Like its A5 sibling, the 2012 Audi S5 is available in coupe or in convertible form. The main difference is what’s under the hood. As opposed to the 211-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder powering the A5, the S5 coupe is motivated by a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V-8 that produces 354 hp. Audi uses a different engine under the hood of the S5 convertible — a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 333 hp. While not quite in the same horsepower field as the C63 AMG or the BMW M3, the S5 does serve as a worthy alternative to the C350 and the BMW 335i coupes.The S5 is available in Premium Plus or Prestige trim and both come standard with quad exhaust tailpipes, S5 sport suspension, quattro all-wheel drive, LED taillights and daytime running lights, and leather seats. Last year, the S5 Premium Plus model received an auto-dimming mirror and compass as standard equipment. Also, both the Premium Plus and Prestige models equipped with navigation received HD radio. The S5 coupe Prestige received rear parking sensors and a backup camera, while a power rear sunshade and Audi’s side assist became available as stand-alone options. Next year, we expect the S5 will feature refreshed exterior styling.The casual car shopper may easily overlook the differences between the A5 and the S5, but they do exist. Audi favors subtlety with the design of the S5. The biggest differences occur in the rear, which includes quad exhaust tailpipes, an integrated decklid spoiler, and S5 badging. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is the only transmission choice for the V-6 and its 0-60 mph time is a little over five seconds. The S5’s sport-tuned suspension makes road imperfections and bumps noticeable but not intrusive. An optional torque vectoring rear differential is beneficial and a must have item for canyon carving.The S5 cabriolet comes standard with roll bars that automatically deploy in the event of a rollover. Both the coupe and the cabriolet come standard with four airbags for front and side protection; the coupe has additional airbags for side curtain protection. Also standard on both models is four-wheel anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and a LATCH system.
