Vehicle Detail
1981 Mercury Zephyr Wagon Up for auction is my classic unrestored 1981 Mercury Zephyr Station Wagon! Purchased from an estate in the dry and sunny climate of the Eastern Washington, Spokane area about 10 years ago. The car spent the next several years in dry storage in my dads airplane hanger in the upper Lake Chelan Canyon region, where it was periodically started and casually driven around the runway upon visits. Later, it was shop tuned and driven across the mountain home where its only been occasionally driven. Mileage shows 22,661 with these odometers turning over at 100k. I believe the mileage to be accurate, but can't be sure. The car may be driven with a some leisurely miles before auction end. Unrestored and remarkably straight, the original paint is nicely presentable. It's a very nice driver that turns heads. I believe it to be in nicer condition than any of the few rare times I have seen another either here on ebay or in person. It has a few door dings, patina and such, with a few long ago touchups and the factory pinstripes have some fading. A small ding on the top roof near the windshield that isn't very noticeable and some flaking of paint on the rear plastic license place box. The plastic Mercury left rear emblem/badge was broken in half a while back at a car wash. I had intentions of gluing it back on and will if I can locate it. If not these can usually be found here on ebay. The car is very solid with only a bit of surface rust below the bottom of the inside of the doors that could easily be rattle canned (present upon my original purchase). Structurally solid pans and trunk. The rear hatch struts need to be replaced as they no longer support the hatch, supported with a guide post as seen in pics. These are fairly inexpensive and universal to many models. Solid glass with a repaired rock chip on front windshield. The base interior is in overall solid shape with the front bench seat that the new owner may address at some point. The drivers side of the bench seat is sagging a bit as some of the bottom springs have detached and a few seams have just begun to separate. The springs may just need to be stretched back across, not real sure as I never got around to removing the seat and just drove it as was (see pics). The right rear door lock has never worked, probably just a bent rod because it appears to have tension and still be affixed. This rare wagon has the original 3.3L Ford Falcon 200 straight 6 manufactured by Mazda and the transmission shifts nice and smooth. Overall a 36 year old groovy old wagon! Has all four original hub caps! These wheel covers are in driver condition. They show nicely and could be cleaned up better if desired. The valve cover gasket was just replaced last week. I replaced the headliner myself before last summer with a color matching blue foam backed naugahyde and it came out very nice. It was prepped right with the fiber board being meticulously sanded for good adhesion, no sags after both hot and cold seasons! Included is the rare old carpeted dash mat and vintage cup holder(ha). Exhaust and muffler was just replaced upon my original purchase. New starter and solenoid. Battery a few years ago. I replaced all the rubber fuel line hose last year and included a larger see thru inline fuel filter for debri. I had intentions of dropping the tank for inspecting and cleaning but never got around to it. You may or may not decide to. I would recommend fine tuning the holley 1 barrel carb for your area, very easy task. Additionally, I will be including a spare carburetor for possible use or rebuild. The kits are cheap and there isn't much to these old 1 barrels. The ac compressor is there, but is likely seized as it has been bypassed with the belts so the ac is currently non operational. The heater blows hot and the rear window defroster is fully functional! The car may be a California model or just an emission compliant model for that era, not real sure as it has a smog pump and a vacuum emission system that could be thinned out if desired. It no longer requires an emissions test in most states as its a classic. NOTE: The left back tire is currently the mismatched spare. I will replace the rear tires or all four with good used ones depending on auction activity. It may be hard to find whitewalls, not real sure! Or I'll leave it up to the new owner. I'll revisit this. Additionally: I will be removing my satellite sound system and my tool/stow box from the rear hatch these items are not included. THESE WAGONS ARE GETTING VERY HARD TO FIND ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION! THE MERCURY ZEPHYR IS EVEN RARER THAN ITS FORD FAIRMONT COUNTERPART! Don't miss out on "White Lightning" This vehicle is being sold as is, where is with no warranty. Keep in mind that this is a vintage 36yr old motor vehicle that may require mechanical knowledge or service as can be expected with older vehicles.I have described the condition of this vehicle best effort.Deposit of $500 dollars required within 24hr of auction close with the balance due within 7 days of auction close.Buyer is responsible for local pickup or arranged shipping.
