Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is my 1969 Mercedes 280SE coupe with vinyl roof, in excellent condition. I bought the coupe as a personal project a few years ago, even though I build cars for a living, I never really got around to driving it. I had this sold a few months ago and my buyer never sent the deposit and just ignored my emails. A $1000 deposit via PayPal will be due immediately at auction close. If you placed your bid in advance and are not near a computer when the listing ends, then I will offer a 12 hour grace period for you to submit that deposit before moving on to the next highest bidders and leaving the appropriate feedback. Please keep in mind that this is an auction, not an opportunity to close in on a price, and then "view" the car. Conduct all of your research now because when the listing ends, the car is sold, no more questions will be answered and payment will be due immediately. Exterior The car was completely dismantled and sanded down to bare metal. I removed the doors, hood, trunk, complete interior, drive train, suspension, trim, wiring, chrome, glass and anything else that could get in the way of doing a factory original paint job. I looked up the original color dark gray, code (172 G) to this chassis and painted the car in it's original assembly line color. It has many coats of quality paint and is protected by many coats of quality clear so that it could be sanded and buffed as much as I desired over the years. The car is wearing the original steel wheels with factory correct painted hubcaps and new white wall tires. Completely refurbished and without flaws. All the exterior trim is in very good condition, and I replaced most of the rubber. The lights/lenses are all in excellent shape both functionally and cosmetically. The final point on this car and the only thing I haven't gotten around to redoing is the bumpers and some minor chrome trim. The photos give an honest depiction of the good condition they are in. INTERIOR When I acquired the car it still had the factory original interior in fair condition, so in that tradition, I had everything redone to original factory specifications. I used a 100% genuine leather interior with nearly no vinyl inserts anywhere. The seat rails and mechanisms were powder coated and professionally cleaned as well. The German carpet is obviously all new, as well the dash, door panels, seats and anything else I am leaving out. All of the wood you see in the photos, as well as the wood you don't, is all original to this car. I sent them out and had them redone to new condition. It cost me just under $3k to refurbish all of the wood but it is all new and completely without flaws. When I was reassembling the dash I had the original Becker stereo which obviously didn't work, but was in immaculate condition, so I decided to keep everything as original as possible by reinstalling it. I then took the car to a classic car stereo specialist who installed a premium Pioneer CD player in the glove compartment, discretely wired up an 6 channel 400 watt Alpine amplifier and Bazooka sub woofer in the trunk, and discretely installed new 6 speakers for a high end sound system that doesn't subtract from the quality restoration work I did. I also installed a key less entry system and alarm to fully update everything. As you can imagine, this cost me over $2k. All of the switches, interior lights, seat mechanisms, belts and windows are working perfectly. Drive Train/Suspension While the chassis was in the paint shop for 3 months, I had the drive train to redo. The engine was completely removed and rebuilt. I sent out as much metal for gloss black powder coating as I could, and every nut, bolt, and line was sent out for cadmium plating. Nothing was carried over. Every single component was either powder coated, cad plated, zinc plated, or brand new out of the box. The drive train and suspension is immaculate and worthy of show. Every single piece of rubber is new, new shocks, new brakes, every bushing, line, hose, clamp, nut, bolt, screw, bearing and anything else I am missing is all redone in gloss or flat black powder coating, gold cad plating, silver zinc plating, or came fresh out of the bag. And since I never drove the car, and never washed the engine/suspension the photos taken of the undercarriage can give you an idea of how close to new the whole thing is. Electrical When the car was sent to paint, I pulled in all of the wiring so that no paint and no damage would happen anywhere on the harness. As I reassembled everything, I used plenty of fresh, clean wiring, which I cut and organized to keep things neat the way I like them. As you can see, there are no extra wires or frayed ends anywhere on this car. The gauges were all sent out to a specialist who disassembled them, re-calibrated and cleaned them. They have been repainted and feature new lights. The heating and factory air conditioning systems are all refurbished and working to factory specifications. The sunroof glides open silently and doesn't leak a drop. This is a high quality ground up frame off restoration sure to impress anyone. This car cost me approximately $27k to build at my wholesale costs, not including my own labor, which was considerable. I estimate a retail consumer would have to spend at least double that to have this made. I used to build classic Mercedes Benz cars for a living for over 30 years and I built this cruiser to enjoy and take long trips up the coast with my wife. I never had any intention of selling it and it pains me to have it up here for pennies on the dollar, but the market for upscale classic cars has shrunken dramatically over the past year or so, and I am forced to sell. Please keep your emails respectful and serious and I will do my best to answer your question. A non-refundable deposit of $1,000 is required at the end of auction and the remaining balance by bank wire within 7 days of ending of auction. Buyer is responsible for shipping and pickup. The car is not European. The lights were converted. The engine was inspected and overhauled with new rod bearings, new piston rings, All standard, and a new cylinder head. I am a Mercedes mechanic with over 30 years experience. The paint job was done 3 years ago, the engine and suspension work was also done 3 years ago, the interior was done in 2009, the wood was redone in late 2009, the stereo and alarm was done in January 2010, the air condition was re-installed a month ago. Let me remind you that this is an auction. Yes, the car is available for a test drive for "bidders" with serious interest. You are welcome to inspect the car before you bid. Thanks, Patrick
