Vehicle Detail
CAR HISTORY: I purchased the car 10 years ago from the original owner in New Jersey. There was no drivetrain. There was no interior. The owner drove the car for 20 years, put 156K miles on it, maintained it well and decided to turn the car into a racer. He installed new Bilstein racing shocks and new Eibach springs. He also installed the Zender rear spoiler, the aftermarket sunroof, removed the entire metal waist moulding and filled all the holes. He also had the shock towers repaired professionally (see pictures). The body was straight and never in any major accidents. There were some minor rust spots yet the normal weak areas of a northeastern car were very good. The driver side front frame rail had some rust but repairable. He also had the custom front bumper made for weight reduction. He painted the body Chamonix white from the original Sahara tan. He then lost interest and this is where I obtained the car. MECHANICALS: I installed the drivetrain from a restored 73 ‘02 totalled rollover car which I had previously acquired. The motor from this car was a 1975 (e12 head) which was completely rebuilt, bored and balanced, new cam and the previous owner invested over $4000 in the motor alone. The transmission (rebuilt) was solid with no synchro issues, the driveshaft was rebuilt and the ANSA exhaust system was brand new. Also a 2002Tii exhaust manifold was installed. The clutch was new also. The carb is a Weber 32/36 DGV with manual choke and K&N air filter. This motor runs extremely strong, idles smoothly at 500 RPM and can take much more carburetion than in currently on the car. I installed new brakes front and rear with cross drilled rotors and new brake hoses. Two weeks ago I installed factory rebuilt front brake calipers. The only part of the drivetrain that is original is rear differential. It is still working fine however an additional differential is included in the sale. The car comes with two sets of wheels and tires One set are performance Sumitomo 195/60-13 with BBS style OE equipment 320is wheels 13x6. The tread is very sound with some cracking on the tires. The other set of street tires and wheels are 175/70-13 tires with 320i fanjet alloys 5 1/2x13. These tires are virtually new. Both sets are pictured on the car. EXTERIOR: The paint is very good with some minor dings. The front grilles are later '02 model plastic grilles painted silver with the matching kidney grille. Headlights are Hella H-4 element style. The rear bumper is a '71 '02 short sided bumper painted silver along with rear trim and tailight rims. I Installed a new front windshield and replaced all the other glass. I also installed pressure sensitive adhesive backed black moulding to replace the waist moulding. All side marker lights and reflectors were removed and holes were filled to simulate the look of the older 2002. INTERIOR: I Installed new black carpeting and all the original black interior panels which are in excellent condition. I also installed original equipment BMW Recaro seats from an 83 320is. They are also in excellent condition and mounted on the 2002 seat tracks. The rear seat (both parts) is in very good condition with the original horsehair padding still instact. Headliner is solid with no rips along with sunvisors. The dash pad is a one piece unit from a 74 ‘02. It has a few cracks but is very serviceable. The original ‘bus’ steering is in excellent condition with a leather cover. All gauges operate. The speedo and odometer are working. The mileage is not correct as this is a replaced gauge. The console is in good condition with an older Pioneer cassette stereo in operation. BODY CONDITION: The major 2002 issues have been addressed. The minor body rust spots were welded with steel, filled and finished. The frame rail is strengthened. The shock towers are repaired correctly. The spare tire well is solid(picture). The body is straight. The front directional areas are solid. Rocker panels are good. Wheel arches are good. Rear suspension mounts are good. Wheel wells are solid. Floors are solid. ISSUES that can be of concern: The front left frame rail has metal welded to strengthen it. (picture) There is some minor rust which came through on the driver door bottom (pictures). There is a slight crease at the front of the driver door. There are some dash cracks Paint is very good with some flaws (hood chip and gas cap area)Non original sunroof If any of these issues bother you, please do not bid on this car! This is not a stock automobile. If you are looking for a 2002 for investment quality, this car is NOT for you. It was put back together from parts of various year 2002’s to be driven on the street. I have put only about 3000 miles since the reassembly eight years ago. It is a very solid car. It corners incredibly due to the stiff suspension. It rides surprising smooth and not harsh as you would think from the suspension. The engine is so strong and breathes nicely with the the throatly ANSA exhaust and Tii manifold!! This is the part of selling a car on Ebay that does not get justice, hearing it run!! This car would make a great autocrossing car or racer as it is already prepped to due so. It is fine as a street driver. It has been garaged since I moved to Vermont 7 years ago and has never been out in harsh winter weather here. It has a clear New Jersey title in my name. I welcome all questions as to the work I have performed on this car. I have driven 2002’s since 1974 and have owned 22 of them! It is one of my favorites. I simply do not have time for it anymore. Much time (and $) have been invested in this car. It has the upgrades to make it a better car than stock with all the reliability of a 2002! The car is currently registered in Vermont and driven every weekend. The reserve is modest and reasonable for what is invested. There are no warranties implied and car is sold "as is". $500 non-refundable deposit is required at end of the auction from the serious bidder. Anyone who is serious about purchasing this car should send me an email through Ebay. I will then send you my phone number and we can discuss the car, any questions and your intent on purchasing this vehicle. I have the right to cancel any bids over the reserve price from Ebay members with less than 5 positive feedbacks unless we have been in contact.
