Vehicle Detail
Recently inherited 1981 BMW 635 that was purchased in Germany when it was a year old and imported into the US. This is a European version 635. The trunk says CSI, and WIKI BMW agrees. The car has sat for the last 10 years as the original owner could no longer drive it. He did what he thought was good for it to keep it from rusting and that was to sand the areas and use house paint wher the original paint was thin paint and starting to show surface rust. California car from the time it was imported, I don't see any serious rust or even accident damage. The bumpers are nice and straight as are all the panels. All 4 rims are in good condition with both of the right side wheels having only minor curb rash. The interior is in fair shape. The front seats have either been recovered or were replaced with period sport seats The back seat looks like it was rarely used. All the floors are solid. Even the spare tire well. We looked the car over and did a few tests. The compression was 135-140 psi across the 6 cylinders. There was no power to the dash, but all the fuses were good. This is as far as we went. After spending a couple of hours looking into the car, the family member decided that it may too much for them to take on. This is a great project if you need a car that is not rusted out and are more familiar with these cars than we are. Car comes with a clear California title. The title states that this is a 1981 car, however eBay's system will not accept that model year with the vin that is on the title and the car. So I changed the year model of the car in the listing to 1980. The car may actually be a 1980 vehicle and since it was imported to the US in 1981 that may be why it has a 1981 title. OR, they did not have 17 digit vin numbers in Europe in 1981 and since this is a US site, it will not let me put that in. So in summary, this may be a 1980 or 1981 car. Shipping is the responsibility of the winning bidder. We will do what we can on our end to help. If you are purchasing from out of the country, we can assist you in getting the car to a freight forwarder in the San Francisco Bay Area, for a fee. On Dec-05-16 at 11:58:06 PST, seller added the following information: We have had more than a few questions about the VIN number on the car. Prior to 1981 you did not have to have a 17 digit VIN, 10 digits was perfectly acceptable. I missed a digit on the initial entry. The VIN for the car is actually TP1251761H. We have since posted a picture of the dash VIN tag and I have (below) pictures of the tag that is in the engine compartment and the stamped right front shock tower with the same number. Also the car is a 5 speed. Reverse is located just left of where 1st gear would be and first is where 2nd would be and so on, with 5th ending in the lower right position. Again, the car was purchased used in Europe and then brought to the US in 1981. http://kevinkayrestorations.com/bmw635
