Vehicle Detail
You are looking at Wynonna, my 2003 UZJ100 Toyota Land Cruiser. (Yes I name my vehicles. I buy vehicles that mean something to me and that I require complete confidence in.) Wynonna has been my companion traveling over highways, deserts and mountains for the last 90,000 miles. I bought Wynonna after many months of searching for the “right” 100 Series Land Cruiser. When I found her she was in completely stock form and looked as though she had lived a simple life. I was replacing my FJZ80 Land Cruiser which took me From Alaska to the tip of South America. I have had other Land Cruisers before that, and each has helped me develop the modifications that best fit my needs. As with the others, I slowly and methodically made changes, additions and modifications to Wynonna to ensure the most adaptable and versatile vehicle for my current needs. The 2003 Land Cruiser benefitted from a minor facelift on the exterior and interior as well as the addition of the 5-Speed automatic transmission, which greatly improves the drivability of the 100 series. It has factory navigation, factory DVD and an upgraded dash. It also has HomeLink capability. The leather seats are heated up front and are in real good condition. The third row seats have been in storage since I’ve owned it and look brand new. The interior is not perfect but overall it is in very nice shape; I’d say a solid 8/10. Wynonna has taken me many miles through the deserts and mountains of Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, California and Baja California. She has made many journeys and has many memories of every type of terrain imaginable. It will be hard to say goodbye to Wynonna. But…the time has come to move on to differing adventures in my life and a newer vehicle with differing strengths was needed. My latest adventures are filled with desert racing. The need for a vehicle both capable of towing the race car and doing some high speed pre-running, dictated Wynonna’s replacement. I desert race in a 2010 Toyota Land Cruiser and would like to have the same vehicle for my personal exploring as well as chasing during races. Below I have tried to describe Wynonna to the best of my ability, breaking her down by major systems. If you have questions as to why I did what I did or anything else, please email me at dave@expeditionamericas.com Engine/Fuel Management The engine powering Wynonna is the powerful and ultra-reliable engine that Toyota has used in hundreds of thousands of vehicles, the 4.7 liter dual overhead cam 24-valve 2UZ-FE. This engine has proved to be one of the most reliable of Toyota’s engines, with many amassing mileage into the 3-400k range with basic to minimal maintenance. A ScanGuage II has been used to monitor the vitals of the powerplant more closely than the stock gauges allow. A 36 gallon custom aluminum auxiliary tank adds essential fuel storage for the long stretches of unknown and unpredictable fuel availability often found in 3rd world countries. Filling the auxiliary tank is easily done through the stock gas filler, the FrontRunner filler neck is to be able to fill both tanks. The factory muffler was replaced with a Magnaflow and the stock resonator was eliminated as well. It has a nice sound but isn’t too loud at all. Suspension Suspension has been an ongoing upgrade during Wynonna’s life with me. As modifications and accessories were added and as more advanced components became available on the market, she was fitted with different suspension set ups. Up front she runs OME HD torsion bars and NitroCharger Sport shocks with Total Chaos UCAs (the Uniballs were just replaced). A Slee Off-Road Differential Drop returns the CV angles to near stock. In the rear she uses two sets of springs depending on load. OME 863s handle day-to-day use and solo trips while OME 864s are placed when she is carrying a full load of people and equipment. OME NitroCharger Sport Shocks handle the damping. Beefy OME rear lower control arms stand up to any rock crawling duties much better than the stockers. I’ve found this set up gives Wynonna a very stable and predicable ride in most all situations. Tires/Wheels Wynonna currently rides on the newly released BFG All Terrain KO2 tire in 285 75 16 (33”) fitted over 5 powder coated factory rims. 5 tires were purchased just this last October and they have about 7k miles on them Armor/Recovery Up front Wynonna deviated from the typical front-end protection and wears a custom one-off prerunner winch bumper fabricated by DP Custom Fab. Housed within is a Warn ZEON 10-S 10k lb winch wound with Spydura Synthetic Rope and terminated with a Factor 55 thimble which has rescued Wynonna from silt, mud and other calamities during my exploring. Additionally protecting Wynonna from the hard surfaces of the Earth are a pair of BIOR Rock Sliders and a TJM Rear Bumper with Swing-away Tire Carrier. The armor has done very well protecting her but she has had a few very slight bumps and bruises along the way. I have tried to show the true condition of her paint in the photos. I just had a full detail done inside and out with a polish and wax and leather conditioning. Overall she looks amazing considering the miles traveled and the places she’s seen. Electrical Baja Designs HID lights and Rigid Industries LEDs illuminate the trail or desolate highway when late night driving is called for. Two 6” Pencil Beam HIDs and two 4” Euro Beam HIDs light up the distance while the 6” LEDs fill in the voids. The factory Low beams also have an HID conversion. A Duralast Platinum AGM battery replaced the tired OEM unit and has worked flawlessly for all Wynonna’s needs. An additional fuse block was mounted on the rear D pillar and currently only furnishes power to the always hot 12V outlet also on the D pillar. A BlueSea 12 Circuit Fuse Block was mounted under the hood on the driver’s inner fender. Roof Rack A Front Runner half roof rack is mounted to full length mounting rails. An ARB 2M Awning supplies great shade or rain protection wherever you park or camp. Also mounted on the rack is a shovel mount and shovel, which will be included. The MaxTrax shown in the photos will not be included. Entertainment To ease any long mileage days, a DICE MediaBridge USB/iPod/Bluetooth adapter was connected to the factory head unit for ease of playing music. The factory head unit has been modified to plays video (for your passengers) while driving. The door speakers have been upgraded to Polk Audio and a Kicker powered-Sub has been added behind the second row of seating. Wynonna has the Toyota flip down DVD entertainment package as well but I've never used it. Other Accessories/Info/Maintenance While the factory A-TRAC does a nice job of controlling wheel spin offroad, an ARB Air Locker was installed in the rear axle by Cruiser Outfitters for extra traction when needed. An ARB Dual Compressor was installed under the hood to activate the locker and does double duty in filling tires or running air tools as needed. For the cleanest install with a factory look, the locker and compressor were connected to an 80 Series Land Cruiser locker switch, with the first position controlling the air compressor and the second position activating the locker. An AutoPage keyless entry/remote start is a convenience which I have come to love. A cooled cabin or warmed seats before hopping in are a nice luxury. A Kenwood TM-281 144Mhz radio is installed on the back of the center console and has been used in Mexico for our race communications. I have kept up on maintenance as needed and she gets regular oil changes with Synthetic oil. I have done all the small stuff (suspension, brakes, bumper mounting, etc) while a Toyota T-TEN Master Certified Mechanic has done anything more involved (Timing belt/water pump, seal replacements) 89k Miles Timing Belt, water pump, spark plugs 136k Miles Transmission flush, 1 new CV, Front diff inner axle seal, Transfer case output seal 161k Miles New brakes, new tires, 3 CV boots, alignment 168k miles Rear axle bearing and seal, parking brake adjustment I have a CarFax report that I can email to you if you send me your email. I am happy to help with shipping arrangements or pick you up from SLC International Airport.
