This is a 1972 Cadillac Eldorado Station Wagon which was custom built by American Sunroof Corporation. This was one of 3 cars built in 1972, and the only one of the 3 that used the full-size GM wagon rear section (the other 2 cars built by ASE used the intermediate wagon rear section with the lift gate). It was built very late in 1972, and actually has 1973 Eldorado quarter panels. This car has the power window that opens up into the roof, but no tailgate. This car was in California for the first few years of its life, then bought by a Doctor in Chicago that used it as a daily driver. This is a 57,000 original mile car that my father bought in 1985. This car is an eye-catcher, and could be taken to a show as is because of its uniqueness. However, to make a true showpiece out of it, there’s quite a bit of work that needs to be done EXTERIOR: This car is an older repaint, and it did not turn out well. My father had the car painted soon after he bought it, but the shop that painted it must have has equipment problems. The metallic in the paint is uneven and looks like it spattered out of the gun. After having the car torn down and returned with a bad job, we put it back together and left it alone. We had thought about having it repainted but never did it. The car is a good “20-footer”, but has the potential to be so much more. The overall body is in pretty good shape. The doors and fenders are rot-free, the rear quarters had minor rust by the fender skirts which was repaired. When the customizing was done there was a lot of filler used in the roof and upper quarters. This body work is intact and solid, but could use some improvement to be straighter. The undercarriage of the car is good, but exhibits typical surface rust from being used in Chicago winters. There is no rot-through under the car at all. The front bumper is very nice and fits a 57,000 mile car. The rear bumper was modified for the conversion and rechromed. The rechrome did not hold up well, and needs to be rechromed. INTERIOR: The seats are original (for the custom) and in good condition. The red velour is not ripped, but when we bought the car the rear glass was not tinted. The rear carpeting and upholstery was fading out from all of the sun. The top of the rear seat shows some fading, but is otherwise in good shape. The all carpeting in the car was replaced about 15 years ago, and side panels were dyed. All of the work held up well with the exception of the drivers side door, the panel could use another dye job. Otherwise, the interior looks good and is usable as-is. PLEASE NOTE: The rear seat is stationary, and does not fold down. Mechanically, this car is very sound and drives as a 57,000 mile car should. The tires are newer Kelly Springfields and are in good shape. The battery and starter were recently replaced. A couple of years back we dropped the gas tank and had it cleaned, installed new air shocks and brakes. There have been less than 1,000 miles on the car since the completion of this work. I rebuilt the air conditioning system about 5 years ago and it stopped working shortly after I had the work done. I was told the expansion valve needed to be replaced (again), but never did it. It did hold a charge for a couple of years, but I’m sure would need to be recharged by now. Overall, it’s a very unique car that is fun to drive. It’s a great attention getter, and even with its flaws gets plenty of compliments wherever I take it. It has the potential to be a very unique show car, but I don’t have the time to tackle the project. This car has most options offered for 1972 including 60/40 dual power seats, cruise control, tilt & telescopic steering wheel, power windows, power door locks, and sunroof.
