Vehicle Detail

Up for sale is a 1991 Volvo 240 Sedan.I'll be honest, this is kind of a mixed bag. If you Google "Volvo 240" you'll find pages and pages of people who sing the praises of these cars. They use words like "impossible to kill", "sick RWD fun" and "spicy Swedish meatball". After driving this car for 6 months, I think the reality of daily-ing one of these is a little more nuanced.Let's start with the good. This thing runs and drives, and I actually believe the drivetrain would be tough to kill. The engine has always started right up. The transmission shifts just as sluggishly as you'd expect an early 90s automatic to shift. I've never been stranded in this car, and I wouldn't hesitate to rely on it for daily transportation. It is probably time for an oil change, but I also might do that myself if the weather is nice over the weekend. We took an easy trip to Baltimore and had no issues at all.It also has character. The previous owner named her "Daisy" and for some reason, the name stuck. I never name my cars, but my wife and I always refer to the white Volvo as Daisy. New exhaust was put on not long ago and I just installed a new battery.Daisy is also currently registered as an antique vehicle, which means no annual registration fees or safety inspections. The catch is you aren't supposed to drive an antique vehicle for regular transportation, but I think you'd only get in trouble if you racked up tons of miles or had a grudge with a police officer. The odometer is also broken - stuck at ~230,000 miles, so you'll be on your honor to report mileage anyway. In case this wasn't clear, the 230,225 listed is NOT ACTUAL MILEAGE!!!Now the bad. Daisy has character, which really means she has a few quirks (find a 26 year old car that doesn't... I'll wait...). The windshield wiper switch gets easily stuck in the 'on' position, some of the window motors are weak, and at least one of the door handles doesn't work. I think one of the brake lines is partially collapsed (it pulls pretty significantly when stopping), and there is some wear and tear on the inside - missing bits of plastic, speaker grilles, etc. Hood release doesn't work, but I just pop the grill off and pull the cable. The previous owner parked Daisy on the street in a big city every day so there are some dents, scratches and surface rust. If you don't like amnesty international, you'd best learn to like it because there is a sticker on there that is pretty much permanent. The license plate holder needs new bolts, one of the rear tail lights is out. The heater core was bypassed years ago and the a/c is currently not operational - don't know why. Heat and cold are for the weak, anyway - expensive luxuries. Back in the day, I drove a Super Beetle, and the only thing that came out of its vents was carbon monoxide. Compared to that, Daisy is a treat. At least the blower motor works, so you can get a nice breeze. Who is this a good car for? Well, the obvious choice would be someone who likes to play it shady. The antique plate and broken odometer would give you the perfect opportunity to pull a fast one on the commonwealth and skip out on a lifetime of registration & inspection fees. I'm not condoning that (you monster). If you want to learn to work on cars, this is a good one to start with. There is practically room to stand in the engine bay. Volvo forums are full of crazy people who adore these cars and are a pretty helpful and supportive community. Parts are also cheap. There isn't really much in the way of fancy computers or electronics, so you can fix most things with a cheap set of tools.I also think this would be a great first car for a teenager. First of all, it already has battle scars, so you won't lose sleep when you hear them scraping it in and out of the garage. Second of all, said battle scars make it kind of ugly, and all of the cool kids at school won't want to be anywhere near it. That means your precious cargo is less likely to be a teenage driver distracted by a carload of friends. Third of all, the lack of heat or a/c make it kind of uncomfortable to be in for long periods of time, so your kiddo probably won't want to use the back seat to learn about the birds and the bees with his significant other.Since you don't want your spawn to suffer an untimely death, you can take comfort in the fact that 1) it has a driver airbag and 2) it's a Volvo. It is also s l o w, so they won't be able to do anything too reckless.Car is sold AS IS. I tried to describe it as well as I could, but you might find more problems that I haven't noticed. Tough bananas - it's a cheapo beater car. If you drive it away and it breaks in two, you own two halves of a car. NO RESERVE. Buyer is responsible for transportation / delivery of car, title transfer fees, and any applicable taxes. I would be willing to drive this a few hours to deliver, but contact me first to discuss rate and timing. Otherwise, you'll need to use a car shipping service.
