Vehicle Detail

0 0 1 289 1649 Atkins North America 13 3 1935 14.0 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE The Mercedes-Benz W 113 is a two-seat roadster introduced in 1963 and produced through 1971. Despite its age, it still feels like a new car, which serves as a testament to the advanced design and construction of this fine automobile. This was the very first Mercedes to feature a “safety body” with designated crumple zones and was among the very first vehicles to come equipped with radial-ply tires. Everywhere you go, someone always has something nice to say about the car: “That is a very cool looking car; what is it?” or “I would drive that car every day the sun was shining, if I owned it.” And best of all, you can. With a perky engine and nimble suspension, the automatic transmission and power-assisted brakes make this a very driveable classic. Among the famous owners of the 280 SL are Charlton Heston, Tony Curtis, John Lennon, Peter Ustinov, Sophia Loren and Stirling Moss. Of the 48,912 produced, 19,440 were sold in the US. All models were equipped with an inline-6 cylinder engine and very reliable multi-port fuel injection. The bonnet, trunk lid, and doors skins were made of aluminum to reduce weight and improve fuel economy. Factory-original options include automatic transmission, AM/FM radio, bumper guards and headrests. Aftermarket air-conditioning was added by a former owner (see photos). During restoration, the collector elected to refinish the exterior in brilliant silver metallic paint with jet black interior upholstery and gunmetal gray carpeting. A premium cloth convertible top and crystal clear rear window have been professionally installed. Radial tires are mounted on authentic M-B alloy wheels. The base price for a 280 SL was originally $7,884 (East Coast). Today, a car in poor to good condition sells for about $40,000, while the very best examples going for as much as $395,000. These are expensive cars to restore, especially when original parts are missing; which makes this 280 SL a real bargain at a reserve price well below current market value.
