Vehicle Detail

A rare and already collectible car (only 722 were imported to North America in 2006), the first generation Honda Insight is not only the most aerodynamic mass produced vehicle in history, but it is also the highest mileage non-plug-in hybrid produced to date. This is a one owner car and, according to the sales representative at Miller Honda in Van Nuys, California when the car was purchased, this specific car was the very last new first generation Honda Insight imported to North America. It was the last of the 722. Always garaged, the car is in phenomenal cosmetic condition, and, I swear, doesn't drive any differently than when it was brand new. There are no door dings (not a single one), and both the front and rear bumpers are free of nicks and scratches, a remarkable feat in Los Angeles. As of 2014, the first generation Insight still ranks as the most fuel-efficient EPA certified gasoline-fueled vehicle, with a highway rating of 61 miles per US gallon and combined city/highway rating of 53 miles per gallon. This particular vehicle, when driven conservatively, averages 54 miles per gallon on the freeway and 48 miles per gallon in the city. Driving back and forth from Reseda to Westwood (some surface street driving and the rest freeway), I drove the car moderately and averaged 52 miles per gallon. On long road trips, I've averaged 57 miles per gallon. Last summer when I hit the 115,000 mile mark (the car is at 122,000 now), the IMA light illuminated, which normally indicates that it's time to replace the battery pack. A well known trick with Insight aficionados (instead of dropping $4,000 on a new battery pack) is Hybrid Automotive's grid charger. I purchased their grid charger with the decharge feature. After successfully installing the grid charger, I plugged it in. After 24 hours, the grid charger had decharged all battery cells, balanced them, recharged them, and the battery pack now holds approximately 120% more charge than it did when it was brand new. To be on the safe side, I recharge every month or two. I know of other Insight owners that have gotten an extra 100,000 miles out of their battery packs. I'm about 7,000 miles into this one. Depending on how charged up the battery pack is before grid charging, the process now takes only between 8 and 16 hours. This is an extremely rare car in phenomenal condition. It can be a daily driver or something for your collection.
