have owned this 2002 since 1991 when I purchased it from someone who drove the car across country, from California, when they were relocating to Pennsylvania. The car is absolutely rust free and has been extremely well taken care of. I was told the car originally was imported to California which makes sense as there was no salt/rust damage - part of why I jumped at the chance to buy back in 1990 Over the years I've added many performance upgrades but I have tried to keep within the lines of the original spirit of the design. It's really tough to improve on the look of the pre-1974 02's! The only flaws on the car are a small chip in the glass on the front windscreen (stone chip from driving but the glass is solid so I didn’t replace), a minor tear in the headliner by the right side driver’s sun visor and the straps are missing from the rear seat side panels. The paint is flawless. The trim is original so there are some surface marks here and there but nothing that detracts (all new mounting hardware was used to re-install the trim after the belt line was removed). In my opinion, the biggest selling point about this car is that it is completely rust free. Many owners will claim this but this one was mint from the start with no signs of rust when I originally purchased the car 19 years ago. A local factory trained mechanic (who specializes in vintage BMW’s and is a BMW CCA member) describes the car as ‘10’. He has seen a lot of 2002’s over the years (his father was one of the first importers, on the East Coast, of BMW’s back in the day) and feels this is one of the best examples out there. All the mechanical work over the years was performed in his shop using only OEM parts. The car is currently inspected and insured and has a classic license plate. There is plenty of power up front and the car handles beautifully – it is not a super ‘harsh’ ride even with all the performance upgrades on the suspension. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive this car across country. Mechanically it is a 10 out of 10 and the 5-speed conversion lets you cruise at 3,500 rpm at highway speeds. The reason I am selling the car is that I live in NYC and will not be able to garage the car here in the city (the car is currently garage kept in Pennsylvania and does not see rain or snow). I've probably left a few things out of the description but I do think this is a great deal for a vintage collector – and for someone who knows how rare a 2002 this is. The car is located in the Hershey, Pa area (zip code 17033). Hope this is of help and please feel free to send an email with any additional questions.
