Mercedes Benz launched the 230, 250 and 280SL series in 1963. The R113 as it was known internally, featured an overhead camshaft six-cylinder with mechanical fuel injection derived from Mercedes.. diesel technology. Suspension was independent with braking handled initially by front disc/rear drum, but by the time the big-engined 280SL was introduced, four wheel discs were fitted. While the new SL marked the end of the line for the legendary 300SL and the 190SL, it was less of a direct replacement for either outgoing model and more of combination of strong points that spawned a new direction for Mercedes-Benz sports touring cars. The more affordable 113 was roomy for two adults and their luggage, comfortable, reasonably quick and versatile thanks to it..s hardtop and soft top configuration and large trunk. The ..Pagoda.., as it became known (due to it..s subtle but stylish concave shaped hard top) was modern and thoroughly usable on a daily basis compared to the high-performance 300SL. The 113 SL became the perfect choice for those seeking a weekend motoring getaway for two. Being offered today is a 1969 280SL in green over black upholstery. This particular example features the most desirable combination of the large, 7-main bearing 2.8 liter engine and automatic transmission. It also has the powerful 4 wheel disc brakes and importantly; both tops. The body work and chassis are solid and free of rot. The paintwork is presentable and ideal for a driver, if not concours quality, as is the interior. This is a turn-key, well sorted 280SL in prime mechanical condition which is ready for use around town, touring back country roads or for that weekend getaway for two.
