Vehicle Detail

Thanks for looking at my number matching 1978 Dodge Monaco A38 police pursuit package car. This car was delivered new to Swift dodge in Sacramento, California on July 28, 1978. It was sold August 1, 1978 to the County of Alpine, California, where it served as a Lake Tahoe sub-sheriff's car. It was then auctioned and sold to Carson City, Nevada, and used by the school district, until again auctioned and sold to a local collector in the early 1980's. I purchased the car on September 1, 1997, and have owned it since. I have documentation from Swift Dodge. This is a unique automobile for multiple reasons. The A38 package cars were available only to government agencies, and only by a bid procedure. By 1978, they were really the wrong car for the era - brawny, thirsty, intimidating, truly fast, and ecologically incorrect. Consequently, they had little value and few were saved, much less protected and appreciated as the end of the line for the MOPAR big block 440 high performance engine in a B-body. I've read that as many as 300 may have been destroyed during production of the Dukes of Hazzard TV series. That this car remains an unrestored, mostly unpainted, never marked, never wrecked, never rusted survivor makes it unique. As a 30+ year old car, it isn't perfect. It certainly bears it's witness marks to the passage of time, but it has been stored indoors, protected and is in remarkable condition. The EW1 white paint is still shiny, the dash pad is still supple, the rubber floor mat is intact as is the original upholstery and rear package shelf. Mechanically, the E86, U code 440 HP runs great. I drive the car bi-weekly if the weather is dry, and have never even replaced the plugs. It has a non-lock up 727 Torqueflite transmission [cop cars didn't get the new lock up converter version of the 727], 9&1/4" 3.21:1 rear, heavy duty 100 amp alternator, front and rear sway bars, max cooling [radiator, fan, trans. cooler, engine oil cooler, power steering cooler, spark plug heat shields, additional floor insulation], police firmer feel steering box, vented wheels and hub caps, dual exhaust with triple factory catalytic converters with hear shields intact, remote trunk lock, and factory roof antenna wiring. 440 HP A38 cars in California received a non-lean burn N95 code emissions package. The original treadmill test sticker is still on the left rear window. It has working air conditioning. The only change from stock is the addition of a MOPAR Performance ignition system, and a rejetted NOS 1978 Carter Thermoquad. What does the car need? The tires are probably 10 years old, but look to be in great shape, and are smooth and round. If the car sits a month in cold weather, it takes a few seconds to engage reverse. If I shift into drive first, it's fine. Once driving, it will incinerate the tires, and shifts up clean and fast, downshifts right now. It has done this since I've owned it. The AC has never been converted to R134A. What it really needs is someone with a law enforcement tradition, or a MOPAR fan who is interested in it's continuing preservation. That said, it still runs like a banshee. Please inspect the car before bdding. It is truly remarkable for a 32 year old car that saw mixed public service, but it is an old, unrestored car, so I won't make any promises. It comes with no warranty expressed or implied. Buyer will have 24 hours to deposit $500.00 through PayPal, payment in full in cash due within 7 days of sale, unless other arrangements are made prior to the auction ending. Please contact me through Ebay for any additional information or pictures you need. The car sells to the continental U.S. only. I prefer to have the car picked up here. I have no experience shipping cars.
