On Aug-24-15 at 10:57:18 PDT, seller added the following information: Received this comment on Saturday after posting the ad and felt it worthy of sharing for your information: "I had the honor of inspecting this very car back in 1990. At that time I concluded it was indeed an authentic Edsel Ranger Squad Car. Among the many features, the interior from the factory was a 1958 Ford Fairlane's, which is why the data plate code on this car has been left blank. It was fitted with HD rear leaf springs and had a Leece-Neville alternator under the hood rather than a generator. There had been several holes filled in on this car such as for spot lights on the A-pillars and there were mounting holes in the trunk for the two-way radio. Most telling is the column automatic transmission, an option not available after January 1, 1958 on the Edsel, except for fleet (like police car) orders. You indeed have a very special Edsel." Phil Skinner, Former President, Edsel Owners ClubOn Aug-25-15 at 10:42:05 PDT, seller added the following information: An additional comment received: A little follow-up on your Edsel. When the Edsel was introduced in September 1957, the automatic transmission was an option in the Ranger, Pacer and station wagon models. Buyer had a choice of shifters, the column-lever type such as yours and indicated by the #3 on the data plate, or the more expensive push-button Teletouch system. Edsel had ordered quite a few Teletouch units and pushed this feature heavily. Towards the end of the 1957 calendar year, and in order to use up the already on-hand Teletouch units, dealers were notified that as of January 2, 1958, the column-lever automatic would no long be available as a "regular production option" or RPO. However, fleet orders, such as taxi-cabs, rental cars or police vehicles, could still get the lever-type shifter for automatics. Over the years I have recorded data from over 11,000 Edsels and to date, with one exception, all column automatic 1958 Edsels I have found were on law enforcement vehicles, and the one exception was originally a rental car. Just another confirmation of the authenticity of your car.
