Vehicle Detail

FYI - This is a no reserve auction, whatever it goes for it goes for."I've got love for you if you were born in the 80's"; Not only is this a lyric from a great song it is also the truth. I was born in the 80's, and like most people my age I was around to see the great japanese cars from the 80's and 90's when they were new. But I wasn't old enough or I didn't have enough money to actually drive one. I remember not understanding why my parents didn't just test drive all the cool new cars that come out, it's free at the dealer right? That used to be my favorite thing to do, get my parents to take me to the different brands of car dealers and see the new cars. I remember one time an Acura dealer actually took me for a ride in a brand new NSX, I thought I was the coolest..........and then I grew up. Now I can actually afford these cars and I know everything about all of them, which ones were legit, which ones looked great on paper but sucked in real life, and I have owned just about all of them at one time or another. They became like pokemon and I was just throwing poke balls all over that place. Similar to that meme of the really fat chick at the college party referencing snorlax and ALL of the pokeballs lol. I was never a huge fan of nissans, they just weren't a Toyota or a Honda, or even a DSM. The 240sx is probably about as right as they ever got it, or so I thought. Asside from having way too many control arms, a tin can unibody that i'm fairly sure rattles as much as the timing chain tensioners they couldn't figure out, they were pretty good cars and the go to vehicle to compete against the AE86. The Z31 300ZX was actually pretty good too, the Z32 on the other hand was a total POS. The VG30 in general fell behind the times fast, I remember when they came out with the supercharged versions in trucks which barely competed with other naturally aspirated V6's. The SR20 is one of the best 4 cylinders ever made, the R34 and R32 skyline are their own unique breed, but the RB25 and RB26 were never able to match the 2JZ across the board. Around a track though skylines beat supras as they are a more track oriented package where supras are a gran touring i'll beat you on the interstate thing. All that being said I don't like Nissans much. The last 96' Z32 TT 5-Speed I had made me want to jump off a cliff, and now Nissan is 47% owned by Renault?!? The only war the french ever won was against themselves, or when lead by a 4 foot tall guy. The new titan XD looks terrible, and the driveline doesn't look beefed up much with that diesel in there, i'm interested to see how they hold up. The fact that Toyota is going to use the same engine is retarded, they own an entire diesel division called Hino, which makes great engines and trucks sold in the united states. Ok fine i'll stop ranting, what I meant to say is whatever Nissan got wrong, Datsun got right. I am a fan of Datsun. The only other Datsun i've driven was a copper orange hardbody truck with an electronic carb 4 cyl 5-speed 2wd setup. No idea what year it was, but we went on an epic roadtrip that would take 2 more pages to describe, needless to say we were delivering an AE86 GTS to its new owners and picking up a silvertop 20v 4AGE engine and we needed a truck. The woman I was renting a room from let me borrow this old ass Datsun which sat under a tree its whole life so it had mold growing all over it and smelled like ass. So were driving down the interstate and in road trip fashion we decided to do a 40 roll between the truck and the GTS. Without any suspense i'll just tell you the truck won. It wasn't by much but the fact that a 4cyl electronic carb'd truck beat a 4AGE corolla (that obviously wasn't 100% healthy) was something to see. After that, even though they are the same company, in my mind I drew a line between Datsun and Nissan. Enter this 1983 Datsun 280ZX Turbo 5-Speed. The last year Datsun was a brand, the fastest production car sold in the united states in 1983 (asside from a few exotics), and all around the best "nissan" I have ever driven. Just because I am old enough to buy all these cars now doesn't mean I get to experience them like they were when they were new. 95% of every japanese sports car made before 1998 has been modified, beat to shit, lost, stolen, used for a party shack, destroyed, or just plain maintained by the wrong people. I've had maybe 3x like new experiences in my life. One with a 1992 Toyota Supra Turbo 5-Speed that had like 108k on it and was absolutely mint stock and amazing, like time travel. 2x 1985 Corolla GTS that although they had some miles both were one owner cars and in great shape. And now this car. It is quite possibly the last one owner 1983 Datsun 280zx turbo 5-Speed in NC, and it is an experience to drive. Moral of this story is that it is better than tickle me elmo or pokemon go. If you've made it this far through my opinions clearly you're still interested in the car. Long story short it was originally driven by the owner of the Triad Datsun dealer in winston salem back when it was new in 1983, it has a late production date of 1/83 so it was one of the last ones to come in. Car is fully loaded minus the leather and digital dash (which I hate old japanese leather and digital dashes break despite how awesome they are). He put about 10k on it but never titled it just drove it with dealer plates. The car was then sold to the only registered owner of the vehicle who proceeded to own it in Gastonia NC for literally the rest of his life. Sadly he passed away a couple years back and the car got pulled out of the garage. It was then donated to charity and now it is up for sale. Since the previous owner passed away we had to transfer the title into my name to get it out of his name with all the paperwork required. Now it has a clean clear ready to go title in my name. Car has never been in a wreck per carfax and I don’t see any evidence to show otherwise. The carfax record is immaculate, it was never even late for registration, every single year since carfax started recording in 1990 it has had a state inspection and registration all the way up to 2015 in the same exact city. I also have a thick stack of every bill paid for this vehicle maintenance wise, that will go with the carfax record to the new owner. On top of that (I couldn’t believe he kept it) it also has all 3x original keys with the original yellow