Wheelbase: 94.5 in. Produced over a nine-year period from 1982–1991, the Porsche 944 proved to be one of the most successful models in the marque’s...illustrious history. The replacement for the 924, the 944 offered a handful of improvements in terms of performance and creature comforts over its predecessor. With a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution, the car proved to be a competent entry-level GT that was just as exciting to drive as it was to live with on a daily basis. The 944 Turbo was launched in January of 1985 and at that time, it was the top-of-the-line model in the 944 family. The car’s 2.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine produced 220 horsepower. Changes included a new front apron to help aid aerodynamics and included integrated fog lights. The gearbox was strengthened, 16-inch wheels were made standard, and the car was fitted with a slightly stiffer suspension. One of the most exciting front-engined Porsches to drive and enjoy, the 944 Turbo is often overlooked by enthusiasts when compared to other similar models. Nevertheless, it remains a fun and very dependable car to drive, and makes for a compelling alternative to a BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or Corvette of the same era.
