Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE It is with sadness that we must let go of our beloved Vanagon Westfalia. We bought it about 2 years ago and have enjoyed many adventures while carefully and painstakingly restoring it. However, we have finally found a 1989 Westfalia Syncro so this one must go. The van is offered with no reserve and will be sold to the highest bidder. Here is a brief summary: · 1987 Vanagon Westfalia 2WD originally sold in California · Fresh paint job · 128228 miles on the odometer · Engine and transmission rebuild in the last 3 years · New poptop canvas · Clean CarFaxV Van is located in the Bay Area and auction is in $US. · Currently registered and smoggedV In addition to multiple trips to our house in Tahoe, we have also taken this van from San Francisco to San Diego to Denver and back to SF and I would not hesitate to do it again. The van is all original and maintained to top quality. It can be enjoyed as-is or taken to the next level by the next owner (larger 15” wheels, dual battery, etc). *** And now for all the details: Mechanics: Let’s start with the essentials – engine and transmission. The engine has been replaced about 1.5 years ago with a reconditioned engine. At the time, a lot of related work was done – new water pump, new engine mounts, new fuel lines, new exhaust seals, new catalytic converter (CARB compliant $$$), new oil pressure sensors, new clutch, new muffler brackets, remanufactured MAF, etc. This engine is one of the best I have driven in a Vanagon. It sounds nice, pulls nice and passed smog with flying colors. You can cruise 75 mph on highway 5 easily. There is no oil warning (level or pressure) issue or hesitation when accelerating. And to demonstrate this, I took a compression test just before putting this ad and I have the results to share: 155-150-145-150. That is exceptionally good for a waterboxer engine. I will be happy to send you a copy of the last smog results – the emissions values are very impressive and are well below average. If the future owner is from California, I would be happy to provide a fresh smog certificate with the van. The previous owner had replaced the transmission. We put new bushings in the shifter/linkage and replaced the master clutch cylinder recently. The van shifts perfectly, there is no grinding noise and no issue shifting when cold. The cooling system has also been refreshed – a new coolant tower on the engine, new coolant distribution pipe, new coolant sensors, etc. The temperature is always at the right level even in the traffic in L.A. Everything else is in perfect working order – CV axles, brakes, wheel bearings, starter, alternator, etc. – no issues whatsoever. The rear springs have been replaced to address some sagging (common with Westfalia after 25 years) and new shocks have been installed 2 weeks ago. The steering rack and tie-rod ends were also replaced about 1 year ago and a new alignment performed. There are no vibrations. The tires have about 70% tread left and are mounted on the original 14” VW allow wheels with correct center caps. Everything electrical works as it should – all the lights, rpm, back and rear heater fans, power windows, power mirrors, etc. The power windows are aftermarket and work very well. New glass has been installed on the power mirrors. Radio and speakers are aftermarket and are quite decent. It comes with a remote so you can control it from the bed or from outside. The van originally equpped with A/C but it is currently not functional. The compressor was not with the van when I got it so it needs more than just a recharge. That was the next big project on this van. Body: We just had the van painted – not because of rust but because the original paint was faded. I can provide pictures of the condition of the van before the paint job if desired. The paint is very nice. It is not a $10,000 "Concours D’Elegance" paint job but it does make the van looks like new. There is no rust at all – the undercarriage and frame are all dry. The van spent most of its life in California and Colorado and it shows. The van has had a bit of a facelift by replacing the bumpers with the later model fiberglass ones and by removing the chrome trim around the glass. The front windshield was replaced and a brand new seal installed – there are no cracks, chips or leaks. The rear hatch struts are new. The canvas was replaced about 6 months ago and has 3 windows. The skylight and lifting mechanism have been replaced. All the original Westfalia stickers have been either preserved or replaced when available. New antenna. Interior: Everything is original and working as it should. The van has all the original curtains in perfect condition including the cover/screen for the skylight. The seats are firm but could use a good shampoo. The passenger side seat has a small hole in it but barely visible. All the adjustable armrests are present and work as they should. The mattress covers have been cleaned and are in perfect shape. The inside of the top was cleaned when the canvas was replaced and there is no mold (my wife is quite picky on this...) The cabinets are all original but they have some tiny dents and scratches here and there – something you would expect with any 25 year-old campervan. There is a dent in the headliner that was there when we got the van. I have a dome light to install in that location to cover it while providing additional and needed light. I never had the chance to install it yet, but it will come with the van. The front carpet was replaced with a carpet kit from Sewfine. The quality is not as good as the OEM but it looks decent. The van also has GoWesty rubber mats. The dash has no cracks and is in great shape. Non-Smoker and No Pet(s). Overall the interior is in very decent condition but the seats could benefit from a good cleanup. Camping equipment: The camping outlets are brand new from GoWesty (new improved design). The fresh water pump is brand new and the faucet has been replaced with the latest Shurflo design. The stove works but the propane tank is currently empty (I did not want to fill it in case we need to ship the Westfalia) The fridge has been removed and a nice “delete” kit has been installed. I will provide the original fridge with the van, but I strongly suggest budgeting for an Engel or ARB instead (that’s what we have been using and we love it, but it’s not included). *** Disclaimer: As good as this vehicle is, one must be aware that these vans require continuous “love”. The more effort you put in your relationship with it, the more it will give back. It is therefore sold as-is/where-is. That said, please do not hesitate to communicate if you have any questions – I know this van inside out and I will be happy to answer and help the best I can. Short of paying $50000+ from a GoWesty reconditioned van, I honestly doubt you will find a better value.Thank you and good luck bidding.Christian On May-25-15 at 21:04:19 PDT, seller added the following information: Edit : I added a picture of the last smog results. It's a little small but the HC (PPM) is at 15 (max 129, average 36) and the CO (%) is at 0.01 (max 0.84, average 0.17) at 15 mph and about the same at 25 mph.It is exceptionally clean. I also wanted to mention that all the locks (doors, sliding doors, rear hatch and ignition) are working with the same key which is rare nowadays. I have many receipts and invoices for all the parts that have been purchased and the work that has been done. Thank you!On May-30-15 at 20:49:21 PDT, seller added the following information: Only one day left! I took the Westfalia for one last drive around the block and I am so going to miss it. I thought I would add more details which I forget to include: -It has a brand new battery (about one month old). -When the van was painted, we removed all the hooks on the luggage rack on the front. These were repainted and new aluminum rivets used to put them back in place.-I went through every arm rest on the front seats, remove them and tight them back and put new lock-tite on the hidden bolts. The work perfectly, they are not flimsy or falling down. -I have all the original 1987 VW manuals (including the camper supplement and the radio).-The sliding door mechanism has been greased and adjusted - the door closes the way it should.-We have installed hard wood flooring in the camper compartment. -The van comes with the correct jack and lug nut wrench in the VW original plastic bag (the bag itself is a bit old...)-We installed FatMat Extreme to reduce sound/vibration in the front doors and the sliding door.-The horn is not working. I have not had the chance to look into it.-I would be happy to deliver it for a fee (within reasonable distance). Thank you and good luck bidding! Christian
