Vehicle Detail

"Show Winner" for Sale Vehicle Description Professionally built in 1991, and titled as 1966 Ford Cobra in MA (emissions testing exempt), this striking Classic Roadster has it all … aggressive styling, track-inspired performance, menacing growl, and the fit, finish and craftsmanship you’d expect from a multi-show winner. This is a spectacular car on practically every level. I purchased 3 years ago, but problems with my eyes are forcing me to sale this beauty. The previous owner purchased the car in 2000 from a Ferrari dealer (2nd owner and personal friend of the builder) after nearly two years of researching, reviewing and test driving different kits from all of across the country. As you’ll discover through the same process, there are a lot of marginally built ones out there. Rest assured this car is not among them. Every aspect of this car screams quality. Mechanically and aesthetically, it has all the right things in all the right places. Despite its power and performance, the car has never been raced, or driven aggressively. In fact, it has never seen rain. It’s been a pampered treasure since the day I bought it. It’s garaged year-round, washed, polished and waxed weekly, tuned annually, and is only driven seasonally on spring and summer weekends to and from car shows, where it has won several awards for Best of Show and Best in Class. The car is in great mechanical and physical condition and is certain to meet the requirements of even the most discriminating buyer. Features (some provided by original fabricator) Body Construction and Paint The body is a combination of hand laid and chopper gunned fiberglass providing strong structural integrity, symmetrical fit and snugness along door, hood, and trunk lines, and free of any paint distortion. Although many manufacturers cut corners on body construction, Classic includes heavy-duty steel side guard beams, turned back edges at the fender well for increased strength, rear fender rock guards, front and rear fender liners, laminated inner liners under the hood and trunk, along with laser cut and jig-welded hood and trunk hinges. The paint job is one of many and most unique features of the car and the second most often asked question by people who see it. The first question is always “how much does it cost?”. It has four coats of high quality Black Cherry metallic (Cadillac) paint from German manufacturer, Sikkens. It’s complimented and highlighted by twin gold ‘flip flop’ stripes. The color combination is perfect. Six coats of clear coat protect the finish and provide a “wet look” finish that really brings out the deep, rich, color. The unique feature of this paint color is it has a tendency to take on a slightly different appearance depending on the sun and viewing angle. It can seem black, blood red, black cherry, plum, burgundy, and even deep crimson. From every angle however, the paint is beautiful to the eye and to the touch. It feels like glass and shines to a showroom finish with very little effort. Chassis and Underbody This Cobra’s striking good looks are matched only by its superior ride and handling. The body has been mounted on a 94.5” steel ladder-type powder coated frame with 2” x 4” mandrel-bent main rails, 1” x 3” outriggers, a heavy steel cowl support arch, and tested to over 600 horsepower! This one was built to last, but weighs in at less than 2400 lbs. It has front and rear sway bars for increased stabilization and control, power rack and pinion steering, independent suspension, a Mustang II front end with power disc brakes, a Ford 9” rear end, Pro-Shock SM500CR chrome plated shocks, and a new T5 Tremec manual transmission with an 11” Ford heavy duty center through clutch. All of this sits on four fat like-new BF Goodrich TA’s (P235/60R15’s in the front and P255/60R15’s in the rear) with 15’ Halibrand wheels. New front wheel bearing, track rod ends with laser front end alignment. The car handles and feels like it's on rails. Accessories and Trim Package The polish, fit and finish on this 66 is excellent. I’ve had some car enthusiast suggests it’s the cleanest Cobra they’ve seen, both in terms of how it was built and how it’s been kept. The exterior package is complete with every trim feature imaginable, including twin chrome side exhausts with detachable stainless steel heat shield, a chrome-plated brass windshield with safety glass, clear side wind wings, smoked Plexiglas sun visors, fender-mounted bullet style chrome mirrors, and a chrome three-point roll bar. In addition, it has the LeMans-styled flip-up chrome gas cap, twin 115 dB German Hella horns, front and rear chrome plated heavy-duty bumper mounts, and the most complete exterior lighting package including sealed, hi-low beam headlights sporting chrome bevels and wire mess debris screens, front and rear turn signals, left and right running lights, and rear reverse warning lights. Every inch of this car exudes the quality, craftsmanship and attention to detail you would expect from a professionally built custom. Power and Performance Beauty and aesthetics aside, these cars are built to run, and this one is no exception. Although I’ve never had it above 90 mph (only for a split second to sense the thrill and to impress the wife), I’m certain I wasn’t even close to testing the upper range at that speed. The car is powered by a balanced and blueprinted Ford 302 V8 tweaked and tested at more than 320hp. All of the highest quality parts were used including forged pistons, a 280 competition cam, remote oil filter, electric cooling fan, heavy duty Griffin Super II cross flow aluminum race radiator with copper pipes, a new Holley carburetor and fuel pump, new distributor, new spark plugs and wires, stainless braided hoses, aluminum Cobra valves and air cleaner, and fiberglass head wrappers. The engine compartment is as clean and highly detailed as the rest of car and the motor mounted position allows for easy access to key maintenance areas. The car is a fast car but an excellent driver round town and has what many think is the ideal balance or ratio of power to weight. It provides high torque at low rpm’s (read, excellent acceleration), strong top end speed, and at every blip of the throttle creates an auditory event that rivals the sounds you’d hear at a Nextel Cup track event. Interior Features and Detail A well-appointed interior that uniquely combines contemporary conveniences and driving comfort with period correct features and detailed craftsmanship. The electric-powered door openings in this Classic are larger than most by more than six inches, and because the seats are recessed into the frame, you get four more inches of headroom and five more inches of leg room. Although I’m 5’ 11” and fit quite comfortably in the cab, it can easily accommodate a larger driver. The driving comfort is enhanced by authentic sheep skin covers that protect the tan leather buckets underneath. The driver side cover is beginning to show slight wear on the upper right corner of the seat back where I place my hand to support my entry into the car. The hand-crafted leather is appointed throughout the interior and covers both the door panels (including map pockets) and the dashboard (including the glove box). The entire car is fully carpeted including the kick panels, boot area, floor and firewall, and trunk area. The only carpet area showing wear is deep inside the drivers foot area under the accelerator pedal. Centering the dashboard and serving as the signature highlight of the interior is a custom hand crafted ¼ inch wood grain “cobra” overlay. The dashboard incorporates a full set of VDO gauges, including a 160 mph speedometer, tachometer, water temperature, oil pressure, fuel gauge, hi-beam, engine on and neutral indicator lights, and a full compliment of paddle style switches, fan, electric antenna and interior lights. Other interior features also include a dashboard mounted rear view mirror, anodized aluminum accelerator, clutch and break foot pedals, chrome, mounted chrome sodium bicarbonate fire extinguisher, twin dual action cigarette lighter/ map lights, a heating and defrosting system, two-speed operation windshield wipers, quality mahogany AC steering wheel with GM tilt column, and a custom installed Alpine CDA 7873 CD Receiver with detachable faceplate and four door and rear mounted Pioneer speakers. The heater has been disconnected. The successful bidder will also receive a matching-color heavy duty vinyl tonneau cover with center zipper and roll bar sleeve providing full cockpit coverage (see truck photo), a flannel-lined poly cotton car cover with elastic bottom, a collection of Cobra enthusiasts and history books, and number of trophy’s from various car shows and competitions, and a small paint touch up kit. This is a special 66 Cobra 427. It’s been meticulously cared for and professionally maintained throughout my ownership. It’s as tight a driver as the day it arrived in my driveway. The car is a sight to see, a thrill to drive, and an absolute treasure to own, it’s sad I’m forced to sell her..