plastic dealer key tag that has his name, the miles at the time of purchase (10,839), and other info. As well as the original title in the original envelope. He never even bothered to put the keys on his normal key ring. Below are all the details on the car, read down if you’re still interested. Please feel free to ask questions if you feel I missed something or got something wrong, I’ll try to be as descriptive as possible. Interior: Interior is a 9/10 for the age. It still has the original embroidered 280zx Turbo floor mats and very few components show any wear though the car was driven an average of 3,000 miles per year. The A/C blows cold, yes that is right an air conditioning system from 1983 still works good, as does the heat. From what I can tell it is still running off the R12 though it may have been converted, all I know is my brain melted when I realized the A/C still works. The seats are in near perfect condition, only thing wrong is the drivers seat belt guide is missing. The carpet and the headliner are in great shape as is everything in the hatch, it shows no signs of having any water leaks anywhere ever. Floor under the carpet in the hatch is perfect. Still has the factory T-Top bags and tie down straps. Power antenna works great, so do the cable operated quarter windows that pop out and the power mirrors with joysticks. All seat adjustments work. Car is equipped with cruise control power windows power mirrors power locks etc… This car is also equipped with the creepy female voice telling you your lights are on or your door is ajar. All of the gauges work except the oil temp sensor which is probably the least important gauge and a simple 1 wire sensor replacement if you want it to work again. Dash has a few sealed cracks in it like every other 280zx on the planet that hasn’t had its dash replaced, you can buy new caps for them for cheap because it was such a widespread issue but I felt like leaving it original. Everything else works perfect, all the gauges, the radio crackles a little if you adjust the volume but clears right back out as soon as you stop touching it, every light, every feature still works. All the controls work, the glove box opens and closes great, T-Top shades function correctly etc…. Basically it is 95% there you can make it 100% with minimal attention just the fun corrections, it feels like it should, it feels like you’re driving in 1983 when you’re out in the country and there are no other signs to tell you it is 2016. Exterior: Again a 8.5/10 for the age easy. Now understand this car has been driven, it was enjoyed, it was this doctor’s sidekick for the last 26 years, it actually has a story and a personality it didn’t just sit in a garage being a soulless trophy. So it is in by no means perfect condition, it is not mint, but it is clean with all the right things going for it. The paint is original as far as I can tell, doesn’t have any wrecks on carfax, doesn’t show any signs of ever being in a wreck. All of the original fasteners are there, all the gaps line up, all the moldings and trim pieces, the doors and hatch open and close perfectly, no water leaks, it has all the signs of a true barn find. The original clear coat still shines and most of the car has zero dents though there are some dings on the hood that are easy paintless dent removal work. It has 2 small paint chips on the whole car and one small surface rust spot below the drivers tail light that is minor and easily fixable. The undercarriage is very clean and has no structural rust issues, the car was garaged all the way up until the last year when it was parked outside before I transferred it into my A/C controlled garage. It doesn’t look like he even drove it in the rain. Some of the black trim has a couple flakes, but overall the black trim/seals etc… are all in great shape and they are all present. All of the original wipers are still there, we just out refills in the stock blades. All the lights, windows, wipers, horn, headlight washers, windshield washers, power antenna, stock locking gas cap, T-Tops, etc all work as they should. Again just like the interior it needs nothing but easy fun repairs to be 100% perfect. Mechanical: Mechanically the car is 9.75/10. I looked long and hard trying to find anything wrong with it. I only found 2x problems, the headlight washer fluid bottle is cracked from age ($10 fix), and it could probably use a valve adjustment only because I don’t know when the last one was done as I didn’t see it on the receipts. The engine runs smooth as silk, quiet for an old OHV non-crossflow I-6, all stock, like new. Maybe I just enjoy valve adjustments especially when they are this easy, infact if you’re willing to give me an extra $50 I’ll gladly do it for you just as preventative maintenance. It runs and drives perfect, starts cold, starts hot, starts at night, in the day, in 100 degree weather, it is ready to go. No smoke, no leaks that I’ve seen, no warning lights other than the low washer fluid from the headlamp bottle, VERY strong oil pressure, never goes above half on the temp gauge, all gauges work perfect, turbo boosts strong, still just as fast as it was when it was new. Transmission shifts like butter but has a firm notch into every gear, no whines, no grinds, no noises from the drivetrain whatsoever. It has new tires all around, new brakes all around, a new clutch 5k miles ago, air filter, all new fluids, just got an oil change, new cap rotor, wires, plugs, new coil, new brake master cylinder, new coolant hoses, new vacuum hoses, all the good maintenance has been done. The AFM has been tuned a little on the richer safer side but it can easily be dialed back if you want, just helps with the boost transition coming off boost but if it is cold/hot enough outside you can hit fuel cut prematurely. The original wheels are in perfect shape as is the suspension as far as I can tell, not a pop squeak or rattle out of the whole vehicle. All the bushings steering alignment etc is perfect. It literally feels like you are driving a new 1983 280zx turbo. That’s all I can think of right now, if you have any more questions or I missed anything please feel free to ask not trying to hide anything, I am actually sitting in front of the car while I type this up to try to remember all the details. I really could just say the car is very clean and that would pretty much sum it up. Thanks for looking!
