Vehicle Detail
The right year, the right color, the right modifications and records going back to the 80's! This three owner car was originally sold at Webber Motors when it was in San Leandro California, spent the majority of its life in southern California and was brought east in 2003 by the current owner. The car has its original finish, still shines and shows well, with a few small dents and worn through to primer on the high points of the hood and trunk lid. There almost no rust on the car, a small perforation in the spare tire well, but otherwise none, ever. The dent on the drivers side of the hood happened during the earthquake in LA in the 90's and the other dent on the drivers side door was caused when the door check failed. I have never been tempted to repaint the car, its patina is a testament to the care it has received since it left the factory. Why buy a restored car and wonder what is lurking under the paint!? The engine was rebuilt 53k miles ago. Block was bored, high compression pistons 11-1, a new cylinder head to accommodate the piano top pistons, rebuilt K-fisch injection pump, mechanical timing chain tensioner and all new gaskets, seals, etc. Within the past 2000 miles; new valve seals, valve job, porting, polishing, schrick 292 cam, supersprint header and newer tii exhaust. A lot of thought went into this build, the common problem in modifying a tii is the limitations of the stock K-fish pump which results in a lean mixture above 3k rpm. With the higher flow early k-fish pump, long tubes on the supersprint header and dyno tuning, we have limited this potential problem. There is no torque curve on the dyno sheet, just a straight diagonal line, therefore if one were to strengthen the valve train and could safely raise the readline, there would be more power. As it is there is over 150hp. We compromised with the air fuel mixture, as stated above, with a large cam the tii often runs lean above 3800rpm, this one though better than others was slightly lean so we bumped the mixture up using the 'forbidden' screw and adjusted it running on the dyno. With this setup we have a rough idle when cool and sometimes over run when the car is shut down, but no worries about premature cylinder wear. There are eibach springs underneath, bilstein shocks, suspension techniques adjustable swaybars and period correct ats wheels with new sumitomo tires. The car handles and performs better than any other 2002 I have driven, having owned 8 of them over the past 20 years and having driven a number of others, it really says something about the time and money spent setting up this car. The interior is in great shape and there is a set of almost nos Scheel Mann sport seats from the 1970's, the dash was repaired back in the 90's and still looks great with one small crack about 1". The Grant steering wheel fits with the rest of the period appointments. Carpet is in good shape, rear seat has a tear at the base, which is not noticeable when installed in the car. I was intending on a rear seat delete and roll bar. Headlines is ok, one small tear about 1/2", could use a good cleaning but otherwise good. Center console is newer, with aux gauges installed but not hooked up. I will supply a wiring harness to the winning bidder. The huge lamps are rare bosch rally units, sourced from Germany. I am a lifelong devotee of BMW 2002's and this car is the culmination of years of searching, studying and building. It is an absolute blast to drive, has never let me down in my 7 years of stewardship and deserves to be in the hands of someone with a similar passion.
