Vehicle Detail
1936 Ford Cabriolet Project A very substantial Cabriolet, with a whole lot done, and lot more left to do. Been sitting for years in a commercial garage awaiting some magic, because this is a magical and legendary find for a dream rod or restoration. Has the desirable rumble seat, and the spare tire kit mounted to the rear. The unfinished restoration work performed on this car stopped years ago, it’s been stored in like condition since. That work includes body and frame down to the metal, Mustang II front clip, crate 350 engine, four wheel power disc brake conversion (fronts mounted, rears are not but come with sale). Complete new suspension, front and rear. 8” Ford rear end with heavy duty shackles on the axle. Model 68 or 48 undetermined. All steel. Previous rust issues repaired long ago, new floor and other areas of sheet metal replaced. The original frame has no existing corrosion. Some minor surface rust found in various places. The current owner runs a well-respected body and frame shop and gives the quality of the past work a 7 on scale of 1-10. In other words, a perfectionist might want to redo the whole damn thing, and a more relaxed owner might want to turn it into a rat rod. Prep and primer in current condition is feasible. One former Oregon owner from 1955 to 2015, with the clear and original title from 1955. The next and current owner never transferred the title from the previous owner's name, so the sale will come with the valid 1955 title and a bill of sale for transfer to the new owner's name. No data tags on this car, but the frame will be inspected for the factory serial numbers. New or Original Parts still present: The rear disc brake set up, minus rotors. (Fronts installed)New uninstalled Speedway shifter and linkage. New crate 350 engine with intake manifold and headers, installed but without other engine components and never fired. Engine turns, so it's not frozen and that's all the current owner knows about it. The windshield is in, the rest of the glass is on hand and in good condition. Window regulators and inner door assemblies just require bolting in. Nice door handles and mechanisms on the car. All fragile lighting pods -- headlights, tail lights, in admirable condition. Complete dual exhaust system installed. American Mags and tires that hold air. And the two round pads that serve as steps up to the rumble seat are affixed where they should be on the right tail light and rear fender. All new suspension parts, including springs and shocks. All the convertible top framing and bows present and operable. Canvas top in only fair condition. The three chrome spears the factory applied to each side of the hood are accounted for. Original steering wheel retained. All the inner sheet metal and supports are complete -- fender wells, engine bay, etc. The rumble seat is hinged and works nicely. Glove compartment door on hand. A few other tubs of irreplaceable and original miscellany. Parts no longer present: Brake rotors for the rear are missing (rear calipers present). Dummy transmission, just there for mounting the engine. No interior whatever, a metal cage with some previous strut reinforcement. No dash instruments or gauges of any kind were retained. Missing the hood emblem and associated chrome at the top hood center. No doubt dozens of other little missing things not yet inventoried. 792,000 is one figure used for all Fords built in 1936, but only 11,000 Cabriolets. For decades considered the Holy Grail of classic Fords. Not your garden variety collector car and not frequently available at this starting point. An opportunity for the collector or rebuilder of renowned American cars of the past. Send me your e-mail address and I'll send you additional photos of the car.
