Vehicle Detail
I am offering up my 1960 El Camino, a project that I don't think I will ever get around to starting let alone finishing! I bought the car locally from a guy who drove the car for many years. He bought it used with the original 283 cast iron powerglide setup and, in his words, "I drove the little 283 until it smoked so bad that it embarrassed me!" The original 283 and cast iron Powerglide come with the car, but they both sat outside for a long time and may not be any good. He then parked the car and began an amateur restoration, filling rusty spots with bondo, sanding it out and shooting it red (the car is originally a silvery blue color). He replaced the drive train with a later model GM crate 350 SBC (in good used condition) and a TH350. He drove the car another number of years with this combo until the midwest winters started to get the best of his amateur bodywork and he parked it again with hopes of restoring the car someday. He said the car ran and shifted fine when parked and I believe him. The car does have rust, it has lived it's life in the midwest and that is typical in these parts. I have been under the car, and although it's rusty, the frame appears to be in pretty good shape. The floors were patched during the first repaint and they work but should be redone. I have tried to take as many photos under the car so as to not hide the condition whatsoever. The dash is complete, but the padded dash has cracks. The gauges are all there and they are said to have all been working when the car was parked. The glass is all there and in good shape, no cracks, and the side windows roll up and down although they are stiff. I think it has the original bench seat. The quarters aren't as rusty as they look in the photos. From the trim line on down about 6 inches they are actually pretty solid. Most of the rust is down low. I guess it would depend on how far a guy wanted to go in a restoration whether you would patch them or replace with full quarters. It would make a KILLER rat rod with a lot less effort. I would put a new gas tank in it and make sure the fuel line was new or clean before firing the engine. The engine is free with good compression and the carb is all free but a little stiff. The car has power steering and it's all there and still hooked up. It also had power brakes, but the booster was leaking and previous owner just removed the booster and put on a manual master cylinder to get it back on the road. At any rate, the car is obviously very rare but it will need a motivated buyer, with fewer years and/or more energy than I have right now. I am not trying to make any money on the deal. I would also consider interesting trades, vintage cars, pickups, motorcycles, dirt bikes, etc. I like all things with engines. I can store the car in my shop for a few weeks after the auction as long as it is paid for in full. I can also help load on to a transporter. Thanks for looking.
