Vehicle Detail
1967 Camaro Convertible History September 1966 this Camaro was special ordered by Mr. Vega from Warren Biggs Chevrolet in Southern California. The dealer invoice states that Mr. Vega traded in a 1963 MG Roadster on the purchase of this new 1967 Convertible Camaro. The State of California issued the original “Black Plates” license plate ULS 062 on March 2, 1967 as indicated by the DMV receipt. The car was registered to the original owner until 1979 (the last renewal in the glove box and last decal on the license plate). The car was sold to his friend and my boss, Leonard in Orange County, California. The odometer (title signed as original miles) showed the original miles as being 49,002. At that time, Leonard had the oil and filter changed and the chassis lubricated. Leonard was a car collector and on every car added to his collection would write the miles on a piece of tape and attach it to the driver side door jamb when the service had been completed (The tape is still on the door jamb). This Camaro was stored in a warehouse with multiple other cars, rarely driven, and never saw rain again. In April 1996 I attended a managers meeting at the corporate office in Santa Ana, California. During this visit I was given a tour of the private car collection (climate controlled) and laid my eyes on this gem for the first time. For months I thought about the Camaro and how much happier it would be in my garage instead of his. 4 months passed and then the first of several phone calls were made to Leonard inquiring about the Camaro. We struck a deal! The plan was for me to fly to California for the next managers in September 1996 and drive the car home. Leonard was to have the car service, gassed, washed, and ready for the 9 hour drive. With checkbook in hand, I drove my rental car around the corner to the corporate office and saw, what was to be mine, this beautiful Camaro parked out front for the world to see! Then the bad news…..While Leonard was getting the Camaro serviced a guy inquired about it and proceeded to offer him a lot more money than he and I had discussed. Leonard told me that he had decided to keep the car for now and offered me a deal on a 75 Corvette. I flew home with my tail between my legs and very disappointed! Years passed, the business sold, and I found myself working for a different company. In the spring of 2008 I received a call from my friend and mentor that Leonard had passed away. At the end of the phone conversation I recounted the story of the “1967 Camaro Convertible” that never happened and if the car still existed, I would like another shot at owning it. Great news!!! The car was still in the warehouse and in great condition. I was told by the family that they were willing to sell the car but that 1 other employee from years past was interested in it as well. To be fair the family ask each of us to give them a confidential bid and that the high bid would get the car. I had not seen this car in 12 years but with high bid offered, finally the car is mine! I lined up shipping and 10 days later the car was in my garage. Upon arrival the search began. The glove box contained the Owners Manual, the original DMV receipt listing the date and California “Black Plate” number issued to the car in 1967, some original finance documentation from the purchasers credit union, State Farm Insurance documentation, a receipt from the dealer for the trade of a 1963 MG Roadster, and balance due info upon delivery. (see pictures) The trunk was the big score! I first laid eyes on the original spare tire and blue convertible top boot. Under the top boot were two matching “California Black License Plates” that are desired by so many. I matched the DMV receipt in the glove box with the plates in the trunk….MATCH!!! HOLY GRAIL!!! (see pictures). Description / Condition (keep in mind it is 51 years old): 1967 Power Top Convertible Camaro was ordered, built, sold, and lived life in Southern California until I purchased it in 2008. California “Black Plate” NO RUST EVER! NEVER RESTORED! Currently shows 59,718 actual miles! Original 327 Engine, Original Automatic Transmission, Original Rear Differential! Drives like it did 50 years ago. Tracks straight, smooth power steering, and stops well. The factory blue deluxe interior is in very good shape. Optional Factory Deluxe Steering wheel still retains the aftermarket wrap installed from back in the late 60’s. The carpet looks very good. Dash and gauges are in great shape. Floor console and shifter look very good. The correct and original deluxe seatbelts are in place and in great shape. The convertible top is in great shape with no rips or tears. This Southern California Car is rust free! At some point in the late 60’s or early 70’s the car had some areas repainted. Much of the car appears to maintain original paint. I would judge the paint as 8 out of 10, a 10 footer for you perfectionists. Some paint touchups on rock chips and scratches have been done years ago. These may or may not show up in the pictures. The door jambs and interior painted areas appear to be untouched original paint. The wheel well molding trim has a few door dings from over the years of public parking. Bumpers are dent free and the chrome shines. The stainless trim around the windshield is beautiful. Engine compartment is basically untouched / not detailed or restored in any way and presents itself very well. All lights, blinkers and gauges work as they should. The windshield appears to be original and in great shape. All the window glass appears to be original and in excellent condition. The window tracks and internals need to be lubricated as they are a bit sticky trying to roll up the windows. The factory AM radio does not play music but the light comes on. The original trunk mat and spare tire are still in place! I have not located a build sheet inside the car but using a mirror and flashlight I think I can see a corner of it on the top of the gas tank. I could not see any signs that the tank has ever been removed so I left it in place as I have the original dealer order sheet (see pic). When I look at the overall condition of any classic car, a "Tell Tale" sign is the firewall and corrosion around the data plate and OEM rivots. Please zoom in on the firewall (never touched original finish) and the close up of the data plate and VIN Tag in the pictures. SOLID CAR! The Data Plate decoded: 67-12667 = 1967 model year, Convertible, Custom Interior LOS = Van Nuys, California (suburb of Los Angeles) 732-Z = Bright Blue Custom Bucket Seats F-4 = Marina Blue WD = Tinted Windshield, Power Convertible Top 2MG = Center Console, Powerglide Transmission 5BY = Appearance group, bumper guards, floor mats, door edge guards, deluxe seat belts. Some of the things I have done to the car include: Front and rear brakes. I had the starter and alternator internals rebuilt before any issues could happen. (But none of the 50 year old dust was removed) Replaced the fan belts Rebuilt the power top motor with new seals and replaced the fluid. Repaired and had painted a small dent on the front nose. New 1967 SS hood with the correct louvers, painted to match. New front and rear spoilers, rear spoiler painted to match. New rear shocks Correct style OEM Rally wheels 15x7 fronts (SS Camaro), 15x8 rear (Corvette) with new correct caps, rings New BFG P215/60r15 front and P235/60r15 rear tires Note: The rear spoiler, SS hood, and front nose were repainted as mentioned above. They are not a “Perfect” match to 50 year old paint. They show very well, very close match. Current Issues: Trans Fluid leak / drip from gear shift shaft on the side of transmission (Very common when these cars sit idle for a few weeks) Small oil leak from “updated” spin on oil filter kit. The cartridge style oil filter housing was replaced with a “Spin On” style conversion early in life. (1968 Camaros had the spin on style) The convertible power top motor is sluggish but works. I give it a little help by hand as necessary. This beautiful 67 Camaro has only been driven 10,716 miles over the past 40 years! Started every couple of weeks to ensure seals would not dry out. In its current condition I am completely confident that this car could be driven from New York to California and back without issues!
