1981 TOYOTA STARLET A RARE SURVIVOR! Great MPG. Runs Like a Top! This 1981 Toyota Starlet was purchased new by an older couple who towed it behind their RV from Ohio to Florida and throughout the South nearly every winter. It has 128,912 miles -- the vast majority of them recorded on the odometer as it was being towed behind their motorhome year in and year out for nearly two decades. The car fearures a 78.7 cubic inch (1290 cc) fuel-efficient four cylinder motor that starts up and runs like a top! It has an easy-to-operate manual, 5-speed transmission. Free of frills, its only luxury option -- aside from attaining a phenomenally economical 45-48 miles per gallon -- is power brakes. It does sport an after-market AM/FM stereo radio. The body is essentially rust-free, with only a few areas of bubbling visible. Years ago it had been involved in a parking lot bump-and-run incident that slightly damaged its right rear quarter panel, immediately repaired but now just beginning to show through its all-original bright yellow paint. It was purchased by its current owner in 2006. A dear friend of mine, and a recently retired certified master mechanic, he used it to drive to and from work, happily satisfied with its unmatched fuel economy and reliability. In an era of inexpensive gasoline, their fuel economy was spurned by most car buyers. Imagine! A 1981 car that can reach almost 50 pmg on the highway -- with a carburetor! But it's true. This rare four-passenger, rear-wheel drive compact, with its rear hatch and fold-down rear seat for added storage, is not perfect -- but it's as close as you'll ever find for its year. There are minor tears in the seat bottoms of both front bucket seats. But it is truly and honestly a well-maintained essentially original "survivor" that is a joy to drive and it will run day and night and only "sip" fuel!
