Vehicle Detail
1993 Ford ½ Ton Pickup Work Truck. 8-foot Box. 4.9L L6 Engine. 4-speed overdive automatic transmission. Dual gas tanks. Radio. This truck belonged to my late friend Sam. It took almost 5 years of prodding before his 2 sons relented and sold it to me on 3/30/2002 with 76,342 miles. Have kept diligent records of all maintenance & repairs since then, including engine oil & filter changes with Wolf’s Head or NAPA 10w-30 every 3,000 miles. I did most of the general maintenance on it. Never crashed. Now has 188,000 miles on it. Engine starts right up. Leaks a small amount of oil, but does not use any. Mechanically I have kept it up quite well. Major problems with it are basically three. 1) Transmission is pretty weak. It started slamming when shifting gears. A friend told about some sort of product from the Auto Parts Store which might help. I used a suction pump to withdraw a quart of trans fluid and replaced it with the fixit product, the name of which I cannot recall at the moment. Over a few months time the shifting has improved some but obviously it’s just a matter of time. 2) Rust - driver’s side floor pan & rocker panel are pretty much eaten away. Fred Flintstone would have no trouble driving it. 3) Speedometer broken. When the left side rocker panel let go, there were some electrical wires in there that got taken out. I’m quite sure that the solution to the speedo problem is in that small bundle of wires. I don’t have the time nor the expertise to mess with the tranny, but I believe someone with the tools & knowledge could keep the truck going as a decent secondhand beater. Cooper tires have quite a bit of tread on them. Shocks, brakes, ball joints & steering gear are all in good shape. Recent front end alignment and it goes down the road pretty straight. It’s an easy truck to drive. It’s been with me so long it’s like losing an old friend. Haven’t used it much since the transmission started acting up, but I do drive it occasionally because it’s not good for a vehicle to sit for long periods of time. Last thing to go was the air pump bearings froze up. Installed a new serpentine belt to bypass it. Also installed a new idle air control same time. It can be driven on the road, but I’m not sure it could be trusted to travel a long distance, or if so, don’t push it too hard.
