I am offering for sale my 1971 BMW R50/5 with 9090 miles. This was barn find purchased from Kansas City, Kansas approximately 14 years ago. The bike was disassembled in 2014 and a partial restoration begun. All body work was removed and repainted black with hand painted white pin stripes on the tank and fenders. The bike was stripped down to the frame and the frame cleaned. The decision was made to not repaint the frame. Front end was stripped down , inspected and rebuilt where needed. All aluminum pieces (engine, transmission, rear end and fork tubes)were bead blasted with walnut hulls for clean up. Rear end and drive shaft were inspected and any repairs needed were made. Clutch and transmission inspected with installation of a new clutch disc. The wheels were broken down and rims polished. New VA Kleebblatt stainless steel spokes and nipples were used to rebuild the wheels. They were then shod with new tubes and Continental Twins Classic tires. A new wiring harness was installed front to back. The head light shell was re-built and modified ignition key installed. (10 penny nail does not work now) A toaster Tan top braces was used along with NOS Hella bar-end turn-signals and headlamp mirrors. New Seat was purchased from BMW . New rubber fork boots and clamps along with a new center stand and Brown side stand. Gary Sanford(Nolensville) was responsible for the mechanical renovation. The bike has new exhaust pipes and mufflers. Once the engine was replaced he removed the heads to inspect and told me the top end had less than 10 K miles on it and that the odometer was probably correct. Gary Woods of Nolensville performed the excellent paint work. This is probably the smoothest BMW I have ever had the privilege to own and I have owned a few since 1974. Bike is available for inspection. Located in the basement of my dental office. Bike is advertised locally and auction may end early due to local sale.
