1973 Mercury Cougar Mileage 85200 + - Color: Ginger (Brown) Interior: Tan / Brown 351 Cleveland 2bbl carb, Ford 9" Rear Cick on Images to enlarge Jim 401-523-7646 Vehicle description includes what I was told by the last owner and my own experience. The original owner bought this the same year she retired. The original owner was a snowbird, lived in Florida during the winter, so the car spent winters in garage storage. When the original owner passed away her grandson got the car and kept it in storage, only driving it about 2000 miles in 10 years. The last owner had it about 2 years, and put an additional 2000 miles on it, and kept it in a garage. I bought it in April 2006. At that time it had about 63,000 miles on it. I did not have a garage so it has been outside. At times I had a car cover on it and a roof over it. I never drove it in the snow. It was parked in the fall and then began driving again in late spring after all the salt had been washed off the roads from the rains. Original vinyl top in is in fair condition. Faded but no cracks. Has bumps under the vinyl which indicates rust is under the vinyl. This is common with cars that have vinyl tops. At some point you may want to replace the top and remove / repair what rust is underneath. You can use your favorite vinyl restorer or protectant on it. Original AM radio. Speaker needs replacement or reconing. Of course you can upgrade to AM / FM or even a modern sound system. The antenna needs to be replaced. The antennae mast got snapped off in a car wash. Driver seat has some seams that came apart as can be seen in photos. Latch for the driver seat to enable it to fold forward to get into the back seat is stuck and needs adjustment or repair. Passenger side front seat appears ok. Back seat has a cut in the fabric on the passenger side of the seat bottom. Dash pad has cracks. Dash covers are available. I have seen dash pads on ebay stating other mid 1970's cars such as a Torino use the same dash pad. There are dashpad repair service companies that might be able to fix it. The steering is nice I recently removed a steering wheel wheel cover I believe was added by the original owner. Drivers door panel has some cracks and warping that might be able to be repaired. Both sides of door panels and interior panels have some fading at the top of them. Tires: Original wheels and hub caps. Front tires do not match. Starts and runs good. I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter a few years ago. The owner before me replaced the heater core, installed a new brake master cylinder, new front brake rotors and pads. New Napa gas shocks. so all these items have about 25,000 miles on them. A Petronix electronic ignition was installed. He installed it so that it would be hard to tell the ignition was not original without removing the distributor cap. He also had the single exhaust converted to dual exhaust using the original Y pipe. He wanted to keep the car as original as possible and had the exhaust shop use only original holes and attachment points for the exhaust hangers. I think one muffler has a loose baffle inside as it makes a rattle noise at idle and off idle. At times I would get a brake vibration when slowing down from high speed, possibly from a warped brake rotor. I don't believe the engine has ever been apart. With the age and mileage on the car a timing chain and gears replacement would be a good idea. Currently not inspected. The turn signals stopped working and I am not sure why. Could be a fuse, the flasher under the dash,or the sequential unit in the trunk. Original trunk mat, spare tire cover, and jack. The spare appears to be an original tire that is worn out. Body in good shape - Very little rust. The paint is 75% original. I was told it was hit in the rear in the 1970's. The paint match isn't the best and in some lighting conditions it is very noticeable. Other times you don't really notice it. It was painted from about the rear of the rear wheel arches on back. You may want to repaint the rear quarters or leave them as is. Touch up the car and keep as original as possible or repaint the whole car. The choice will be yours. The car originally had the side protection molding strips. The original owner did not like them so had them removed and replaced with the stripes that you see. The front area below the hood and behind the bumper was painted a semi gloss or flat black when the car was still fairly new because the original owner wanted it that way. The panel behind the front bumper has some rust bubbles on the driver's side. There is a small rust ole inside the driver's side rear wheel well at the bottom just behind the tire. Has some surface rust under the car, inside the trunk, and other areas. Use your favorite rust converter or method to treat these. Various scratches and dings. Rear valance is dented from prior owner backing into something. Bottom of passenger side front fender and chrome has a dent from a misplaced floor jack. Rear bumper has some rust spots. Trunk lid has some noticeable paint flaking which I believe is from old body work. Please note the car does not have Air Conditioning. It never did. That was an option. There are companies that sell kits to install AC and you can even find listings for kits on ebay. This car is 36 years old. Please expect a certain amount of wear, use, and flaws, as is standard on ANY used car. All used cars including this one may have dings, nicks, chips, scratches and any other marks that are associated with use consistent with age and mileage of the vehicle.
