Vehicle Detail
So, here is a really nice ’72 Chevy C20 that I have restored. I am being transferred back east, and unfortunately with my new digs being ‘snow-country’ I don’t want to bring this great truck back there with me. To give you some background, I purchased the truck from Daniel Schram who is a young Sheriffs Deputy here in Grants Pass, Or. – the truck was his Grandpa’s and when I met with him to test drive it, he recounted fondly how that for as long as he could remember, he had taken that truck with his grandpa, fishing and camping here in Southern Oregon. When his grandpa passed away he got the truck, and in about ’99 put a new 350 Crate engine, rebuilt the 350 transmission, and put a set of headers and new exhaust system on (it sounds very healthy – ha!). According to Daniel, the new power train has about 42-45,000 miles since new. Initially, I rebuilt the 2bl. Rochester, tuned it up and took the truck up to Eugene for a weekend, which is about a 400 mile run and the truck got about 14 mpg over that trip and while I had planned to put a 750cfm on and punch it up a little - the mileage was nice and the performance was just fine, so I passed on making the change in carburetion. I also rebuilt the Alternator at that time, not because it was not working, it’s mount had just become so worn, it just wobbled at low-rpms and thought it better to change out. I bought this truck with the intention of making a nice driver that would still allow me to actually do a project or two with a really nice truck, without banging it up. I like the fact it is a ¾ ton and liked the fact that its Diamond-plate bed cap ‘Linex’ spay-in bed liner would allow me to do that without worrying about using it. I am listing this today – but tomorrow I am having the Extang ‘Revolution’ tonneau-cover installed as well. This is a great low-profile tonneau that allows you to open it up easily for loads, or pull it shut for a nice clean look. ( see this at: http://www.extang.com/docs/revolution.html ). I have a couple of ‘before’ pics and you can see it was a little rough, but was a solid truck with a recent power train rebuild. I started it’s restoration with rebuilding the front end (typical of a 40+ year old truck…), this included bushings, wheel bearings, seals, pitman, control arms and idlers. Installed new disc-brake rotors and pads (discs in front-loved that…!), alignment and then drums and pads in the rear. I chose a nice set of 18”x8”American Racing wheels and topped them with a great set of Toyo Open Country’s – had them ‘load-balanced’ and ‘siped’ which greatly improves traction and even-wear. The front-end work, brakes and wheels/tires were all done with Les Schwab and come with all of the new warranties – they are a great service organization here in the Northwest. Next I did the body and paint. It originally had a body molding strip down the side of the truck, and when it was pealed off to prep for the paint, each mounting hole, had rust that had penetrated each opening, so these were leaded in and required the body to be sanded down metal, prepped with rust inhibitor and primed and sanded (you can see some of the prep-shots in the photos. I chose to paint the body two-tone red and white, but brought the red down the body to where the ‘lower’ molding option for that year would go. But after the drama with the other molding, I never mounted a lower molding (not want to repeat that trouble) and chose instead to just mark the changes in color with a fine-line pin stripe. You may want to add that molding, your choice – ha! I think it would look great, but need to be back east by May 1, so I’m kind of out of time on that. Finally, I pulled the original bench out, installed a complete carpet-kit (including the rear tank-carpet set…) and put in the ‘’Deluxe” bucket-seats and center console that were also the option for that '72. Nothing is more frustrating in a truck than a bench in my book, because anything you carry, or if you’d like to bring a soda or coffee along for the ride – the middle of the bench seat is not much of an option. I love the way this turned out. I painted out the interior, new dash pad and chrome accent pieces. The truck has a nice AM/FM/CD player with two 6x9 speakers. I have a new dash with white face-plates on the gauges with include speedo, tach, fuel-guage, battery, temp, oil-pressure and a quartz-clock! If I get my reserve, I will include this dash! I was going to just have the local GM dealer install this for me, as I believe there will need to be some additions to the harness for tach, etc. (you can see this in the pictures). I redid a set of buckets I found, and had them reupholstered with the ‘hounds-tooth’ patterned center panels – I also had a set of arm-rests done to match (these are in the pics with the dash…)! I am putting the door-panels and these armrests on today (will have pics tomorrow of these…) and tomorrow the tonneau is being installed by the dealer – so you’ll see all of these by Wednesday. today, I am also replacing the lower door-hinge on the driver’s side, as this was sagging a bit, so I will get this installed today as well. I have binged a couple of spots on the new paint in putting the interior in, and in getting the new door window-rubber in. I nicked the edges a bit on the driver-side window-sill and the threshold has a small nick as well. I have match-paint from the paint job and these spots can be sanded and sprayed with a small mix easily enough. But I think you’ll agree this turned out really nice, new paint, new interior, new wheels and tires, new rear bumber, all new lenses (front ambers, marker-lamps, and rear stop and back-ups…) – it really looks great and will be a great truck for someone! These are going for $19-20k in this shape and I am looking for much less than that. I will do a 'buy-it now' for the right offer as well, so let me know what you’re thinking… The truck is sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS, with no warranty expressed or implied. Financial and legal liability/responsibility passes to the new owner upon completion of sale. I would like to have this vehicle paid for by the 30th of the month.
