Launched in 1959 the Silver Cloud II became the first production Rolls-Royce to use a V8 engine. The all new 6230cc engine gave the Silver Cloud a 115mph top speed, as well as impressive acceleration times for such a large, heavy car. The engine could also be found in the new Bentley SII and Phantom V limousine. The Silver Cloud II was introduced in 1959. Little changed externally but it now had a 6.2 L V8 engine, which pushed the weight to 2.11 tonnes. Performance was greatly improved and top speed was raised to 183 km/h, but the main improvements were in acceleration and torque. Power steering became standard. Electrically operated windows were now available as an option The Motor magazine tested a Series II in 1960. They recorded a top speed of 104.7 mph (168.5 km/h), acceleration from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 10.9 seconds and a fuel consumption of 13 miles per imperial gallon (22 L/100 km/11 mpg-US). The test car cost £6092 including taxes. [2] Adoption of an all aluminium 6.23 litre V8 engine replacing the straight six of the Cloud I/S1 was the most remarkable innovation when Rolls-Royce publicized the advent of their new model Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II in 1959. It is well worth noting that this engine - developed during the 1950s - is still performing under the bonnet of Rolls-Royce's modern models of the 90s though having been subject to the company's established policy of seeking improvements in design and manufacture. In the U.S.A. the Silver Cloud II was tremendously successful and the slogan coined by David Ogilvy's advertising agency "At 60 mph the loudest noise in this new Rolls-Royce comes from the electric clock" became a classic of its own. As regards coachwork there were but negligible changes to the familiar Standard Steel bodywork when compared to that of the Silver Cloud I.
